Making the males uncomfortable

Dd has sports day tomorrow. They have to come in pe kit and have been told if they want to wear their pe skort they have to wear their school skirt over the top in lessons as it makes the male teachers feel uncomfortable. I massively dont agree with dd being told this and want to raise it as an issue with school bit not exactly sure how to ho about it. Any advice??

That's crazy. If it had even been "regular school uniform in the classroom, change into PE kit for games", that would at least be neutral. Even saying uniforms in the classroom is the rule in order to keep the more academic atmosphere, show respect to each other and all the teachers, etc. (Respect meaning wearing the more formal, trad clothing rather than casual/athletic, not specifically being covered up.) But the message is wear the kit but cover it up? And specifically because of the male teachers?

Some possible criticims:

  1. Victim blaming (of the girls)

  2. Causes the girls to give up comfort/efficiency due to something beyond their control

  3. Puts the female body in a negative light when surely part of the point of games day is to use the body and view it positively.

  4. Puts the male teachers (and males in general) in a negative light and erodes trust.

If the school prides itself on being feminist, this by Laura Bates may strike a note or give you some ideas on what to ask/say.

I would be horrified too. Young females should not have to censor themselves because older men get uncomfortable or cannot control themselves. Also, perhaps the school needs a more appropriate pe kit then. Why can't all sexes wear the same?

If you meant the male students being uncomfortable, well that is on them. It is not a female responsibility to cover themselves because males are uncomfortable.

I would be raging.

I hate all this - like mufti days where the girls have to make sure their shoulders are covered. What is do alluring about a shoulder?

"Dear school
Please can you let me know which of DDs male teachers feel 'uncomfortable' seeing the students in their school issued sports kit so I can report to safeguarding lead/police... "

This is perfect.
