Can't deal with this heat any more

Currently WFH, no AC, fan on, but not helping much. Drinking ice water. What are your tips for staying cool?

I wasn't able to sleep much and cannot function if it's going to be like this for the next week or even longer...

We close the blinds from. 8am to 9pm.

No doors or windows open during those hours.

I find it gets cold enough at night to stay cool in the house all day.

But we live rurally in a river valley so the cold air sinks into our village every night.

How do you usually cope when it's hot like this - which is it every year?

I've no idea why that double posted sorry!

yesitssea · 11/07/2022 14:28

Curtains closed windows open and all sides of the house.

As little clothing as possible.

Small meals.

Cold shower in morning and evening and then air dry (only thing that cools me down). I also go to bed with damp hair on really hot days.

I too hate the heat. I find it really oppressive and I'm really short tempered with everyone.

No idea. I’m feeling guilty because I’m supposed to have started moving house. (From our boat to a house, we’ve just bought, so no one else is inconvenienced)

I just cannot face moving boxes and driving 3 hours today. Part of me thinks sod it, part of me is feeling guilty as I left work purely to focus on this move and redecorate so Dh didn’t have to. But it’s one day..

BocolateChiscuits · 11/07/2022 14:29

A freeze pack thing for picnic bags at the bottom of the bed, for nice cool feet.

Cold showers in the morning. Find it helps me to sweat less during the day and it saves energy on heating.

Exercise early before it gets hot, and before the cold shower. Then I feel less guilty for avoiding physical activity the rest of the day.

"Nice cream" blitz frozen bananas with berries or cocoa powder. Freeze into ice cream.

Hiding at the back of my house, which faces north.

timtam23 · 11/07/2022 14:29

A cooling neck wrap. I have one that I bought years ago in Australia and it's fantastic on hot days. It's possible to make them yourself very cheaply if you can sew, but there are quite a few to buy online.

Close your blinds and don't open windows. As evening comes and it is slightly cooler open the windows that don't have sun on them. Let's slightly cooler air in. Keep hydrated.

Put something cold on your wrists it will cool your body down.

Order some cooling towels

Some say put ice in front of fan and it makes the air cooler. I haven't tried it though. I've also seen someone sit inside a duvet sheet and place the fan at opening and create their own air conditioned room

Rwealere · 11/07/2022 14:32

No tips just sympathy as nothing I’ve tried works. I move around the house trying to stay away as the sun moves but the rooms get very stuffy/airless without opening windows but then the noise from outside means I keep having to close them. Can’t find the right option. Dreading the bills so struggling without air conditioning.

toooldtocarewhoknows · 11/07/2022 14:32

We have windows closed with binds and curtains closed during the day.

It's cool inside and it's not a brilliantly insulated house either.

As soon as the temperature starts to drop at night we open doors and windows and open curtains.

I've trapped a blanket over the glass back doors to give shade as our kitchen and utility was heating up. That's worked too, it's now cool.

We haven't needed our fans on.

DaphneeBridgerton · 11/07/2022 14:33

run your Wrists under a cold tap - it really cools you down

if you’re wfh can you sit with your feet in a bucket of cold water?

drink lots of water

DaphneeBridgerton · 11/07/2022 14:34

And as others have said keep your windows closed! People seem to think it helps to open them but it really doesn’t.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 11/07/2022 14:38

These days I have a neck fan that I can charge off my laptop but I remember when I first started work we used to sit with our feet in cold water (washing up bowl or similar).

takeitandleaveit · 11/07/2022 14:43

Stand a large bowl of ice cubes immediately in front of your fan.

Smile
Loobyloo68 · 11/07/2022 14:47

I'm a postie, it's no fun walking 6 to 10 miles a day in this heat!! As soon as I get in its shower, bikini on and lots of cold drinks. I've always said hot weather is nice if you've got nothing to do.😁

ThatsMyJam · 11/07/2022 14:54

My tips as a heat hater. Sorry if I repeat any -

For being out and about get a water spray bottle. I got mine from Amazon.

Wear cool cotton clothes

Shut windows and curtains during the day.

Drink hot drinks. The body will regulate itself and try to cool you.

Have warm not cold showers for the same reason.

Ice in front of the fan is a life saver. I have a small plastic cup I freeze and then put in front of the fan.

Get a pet cooling mat to use as a pillow or to sit against.

This is strange but I will sometimes put on videos of snowy scenes to try to trick my mind! Not sure if it works but worth a go.

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 11/07/2022 15:12

I wet a towel with freezing cold water and put it round my neck and shoulders

mscynical · 11/07/2022 15:15

This is what I do - it works!
Large flannel or small towel is sufficient. Make sure you wear old t-shirt as well as that gets wet!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 11/07/2022 15:27

I find light weight loose trousers and tops more comfortable than dresses/skirts, having skin on skin when crossing legs/sitting down gets hot and sweaty and uncomfortable. A thin layer of fabric is much cooler.

MintyGreenDream · 11/07/2022 15:36

Get a neck fan op mine came today and its ace

caringcarer · 11/07/2022 15:43

Put your clothing to be worn next day in a bag in the fridge. Cool shower then put on really cool clothing. I put a clean pillow case in fridge every day for when I go to bed.

GoldenPineapple88 · 11/07/2022 15:55

Sit with your feet in a bucket of cold (not freezing) water. It's the best way to cool down quickly. After 10 mins you'll be a normal temperature 🙂

ThreeRingCircus · 11/07/2022 16:02

I soak a flannel with really cold water then wipe it round my neck and chest and let the water evaporate off my skin.

Also if you have young DDs andd happen to have one of those gel cold compresses for bumps that you keep in the fridge I've found they feel amazing held against the back of my neck or my forehead.

ActualMadness · 11/07/2022 16:08

All these windows, doors and curtain isn’t your house 35+ degrees and stuffy? I have all windows open as wide as the go, all outside doors open apart from front door and all bedroom doors propped open to create a cross breeze. My house is 27 degrees when I returned home from the shops earlier and it have been shut up for 60 minutes it was 38 degrees.
