How are you keeping bedrooms cool in this heat?

The sun shines in the bedroom from two angles from lunchtime till sunset. The walls are warm to the touch where sun has heated the whole room. This is with curtains and blinds closed, but because the walls are being heated, it’s like a furnace.

open windows about 8pm ish but the room stays too warm until around 1am.

is an air con unit the only option or is there an alternative?

I keep all windows closed and blinds down all day, only when the sun goes down I open windows
But today I think this was a mistake as I opened windows it got hotter! So won't be doing that tomorrow!

Spray or moisten the widow pane and attach tin foil. It will reflect the sun and cut down on the solar gain in bedrooms.

Is that safe? Wont it magnify the suns ray?

jenny5000 · 11/07/2022 22:58

OP: my portable ac is a DeLonghi, bought c 3 years ago. As I only use it a few days a year, I stick it out the window and pad with towels. It's brilliant.

I find that living in the west of Northern Ireland works a treat for this problem. It has been overcast for a fortnight (before that it was overcast and pissing rain every day) and currently 10-15 deg cooler than the south of England.

On the rare occasions that the mercury climbs above about 25deg and we're all sweltering , trying to get a through draught does help a bit

This made me chuckle!!

LaWench · 11/07/2022 23:16

We have thermal blackout curtains which are a blessing in this heat, usually keep them closed wth the window open for breeze and fan on.

whattodo2019 · 11/07/2022 23:23

We have blinds in all the upstairs windows, so they are pulled down. Windows open. Attic door open. Fans on in all bedrooms

sleeplessbunny · 11/07/2022 23:23

When it's really hot I hose the walls of the house in the evening. As the water evaporates it cools the walls. I have also been known to blutack silver foil to the windows. I'm in the SW and it hasn't got quite that bad this time round (yet...)

RedCardigan · 11/07/2022 23:26

Portable aircon and small cheap digital temp displays so you can see when the indoor/outdoor temp changes to open and shut windows. But aircon. Game changer. See people posting about paying 3 nights in a hotel for the aircon, when for the same price you can buy one!

BLACK+DECKER BXAC40008GB 12,000 BTU Portable 3-in-1 Air Conditioner, Dehumidifier, Cooling Fan, LED Display, 3 Fan Speed, 24 Hour Timer, Remote Control, White amzn.eu/j4065oO

We have this unit. It's very effective but not easy to move from room to room.

Yes 😂
Scotland is equally as pleasant… what is this sun everyone speaks of?

wingliner · 11/07/2022 23:33

We have a south facing garden which means our 2 back bedrooms, one of which is ours is also baking. Sun is constantly on the back of house and then moves round to side of house. We have blond half down during day with windows open. Then as day goes on pull blinds up.
We allow airflow through top of house. I’m normally a door shut on every room kind of person but in summer they are all left open.
We do sometimes leave loft hatch open, sort of works.
We have a portable air com unit but it’s quite noisy at night.
Def going to try the ice cold water bottle, although ice cold shower before also works.

BrownHairedQuirk · 11/07/2022 23:35

Does anyone have an aircon that doesn’t need venting that actually works? We have indoor cats so have the windows open to vent and our loft room is baking!

Bunnyfuller · 11/07/2022 23:35

I’m currently laying on a sunlounger on the patio. I’m slowly cooling down

wheresmymojo · 11/07/2022 23:36

I'm sleeping on the sofa with the patio door open, it's bliss!

We gave in and got a portable air con unit for our bedroom last year. Although it’s not used very often (this is the U.K after all!), we have no regrets when we do need it.

Where from and how much roughly? Thanks.

mm40 · 11/07/2022 23:39

Our dogs are fighting over the cold tiled floor in a bathroom and squeezing between the toilet bowl and the wall to keep their bellies and their backs cool. In the winter they do the same as it’s got underfloor heating

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 11/07/2022 23:40

Solar blackout thermal curtains or curtain liners from Dunelm. Cheap as chips, great for summer and winter and don't increase your energy bill!

wingliner · 11/07/2022 23:42

I have massively considered sleeping outside after hearing it on the radio this morning …. So I honestly sleep all night outside?

My dad slept outside for a week in the 70s when it was really hot
He said he had enough and stomped out to the garden and stayed there Grin

wingliner · 11/07/2022 23:47

@PeloAddict really wow - just not sure how I feel about sleeping outside all night. I think I would feel quite vulnerable!?!?

Yeah 1976 he just told me! I think it's different being female sadly and they lived in a quiet area. He said a lot of people were sleeping on balconies or outside as it was so hot

SeriousAlligator · 11/07/2022 23:48

Hot water bottle filled with cold water and put in the freezer. Don't use it for hot water again afterwards though.

Why? (I am assuming something to do with physics). I do this with my hot water bottle all the time and then have used it for hot water after. Nothing seems to have gone wrong yet

itsthesoundofthepolice · 11/07/2022 23:48

Windows & blinds closed on the sunny side blinds closed and windows open on the shaded side with all internal doors open through the day.

Now it's dark I've opened the sunny side windows to create a through draught. I'm sleeping with just the duvet cover, cool shower before bed and a bottle of water for through the night. My room has dropped down to 22 degrees but the breeze is cool so it will hopefully drop some more.

I have a fan with an block that goes in the freezer but I can't find it for the life of me

wingliner · 11/07/2022 23:52

@itsthesoundofthepolice I am going to try blinds down and windows shut on the sunny side tomorrow and only open windows on the shaded side - see if it makes a a difference

If you have lots the blocks you can always chick a bag of ice in - it works the same.

Have you tried the loft hatch trick?

itsthesoundofthepolice · 11/07/2022 23:56

@wingliner I've lost it all except the box and the plug 🤣 I've obviously left it to dry out then ex husband has tidied it away somewhere "safe"

I've not tried the loft hatch, mine is really awkward to unlatch but I'll give it a shot tomorrow night
