Sleeping Tablets from Boots

SeaGrassMirror · 13/07/2022 19:42

Hi,
Having struggled to sleep some nights and moaned on and off for years about this… I spoke to a pharmacist at Boots and bought some of the attached tablets. She told me they are for very occasional use etc..
Some nights I go to bed fine but other nights I am awake still at 3:30. And having 3 children and a job I don’t need to be feeling shattered.

has anyone else taken these? Feel a cross between excited and bit nervous I guess. If I struggle tonight for longer than an hour I will take one. . Hope they work.

I used to use similar supermarket brands once a week and I looked forward to them. They do work.

ChinBristles · 13/07/2022 21:05

Last year, I had a period where I was able to sleep for about 2 hours then awake. So I'd take them when I woke up, about midnight. I'd get another couple of hours sleep. But yes, felt hungover.

I've bought some melatonin online and have it in the cupboard in case it happens again.

Phenergen, sominex, promethazine and night nurse (the sedating component) are all the same thing. It’s mad that a quarter works for some people. 😂 I’d need at least the full whack to get anywhere (on prescription doctors up it further than the recommended dose on the box).

Nytol (what you have there) does nothing for me but works great for my mother. We’re both insomniacs.

Doxylamine succinate (Kirkland sleep aid from Biovea) are better than both. It’s routinely sold in the US and around Europe but not here. 2 nights ago even one of these couldn’t get me back to sleep in the heat though.

DISCLAIMER: I’m a proper insomniac. Ambien doesn’t even work on me. Zopiclone does though. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Same here
I use Kirkland sleep aid. Sometimes even zopiclone doesn't work and I'm wishing for someone to whack me over the head!

I have had terrible insomnia for months now. Sometimes I don't get to sleep till 5am.
I've tried so many things and nothing has worked for me to get a proper nights sleep.
Will try a couple of the suggestions on here with hope in my heart.

God, I feel your pain. Gone are the days when 3.75mg of zopi could knock me out. Sometimes 7.5mg doesn’t even do much. It’s like roulette. 😬

No idea why Ambien doesn’t work for me since it’s also a nonbenzo z-drug. It’s devastating as there is a shedload in the cupboard that were prescribed in South America. 😔

PeloAddict · 13/07/2022 21:16

@AbsoluteShambles getting zopiclone now is like trying to get blood out a stone
They gave me 3 recently and I was "my mum died and I get 3? What do you need for a weeks worth, a double bereavement?" Confused

mattcockhand · 13/07/2022 21:24

I love these boots ones best out of all the over the counter ones cos they ar3 easy to bite just a bit out of....1 tablet lasts me about 3 or 4 nights. A whole tbalet makes me feel really groggy& sixk the next day.

AbsoluteShambles · 13/07/2022 21:30

@PeloAddict 😔 Sorry to hear that. That’s outrageous! They don’t understand how hard normal life is with no sleep, never mind real struggles.

I’ve gotten them easier as I have a sleep specialist, neurologist man but my GP doesn’t even like to give me them at his instruction. It’s crazy.

WorriedMillie · 13/07/2022 21:35

I use these, but the 50mg ones, 25mg doesn’t do it for me. But I’m fairly resistant to most drugs that are meant to be sedating….

whenwillthemadnessend · 13/07/2022 21:35

Watching as my dh suffers at times

SeaGrassMirror · 13/07/2022 22:03

@SouthOfFrance I’ll report back 🥱🥱

Fingers crossed

really appreciate all the input

I was addicted to these for about 3 years in my early 20s. Worked very well but in reality I abused them, used it to block out a whole swathe of life so was struggling to deal with. Horrific side effects when tried to wean off it - projectile vomiting etc. Please stick to the occasional use recommendation

Imightbe · 13/07/2022 22:12

I have used antihistamine tablets and they definitely leave me feeling tired and washed out!! I occasionally take Zopiclone prescribed by GP and definitely sleep better and feel more awake in the morning.

bloodywhitecat · 13/07/2022 22:13

Thank you for this OP, I haven't slept properly for four months most nights I am lucky to get four, unbroken, hours. I am going to try some of the things on here that I haven't already tried.

SeaGrassMirror · 13/07/2022 22:24

Took 1 25mg at 10:05pm. Don’t think I feel anything yet! Dh is downstairs. He said he would listen out for a thud (me falling asleep while brushing my teeth ) 😂

Never knew these existed. Please report back esp if you feel groggy in the morning. My dd suffers really badly with her sleep.

ALongHardWinter · 13/07/2022 22:29

I'm baffled by the post regarding Tesco selling sleep aid tablets! Up until about 3 years ago,I'd bought them a few times, but when I last asked about 2.5 years ago,I was told that they'd discontinued them!

SeaGrassMirror · 13/07/2022 22:31

Reporting back -
it says on packet to take 20 mins before bed. I took 1 almost half hour ago and don’t feel drowsy so have just taken another. (The dosage is 2 tablets so don’t panic)

Valerian root, can buy cheaply as a powder or ground root on ebay, works but tastes like cheesy socks, cbd will work for roughly 80% of users. If you have access to some, 1.25mg of diazepam, almost micro dosing, works better than a full 5mg tablet. I have hyperarousal insomnia, so the supermarket herbal pills, don't really help. A high quality hop oil can help, but it's all a bit hit and miss.

AbsoluteShambles · 13/07/2022 22:58

Adding the herbal recommendations, magnolia bark was recommended to me on here when I was at my wits end. Only took 1 as I got some zopiclone but apparently it’s ‘nature’s Valium’.

I should find them…

MorrisZapp · 13/07/2022 23:34

Where the heck are people getting cupboards full of ambien, zopiclone and temazepam? My doc gives me 7 half dose zops to shut me up but I'd love to have enough to keep a stock, and I'd love to try ambien. Is it licensed in the UK?

MissMogwai · 14/07/2022 06:50

I usually use Pheneghan nighttime but had to get Tesco sleep aid this week as I couldn't get them anywhere.

Pheneghan Nighttime are the only ones that work well for me, as in I sleep all night. I've tried every brand over the years and few have had made any difference.

The Tesco Sleep Aid aren't too bad, still woke up a couple of times but went back to sleep. So worth a try.

SeaGrassMirror · 14/07/2022 08:28

I took 25mg then half hour later another 25mg tablet.

i wouldn’t say it knocked me out! I think I almost sabotaged it as I was kind of waiting to feel drowsy.. next time I will just take the full dose straight away. I did stay asleep all night (apart from when toddler woke) and I did feel like i had a solid night rather than tossing and turning. And I feel awake and normal today!

If you are roughly premenopausal menopausal lack of oestrogen can sometimes be the issue with insomnia. HRT sorted out my sleep.

Allthegoodnamestakken · 14/07/2022 09:28

I use these as an antihistamine (only one that works for me) and they aren't like a prescription strength sleeping tablet in that they knock you out and leaving you feeling groggy. Just help you get a bit drowsy and drift off so you shouldn't be feeling it the next morning unless you are very sensitive to the ingredient. I do find they work if I am struggling to sleep although I have to take 100mg as I have built up a tolerance to the ingredient over the last couple of years of taking 25mg almost daily.
