What regional cakes and other baked goods exist in your area?

I love how much variation there is with accents in the U.K so now I'm curious to know what cakes and other delights there are.

Eccles Cakes and Chorley Cakes (Chorley Lancashire)

This was my mums favourite! Four hour drive for a cake is a bit much though!

One of mine too…wrong side of Pennines now to find it

Border Tart - it's a pastry base with a combination of nuts and dried fruit in a layer with white icing on top. There are even town variations such as Eyemouth tart.

Selkirk bannock - a little bit like teacake but slightly stickier and delicious toasted with jam. Not a million miles away from bara brith.

Both are worth a try if you're visiting the Scottish Borders or north Northumberland.

Never seen this in a shop but my mum and a few others made their own mint pasties. Sweet short crust pastry cut into a round, scattered with currants and fresh mint torn into approximately 1cm pieces, fold in half to make a flat pasty shape score on the top and generously sprinkle granulated sugar in top and then bake. I think I might make nine tomorrow thinking about it.

Scotrish Strawberry tarts 😋

Silverfinch · 11/07/2022 21:10

From Cornwall: Pisky tart, similar to Bakewell tart but with a layer of marmalade rather than jam. Delicious.

My MIL used to work in a bakery that sols Russian Slice. Absolutely divine but never seen it for sale in any local bakeries. Does anyone know anywhere where it is sold?

Silverfinch · 11/07/2022 21:13

Moscow

Eccles cakes - buttery deliciousness. Parkin is fab too. Staffordshire and Derbyshire oatcakes are very similar and best homemade or from a hole in the wall shop, but they're widely available in supermarkets. They're made from a yeast leavened batter with oatmeal in it. I swear I first saw yum yums in a bakery in the Barrio Gothic in Barcelona about 25 years ago!

I can't think of any cakes specific to NI but we definitely have all the breads covered Grin

keziahmee · 11/07/2022 21:24

Cattern cakes - see www.thesimplethings.com/blog/cattern-cakes - from Northamptonshire/Beds/Bucks

I would kill for a slice of Manchester tart - haven’t had it for years.

Isabelle70 · 11/07/2022 21:27

We have Guernsey Gâche, a fruit loaf that is sliced and buttered with Guernsey butter. I don’t like it but do like the Guernsey butter 😀

aprofoundhistoricaloddity · 11/07/2022 22:27

Shropshire butter buns. Yum yum yum

Davros · 11/07/2022 22:56

Chelsea buns.
Stressal which is an anglicised version of Streusal. Pastry case, apple, possibly custard and then lovely crumbly stuff. I used to buy them in Sherrards in Aldwych around 1985

It was only in recent years that I discovered that Chocolate Concrete is only served in the Midlands.
You poor, deprived people from elsewhere. An absolute staple of school dinners for decades here, and I never realised others hadn't grown up with it too.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 11/07/2022 23:06

No way!!!! @Evenstar
You've just made my day!
Thank you.

Needmorelego · 11/07/2022 23:07

@Kite22 chocolate concrete !! Need more details please...😂
The tuck shop at my secondary school used to sell something I think was called a chocolate cracknell. A bit like a rice crispy cake but much much more solid. They were the size and shape of half a cricket ball. So solid that 2 stuck together probably could have been used as an actual cricket ball.

TrailOfAbandonedPlanners · 11/07/2022 23:10

My mum makes non-clootie dumplings. Just dumpling mix steamed in a pudding basin. She objects to the skin on a clootie dumpling.

Most things that are now everywhere (see yum yums) were often originally regional. It’s just that big chains and supermarkets picked them up and made them more widely available because there’s a wider market for them.

And the tray bakes. You’ve got them down

TrailOfAbandonedPlanners · 11/07/2022 23:12

Fifteens are pretty quintessentially northern Irish. 😁

Mabelshouse · 11/07/2022 23:15

Singing Hinnies from the north east. Also drop scones from the Scottish Borders.
