How much would you expect a new front door to be?

I’ve just had a very reasonable quote for new double glazing, but am reeling at the accompanying cost for a new front door.

Its a bog-standard UPVC front door with a “side light” (fixed window next to the door).

How much would you expect, including fitting?

I have just paid £3300 for a composite front door and 2 new upvc windows. I think the door including fitting was £2000 but can't remember the exact split.

user143677433 · 11/07/2022 21:37

By comparison, the rest of the quote for 15 windows (including one huge 9 square meter one) is £8,000

@FuckingHateRats would you be willing to share the name of the company you ordered from please? It's absolutely lovely!

OK yes, it’s composite. Like this one.

£3,250!!!

We paid £1600 for similar but plain glass and normal handle. The handle you chose can add quite a bit to the cost so you could go with a more standard one if wanted to save.

FuckingHateRats · 11/07/2022 21:50

It was this company: www.charlesjoinerydesign.com/3-curved-and-raised-wooden-panel/

A quick warning - the primer they used was water-based and peeled. We had to strip it back and re-prime and paint. However they refunded us the amount this cost us. I'd request it unprimed, if I was to order again.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 11/07/2022 21:50

What a beautiful door Rats.

I've got a similar door to the one you have pictured OP and I absolutely hate it. I honestly feel like I'm coming home to a prison every night. It's the most depressing door ever.

Someone else on my street has a beautiful bright yellow door with a heart shaped window. And I have a grey prison door with tiny windows. I'm so jealous.

PaperDoves · 11/07/2022 21:51

@FuckingHateRats yes, please share!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 11/07/2022 21:52

We have just accepted a quote for a solidor. £2150. Posh glass etc including fitting.

TokyoTen · 11/07/2022 21:52

£1,500

ivykaty44 · 11/07/2022 21:53

I got a notification ve wooden modern look front door, it was around £500 with varnishing

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 11/07/2022 21:53

And I had to take the prison bar handle off and buy another million pounds one.

And it locked itself so we had to get the innards taken out because it just added to the prison vibe.

User952539 · 11/07/2022 21:54

That’s not a crazy price, front doors are expensive at the best of times and there’s a massive supply issue with doors at the moment

FuckingHateRats · 11/07/2022 21:30

We bought a new door last year.

It's solid wood. We designed the stained glass ourselves. It was about £1,100 delivered, then we paid another £300 to have it fitted and painted.

This is EXACTLY the door I have been looking for, can only see companies that will do it for about 5k

Where is this form, also do they do south east England?

ineedafairygodmother · 11/07/2022 21:59

OP where abouts are you? If you are in NE and you have measurements (or approx ones) go onto www.iwantadoor.com and www.iwantawindow.com to get ball park figures. I don't know what the company is like (good or bad) but it will give you a idea of pricing or at least help to know if your being completely ripped off

SwedishEdith · 11/07/2022 22:00

Thank you @FuckingHateRats

I wish we could just get a door and not have to get the bloody side lights and surround as well as, I think, it's that that really adds to the cost.

Website doesnt seem to be working or might have crashed with loads of people looking at it.

However, can I ask how you managed the measuring and what sort of frame you had, we currently have a (broken) UPVC door which must have been here for about 100 years, horrible thing, some of the frame is broken, did they remove the frame and do you need to have a high threshold as I dont want a threshold.

(yes I know upvc wasnt round 100 years ago)

BlackandJello · 11/07/2022 22:01

We are having a composite door fitted next month for about £1100.

FuckingHateRats · 11/07/2022 22:04

The company were really good. We supplied an image of our local beach and they worked really hard to get the design right, going through several permutations before we were happy.

I've posted a link to them above.

We used the existing frame. We live in a 1930s house and wanted to keep it as original as possible. The doorknob is the original 1930s one, and this window style is what the original door would have had.

bellac11 · 11/07/2022 22:07

Thanks the website constantly comes up with errors

I think this company was one I looked into some time ago (I go through phases of trying to get this sorted but then it becomes too difficult) and one of the things that stopped me is the measuring, I have no idea how to do this, because the frame that is there now, isnt going to be the frame of any new door, and I got confused about how to do that?

Ah you were lucky, we have a late 20s house but its a upvc frame. Not sure what I do with this. Weve been here over 10 years now and I HATE the front door, cant tell you how much. We got the windows done so they look a lot more original to how they would have looked when built but the door I just cant seem to solve.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 11/07/2022 22:09

The stained glass is beautiful!

SNAFU247 · 11/07/2022 22:11

Had one recently, had to haggle and got it for £2,400. That includes a side panel of glazing too though.

SNAFU247 · 11/07/2022 22:12

Ours is composite and slam shut too.

There's a nice row of 7 newish houses built near me 5 years all - the developer had fitted them all with 'obligatory grey' front doors, complete with the vertical stainless steel bar for that true office vibe.

Walked passed on the weekend, and all but one have changed it!
Now a lovely collection of red, yellow, pale blue, green, black and navy blue. All with different glass styles.

I thought it looked great!
