How are you keeping bedrooms cool in this heat?

The sun shines in the bedroom from two angles from lunchtime till sunset. The walls are warm to the touch where sun has heated the whole room. This is with curtains and blinds closed, but because the walls are being heated, it’s like a furnace.

open windows about 8pm ish but the room stays too warm until around 1am.

is an air con unit the only option or is there an alternative?

@WestIsWest

Do you move it from room to room to cool each one?

We've just got one but it seems like such a faff to drag it around and seal into windows etc. But if we don't then we seem to be trying (unsuccessfully) to cool the whole house!

Mine is made by Inventor for those who’ve asked it’s 8000btu, but I wish I’d got 12000btu now.
I don’t move it about, my house is small, so I just leave it in the bathroom with it vented out of the window and leave the bathroom door open and bedroom doors open. I cool the kids rooms before they go to bed, then open my bedroom door and leave their open a bit.
What helped was putting the air con on a table so the vent pipe is straight. The longer the pipe is and the more bent it is the harder it is for them to work apparently. Also although I clean the filters often, when I set it up this Summer I opened the back and it was full of dust, it works a lot better than last Summer now because I cleaned all the dust off.
I also use a fan in my room to move the air so it circulates the cold in a bit better. I leave it on until 2/3am. Then then it back on early afternoon. I also have thick foil backed insulation on the windows in my DS’s room. His is the worst room for getting hot. I also have blinds in all the bedrooms that help a bit, they’re sort of double walled so they block quite a bit of the heat as well.

Please recommend your air con units. My bank card is literally poised and ready. Do you have to vent them out of the window?

Mine is vented out of the window with a piece of wood blocking it off round the vent. Otherwise the hot air just comes back in the gaps. Then it doesn’t work as well and costs a load more to run.

I’ve also got a curtain at the top of the stairs that blocks the staircase and landing off, so the cold air isn’t falling down to the sitting room as much.

Is that safe? Wont it magnify the suns ray?

Safe in what way? It just reflects the sun away from the windows.

@OperaStation I know, you would think not, but I have no garden, and the only space I have to dry things is on the airer which has to go in our kitchen/living area, that is all we have. Where do you dry your washing in this weather then? Bedding/towels/soon to have uniforms, other clothing.

I live in a flat and dry everything on a normal clothes horse. Sheets and towels get hung over doors. They dry in about an hour when it’s this hot. I only use the tumble dryer in the middle of winter if I have a lot of washing and then only for sheets.

We have an air con unit, but We usually blast both the air con and fan for 15 minuteS before bed and then just leave the fan on, Luckily our bedroom is at such an angle the sun never blares in. Cools it right down

Sleeping on the floor in the lounge. Even the sofa is too warm.

But we've just come back from camping, so it seems logical to keep it going rather than go to our south facing furnace upstairs.

Having a pre English Civil War home helps - thick stone walls.

After nights of not sleeping we have moved into the spare room. As said in a previous post by someone our bedroom is south facing so gets sun on it all morning and moves round and still gets sun in afternoon. The bricks acts like storage heaters and it makes the room blooming hot. Spare room on others side of house is much cooler. What tog duvet is every using. I am even debating using a sheet?!?!?

Kimwexlerr · 13/07/2022 22:52

Our loft bedroom is infernal. I used to shut all windows and close curtains as per the instructions everywhere. Now I shut curtains but leave windows open and it’s a bit better.

3 x £19.99 fans from screwfix. Also keeping bedroom curtains shut and only opening windows in evening once it’s started to cool down a bit. Want to fit ceiling fans in the bedrooms at some point.
