What regional cakes and other baked goods exist in your area?

I love how much variation there is with accents in the U.K so now I'm curious to know what cakes and other delights there are.

Not UK but we have Naniamo bars. So sweet but so good with coffee

CaramelJones · 11/07/2022 17:33

How on earth do people survive without pakora?!

I would add Parkin to these from Lancashire. I love it!

Eccles cake yum yum especially if home made 😋 😜

Wash your mouth out @PurpleDaisies 😃
Mr Kipling makes exceedingly sickly cakes. Proper Bakewell pudding is delicious.

I always thought that parkin was traditionally from Yorkshire. I haven't seen curd tarts in ages. When I worked in Leeds I used to buy them in Ainsley's. I have never seen Empire biscuits.

Summerhillsquare · 11/07/2022 17:43

Russian cake, sly cake, stottie cakes 😁

Yorkshire curd tart. With raisins. Heaven. Days worth of food in a single serving.

I don't even live in Yorkshire but an adjoining county.

This was my mums favourite! Four hour drive for a cake is a bit much though!

Saffron buns, hevva (heavy) cake, congress tarts...

And milk splits! Ok, technically bread, but still.

The best dessert I've ever made was bread and butter pudding made with saffron loaf. Bleddy ansum!

SaintHelena · 11/07/2022 17:49

Ecclefechan Tart - a rich dried fruit tart.

My favourite growing up was 'London cheesecake' - pastry square with jam and sugary coconut strands on top. Not seem them since moving north 20 yrs ago :(

They do it in Lidl -have you looked in there ?

Mushroomlady · 11/07/2022 17:52

Not near me but Banbury cakes. They're like Eccles cakes.

cherrypiepie · 11/07/2022 17:54

@Sniffypete you can you get them mail order from Betty's? You can fat rascals but think they might be less perishable than the tarts!

Mrsjayy · 11/07/2022 18:00

Probably a snowball. Its round cake covered in coconut. I'm in Central Scotland.

Something else.
For a number of years we'd regularly stay in Staffordshire.
The inn that we stayed in would always serve Staffordshire Oat Cakes for breakfast with a voice of fillings eg cheese and bacon.
They're not like the Scottish hard biscuits, they're a whole meal pancake that gets folded over your filling.

Absolutely delicious and difficult to buy in shops due to how they're made.

I don't know if it's still the case but Sainsbury's used to stock these (in the north west)
I agree they are excellent!

Yodaisawally · 11/07/2022 18:07

Yum yums are everywhere here - all supermarkets and Greggs. London.

I thought Larry cake was Welsh?

DH loves Tottenham Cake which still turns up in traditional bakeries, Gypsy Tart and London cheesecake.

Evenstar · 11/07/2022 18:07

@WishILivedInThrushGreen I have family in Staffordshire and one owns an oatcake shop and does mail order www.staffordshireoatcakes.com/index.php

Needmorelego · 11/07/2022 18:11

@Mushroomlady I was about to say Banbury Cakes as that's my part of the world. They are very nice.
There apparently used to be a Banbury Cheese but it was terrible so was used as in insult by Shakespeare.
I used to work in a bakery and we sold massive lardy cakes. Some customers called them 'slab'. They were really a slab. Size of a brick they were 😂

Chooksnroses · 11/07/2022 18:11

Slightly different, but I remember years ago reading a very funny article about serving Victoria Sponge in different parts of Britain. I can't remember all of it, but it included, If you put it on the table uncut you're considered mean because it's assumed you don't want it eaten. If you slice it you're mean because you're deciding how big a piece people can have, and ended with it never being sliced in a certain northern city because you've only borrowed it from next door to appear posh!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/07/2022 18:12

I've bought Staffordshire oatcakes in Lancashire, quite possibly from a sainsburys.

cheapskatemum · 11/07/2022 18:21

DH is from Glasgow and introduced me to Clootie Duff. I have no idea if that's how you spell it, I've only heard it said. It's like a dried fruit steamed? pudding, served in slices.

CaramelJones · 11/07/2022 18:26

Favouritefruits Thank you. I love pineapple tarts and I haven't tried the M&S ones yet. I'll have to do that soon.

I love a snowball - I split them open and add a touch more raspberry jam and sandwich together again. Super sickly sweet but so good.

Also called a clootie (cloth) dumpling I've not had it in years because I'm now allergic to dried fruit but it's delicious.

My Nana used to have jam with hers.

Clootie McToot dumplings - I got one of these for my MIL for Burns Night and she was very happy...

Headbandheart · 11/07/2022 18:59

batley cakes- does anyone else know these? 2 layers of a sconey/shortcakey mix with layer of jam between, though I put mincemeat in mine
Fat rascals
parkin
Eccles cakes (mind they’re probably Lancashire actually and now Manchester greater thing…)
