Sunburn help

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/07/2022 18:57

It was overcast and breezy yesterday, however we spent the whole day outside at a country park. I've clearly not applied my suncream often enough as I am in absolute agony.

From my knees down to my ankles my legs are almost neon pink. I'm slathering the after sun on (and have been since last night), have even taken some painkillers. I've got a can of mist spray which gives a short burst of relief.

Every time I sit down then get up, the pain is so excruciating. Like the pain is down to the bone. I said to dh that childbirth was less painful than this.

Anything else I can do?

Right I've sat for 5mins with a (not quite) Cold shower head aimed at both legs. Will dampen some leggings and do that at bedtime. I've ordered aloe Vera gel on Amazon to arrive by 1pm tomorrow. Got no yoghurt.

I'll take some ibuprofen shortly, Don the damp leggings and head to bed with the hope I'll feel vaguely better in the morning.

It's a bit late but it might still help - get those legs in a bucket of iced water.

You need to get the heat out to stop it affecting lower layers of skin.

After that, some cream containing vitamin E or cocoa butter. Not a barrier cream like sudocreme at this stage.

If it blisters or peels, report back.

Never use ice on a burn.

OP frequently cool showers, drink lots, pain medication and try to have an early night.

Natural Yogurt left on overnight is one of the best ways to ease sunburn. That and Aloe Vera are the best things we've used.

After sun is just a moisturiser I think, doesn't actually do anything for burns.

Completely agree with @Notthisnotthat. The only two things that have ever helped my sunburn are Aloe Vera and yoghurt.

After sun is another name for sensitive body moisturiser. It will not ease the burn.

A really thick paste of bicarb mixed with a tiny bit of water. Slather it on. Leave it on. It will pull the heat out-of any burn and should be in every kitchen.

Tootiredtosleeptonight · 10/07/2022 19:39

Oh you poor thing I can actually make myself feel your pain because I’ve been there!

Bought (clearly dodgy) sun cream on holiday in 38/40 degree heat and could barely move for the pain. Never felt anything like it.

Definitely drink loads and loads of water.
They say warm showers help.
Regular painkillers can’t hurt.
Just keep telling yourself that in a few days time it will all be over.

On a side note anyone else’s DH just not use sun cream? Mine is a complete tool in this respect.

Applesonstairs · 10/07/2022 20:04

Out at a popular resort on the coast today and loads of people scarlet red. I think the wind can be deceiving. The only time I ever burnt was on a windy sunny day.

Hope it eases tonight op, it’s bloody painful.

Notanotherwindow · 10/07/2022 20:09

Wet a tea towel and freeze it. Wrap it round your legs. Have a few on rotation.

RandomMess · 10/07/2022 20:11

Honestly get the special burn gel as well, start off with that then move onto Aloe Vera

chillinwithmygnomies · 10/07/2022 20:27

Oh op I feel your pain, I burnt my legs and arms one year and have never felt pain like it, was aching down to my bones, struggled to walk for about 5 days when the swelling and pain started to subside.

I hate isotonic drinks but drinking a couple of those through the day helped along with what felt like bathtubs of water.

Get better soon Flowers

bloomflower · 10/07/2022 20:28

aloe vera

JimmyShoo · 10/07/2022 21:11

I was going to suggest bicarbonate of soda as well. Mix to a paste with water, whack it on and leave it to dry. It a messy but it does take burn away.

Baking soda would possibly work as well.

BashfulClam · 10/07/2022 21:29

Definitely aloe gel. I got badly burned in my early twenties. I was wearing a top with spaghetti straps. I sat for 8 hours with no sun lotion in a ‘it’s Scotland…’ my whole upper back was in agony and I had to take 2 days off work as I couldn’t move. I had also gone out the night after being burned and sat on fake leather seats which kept sticking to my skin as hurting me. The best thing I found was cold compresses and keeping my skin moisturised as it tightens up which is awful.

EveParker22 · 11/07/2022 13:06

I have Scottish skin, I know how it feels to be super burnt!

Cold showers always work for me but I found the problem was not applying constantly. I switched to a Grarnier spray (for my face) which really helped and purchased La-Roche Posay long lasting skin cream.

Do you wear SPF 50? I never go below this!!!!!!!

Literally read this this morning so it's not something I've tried & tested. But apparently make some tea (no milk or sugar!), let it cool, then apply to the skin with a cotton wool pad.

TwoEggOmelette · 11/07/2022 14:16

Solarcaine

stayingpositiveifpossible · 11/07/2022 14:32

holland and barrett deliver quickly aloe gel usually at 3 for 2

You can add cold water to a teabag and rub that on as well. Didn’t work for me trying it both ways though.

How are your legs @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz ?

Thanks for checking in. This morning is the first time I have had excruciating pain (what feels like down to the bone) on getting out of bed/or off the couch.

I used some of the tips - aloe Vera gel, applied liberally from yesterday lunch time and today (only arrived yesterday).

Sunday evening I sat with my legs in the shower with cool water on them then lay on the bed with cooler damp teatowels on them (figured easier than leggings) which I switched out regularly.

I've kept my legs up as much as possible (last night I lay on the sofa watching Downton with them raised on a few cushions).

The skin is starting to peel slightly (extremely thinly). They tingle a lot on the surface still but I can absoloutley feel an improvement.

Sorry I didn't see this one - I will give this a go this afternoon see if it offers any relief.

Sorry, first time I havent had excruciating pain.

whenwillthemadnessend · 12/07/2022 13:41

Aloe is the best I've used. Fair skinned family.

KatRee · 12/07/2022 18:29

Glad to hear it's marginally better @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz. Peeling is unpleasant, but I think it's a good sign. I hope you are being looked after!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/07/2022 20:58

Dh has been Way for a few days with work so I've basically coasted with the kids and work. He is back tomorrow and my legs will probably be better again.
