Rinsing rice to use later

mackthepony · 08/07/2022 20:55

Making a biriyani for supper. Have washed the rice already and plan to use it in 2/3 hours. Will it be OK? Shall I refrigerate?

I know advice is to chill rice quickly AFTER cooking, but not sure about protocol when rinsing beforehand.

why do you rinse it?

Hillrunning · 08/07/2022 20:58

Why have you rinsed thw rice?

LoudingVoice · 08/07/2022 20:58

Not sure I’d bother refrigerating it, why did you rinse it so early?

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 08/07/2022 20:58

Never rinsed rice

Lots of rice has instructions to rinse before cooking.

DeanStockwelll · 08/07/2022 20:59

I have never rinsed rice before so I can't be sure , even if you drain it really well won't the moisture soak in and start to soften it ?

there are instructions on rice??? who knew?🙃

mindutopia · 08/07/2022 21:02

Absolutely fine, people have probably been making biriyani like this for centuries.

Mrsjayy · 08/07/2022 21:02

I've never rinsed rice but I put my cooked rice on a large plate to cool evenly then put it in the fridge when it's cool

Hoppinggreen · 08/07/2022 21:02

I rinse rice until the water runs clear.
It will be fine until you cook it OP

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/07/2022 21:03

Never rinse rice.

mindutopia · 08/07/2022 21:03

For those asking, you should always rinse (white) rice to remove the starch before cooking. With biriyani, you often leave it to soak for a period of time as well before cooking.

Mrsjayy · 08/07/2022 21:04

Are "we "rinsing to take the starch off ?

inmyslippers · 08/07/2022 21:05

I'm horrified that people do not rinse rice. Basmati needs rinising and soaking for 30mins minimum ideally an hour. You will have the tastiest fluffiest rice

Yeah I thought this was completely standard!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 08/07/2022 21:08

Never rinse rice, never had complaints.

I do rinse lentils and beans though, because they need to soak.

goodness, how little it takes to horrify you!

Plinkton · 08/07/2022 21:10

I prefer my rice starchy so never rinse it but that's because I prefer cooking Chinese to Indian in which case I might rinse basmati rice if I were going to cook it but tbh I don't think I could be arsed

KittenKong · 08/07/2022 21:13

We rinse rice - usually just let it stand in cool water until ready to cook. It will be fine.

TokenGinger · 08/07/2022 21:16

My DP oversees me washing the rice to make sure I do it properly Grin He's only recently started to trust me with his precious rice cooker six years in.

(This is tongue in cheek, in case anybody thinks my DP might be controlling with food. He's an African man who knows how he likes his rice... and it tastes so much better.)

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 08/07/2022 21:17

Who the hell doesn’t rinse rice?

Hillrunning · 08/07/2022 21:17

My rice is delicious having never rinsed it or known that it has instructions. I'm intrigued though so will rinse next time and see.

DillonPanthersFNL · 08/07/2022 21:17

Always rinse rice! It's a claggy mess otherwise

parrotonthesofa · 08/07/2022 21:21

Did not know this was a thing. Will rinse next time to see!
