How much would you expect a new front door to be?

I’ve just had a very reasonable quote for new double glazing, but am reeling at the accompanying cost for a new front door.

Its a bog-standard UPVC front door with a “side light” (fixed window next to the door).

How much would you expect, including fitting?

My daughters composite door (just one of those little windows, so cottagey style) was £1200 about 18 months ago

cansu · 11/07/2022 22:18

3,250 is ridiculous. You can get a nice composite door for around 1200. I have a lovely solidor which cost me 1200 fitted. Shop around. I was also given silly quotes like yours.

greenbirdsong · 11/07/2022 22:22

I've just been quoted 2700 for a new composite front door and side window for my porch.

I think composite doors are pretty much the norm/standard now for replacements.
Cost between 1000-3000 depending on the spec in my research.

So your door in the pic, that big handle will cost more, that grey colour might be a 'premium' colour and cost more etc.

If you want a bog standard upvc door I think they're about 500-800 when I was looking, depending on spec of course.

I dont really like any of the solidor designs but I sporadically do quotes to see if I can get myself to change my mind as Ive really struggled to work out how to get a wooden one,,, my quotes came in around the same as OPs (has a side light too). Thats over a range of companies

TuftyMarmoset · 11/07/2022 22:24

We bought a composite door, no sidelight for iirc £1600 fitted last year so I would have guessed around £2000. We are in the SE and used a local company. It is a lot better than the crappy solid wood door we had before to be fair.

user143677433 · 11/07/2022 22:25

It’s so odd, because the rest of the quote is good. I think I will need to go with the windows from them and the door from somewhere else. The challenge will be that the door frame and sidelight will presumably need to match the new windows, which are dark grey.

And thank you @MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay you really made me laugh! (And have definitely put me off that door).

Partner has a window/door business. The cost of doors (which there is hardly any profit in either) has skyrocketed, to the point he feels embarrassed to give quotes. The difference between now and pre covid is just incredible

Grissini50 · 11/07/2022 22:26

We paid £2k for a composite door + fitting earlier this year. We are in the SE. That was the cheapest of three quotes.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 11/07/2022 22:27

@bellac11 I would just measure the opening ie the gap between the bricks and request a quote for door and frame.

Seriously79 · 11/07/2022 22:28

Ours was just fitted last month, it was £2,500

DeePlume · 11/07/2022 22:29

At least a grand and that would be something quite basic

Ah that’s interesting and helpful to know. Thanks 😊

You sound in same situation as us @bellac11. Also a horrid pvc door and resigned to Solidor as the quotes for wooden doors are just so ludicrous. If we still had the original wooden door, I might convince myself that it could only be wood. But as the composite will still be an improvement on what we have, we've talked ourselves into accepting it. The Stirling is not too bad. But the local supplier is useless at getting in touch so have let it for a while.

PedalPedal · 11/07/2022 22:35

We paid 1800 for a composite door and frame all inc

Yes Sterling is the only one that looks vaguely right, but the issue comes when I try to put the side light on, because I would want a different door frame to the side light frame, plus I dont like any of the handles etc.

Ideally I want a round window. Plus the proper knobs and letterbox etc. Plus I dont want a door that shuts itself, I want to have to close it and lock it

Lovinglife45 · 11/07/2022 22:46

Wow - quotes of between £2k and £5k for a front door! We may be hanging onto ours for a while years yet.

The grey composite doors are popular on new builds - did not think think they were so expensive.

I have noticed a number of residents in my area having their drives paved and extensions installed. They look lovely.

spongedog · 11/07/2022 22:48

Sorry I havent read all the thread. But I love my front door. it is steel lined and I like the style and I did love my ASSA lock. After 25 years the door furniture is looking tarnished - well tarnished. Very difficult to replace so my only option looks to be stripping and re-lacquering. The quote for letter box, handle, eye hole, key hole etc - well over £400+. So a new door - always likely to be much more. It is crazy!

SkankingWombat · 11/07/2022 23:41

We had a new composite front door fitted 18 months ago and it cost £650 all in. BUT that was because a friend fitted it at mates rates plus, as we weren't particularly fussy over the design and colour, he got us a mismeasure. Our friend told me if we'd chosen it from the brochure and paid normal labour rates, it would have been ~£1200. In the intervening months the cost of building materials have sky-rocketed, so I can well believe your quote could be fairly standard at today's prices OP.

Oh yes, mine is steel lined too. And RAM PROOF.

Steel lined
Ram proof
Dark grey
Tiny windows
Locks itself
Massive bar for a handle

PRISON!
