Sunburn help

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/07/2022 18:57

It was overcast and breezy yesterday, however we spent the whole day outside at a country park. I've clearly not applied my suncream often enough as I am in absolute agony.

From my knees down to my ankles my legs are almost neon pink. I'm slathering the after sun on (and have been since last night), have even taken some painkillers. I've got a can of mist spray which gives a short burst of relief.

Every time I sit down then get up, the pain is so excruciating. Like the pain is down to the bone. I said to dh that childbirth was less painful than this.

Anything else I can do?

Keep drinking water, it can be very dehydrating

ilovebagpuss · 10/07/2022 19:00

Ouch! You poor thing not anything medical but could you stand to sit in a cool bath and try and take some heat out?
I found aloe vera gel very good for sun burn slathered on thick if you can get some on Amazon.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/07/2022 19:02

Yeah - I had a cool bath at 11am, will go get in another one before bed. Oh aloe Vera sounds good. I'll see if I can get some delivered.

Calamine lotion, or after sun cream

captncrunch · 10/07/2022 19:03

So much sympathy! My DH did this in Australia a few years ago and it was so painful he had 2 days off work! I second the importance of keeping yourself hydrated. Aloe is good and keeping it in the fridge even better. Hope you feel better soon x

Do you have an aloe pot plant by any chance? I use fresh aloe (cut a leaf open to get the jelly like flesh out) on burns it should help with sunburn too.

Whattodonow6322 · 10/07/2022 19:04

Try sudocream - great for sun burn

JamMakingWannaBe · 10/07/2022 19:05

It's a bit late but it might still help - get those legs in a bucket of iced water.

You need to get the heat out to stop it affecting lower layers of skin.

After that, some cream containing vitamin E or cocoa butter. Not a barrier cream like sudocreme at this stage.

If it blisters or peels, report back.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 10/07/2022 19:05

Cool/cold bath and paracetamol will help.

Antigonads · 10/07/2022 19:06

I was just rolling my eyes at all the cautionary nanny state pronouncements on the news.

But realise they are clearly needed.

Musicalmistress · 10/07/2022 19:08

Do you have shaving foam/cream with menthol in the house? Has to have menthol in but smeared over your burnt bits & legged for 10 mins. Sounds daft but it does help take some of the heat out

Honestly. Now is not the time.

Banana boat aloe vera gel really helps cool it down. Used to be able to get it in tesco.

Quitelikeit · 10/07/2022 19:10

Aloe Vera if you don’t have it I put almond oil on mine and it really helped unlike sudo creme and Norwegian formula moisturiser

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 10/07/2022 19:11

After your cold bath put a pair of leggings on and soak the area over the burn, keep it wet all night (sit/sleep on a towel). By morning youll be brown. I've used this method whenever DD and I have got burnt and works everytime.

EatsShoootsAndLeaves · 10/07/2022 19:11

Have you got oedema/swelling with your sunburn? If so, raising your ankles up might help drain it so it feels better/less tight. I had a bad sunburn on the back of my knees to my ankles a couple of years ago, so I really feel for you!

AnyFucker · 10/07/2022 19:14

Ibuprofen, drink plenty of water, elevate your legs

Don’t slather lots of various potions on as it holds in the heat. Don’t apply ice cold water, use tepid water on the area

Every summer I see similar shit advice for sunburn

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/07/2022 19:17

If I raise my legs the pain reduces but then as soon as I stand it floods back. Feels easier to stay upright.

You have my sympathy- I did this when I was 17 and 20 years later, still one of the worst pains I've ever been in. I don't want to scare you, but I actually blacked out from it when I got up the next morning. I was so embarrassed I just rode it out and it started to feel better after about a week. Nowadays I would be calling 111 for advice. I hope it gets better soon

RusholmeRuffian · 10/07/2022 19:18

Plain Greek Yoghurt, leave it in for 15 mins, rinse with cold water. Reapply as necessary.

Justwingingit2005 · 10/07/2022 19:19

I heard sudocream was good for sunburn

Notthisnotthat · 10/07/2022 19:22

Natural Yogurt left on overnight is one of the best ways to ease sunburn. That and Aloe Vera are the best things we've used.

After sun is just a moisturiser I think, doesn't actually do anything for burns.

RandomMess · 10/07/2022 19:24

Get proper burn gel.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 10/07/2022 19:30

I sympathise, it’s so painful. You said you’ve had painkillers…did you have some ibuprofen? It will help with the inflammation. I hope it eases soon.
