Why are people prepared to pay so much for cakes?

The beautifully done handmade birthday cakes etc?

I understand why they cost much with the hours of work that goes into them, but to the end user, why are they worth paying so much more than a decent supermarket cake? I appreciate that they are "better", but 10 or 15 times better?

A lot of supermarket cakes have a weird synthetic kind of taste to me so I don't buy them much. Chocolate cakes are the worst offenders, except M&S chocolate cakes

Because they want to and it's their money. Is a Toast dress 10 times better than a Primark one? Is a top of the range iphone 10 times better than a cheap android? Is a house in London 20 times better than the same house in rural Scotland? People buy what they want to and what they can afford, they don't do a precise calculation of whether each extra pound spent delivers an equivalent return in improved product. Which would be subjective anyway - I'm guessing that you don't think home made cake is much better than supermarket, whereas I actually think it's so much nicer that I would rather eat no cake than supermarket cake.

But the answer to all those questions is yes, except the house one, as they are built to the same standard.

Uh... I want to hear about this? How did you start, why did you stop?

Back to cakes. My child requested a supermarket cake instead of Mummy's amazing how made and decorated cakes. Child regretted the choice, it was lacking in both taste and texture. Shame really as I can do without slaving for hours to make a birthday cake.

Kids eat paper sometimes. I grew out of it eventually.

I've ordered a birthday cake from the woman who did Harry and Meghans girls christening cake for the party 6 weeks ago

It feeds 12 and costs £76 - that's £6 a slice, not much more than a mass produced cake in a coffee shop made with probably not great ingredients

I'm expecting it to be really nice in a way that cheap cake isn't - I bloody love cake and want a good one for my big birthday

Hmm Course she did! 🤣

I have often pondered this and didn’t really understand it either until I realised that I still remember the birthday cake my grandmother made me for my 7th birthday. Yes, you can buy some excellent celebration cakes from the supermarkets but I believe that a cake made and decorated personally for you is something that you always remember.

I tried one and it looked great but the cake wasn't as good as cake box - then I found out they freeze their cakes and then get them out just before needed to decorate

such a shame

but the cake was for an event and it did the job

but I won't bother again

cake box is a great cake and they look pretty, the taste is amazing, so will stick with them in future

Yes, I'm in London and a decent slice of cake is about £5-£6

Everyone chooses what to waste their money on 🤷‍♀️ - I have zero interest in nails or laminating my eyebrows but a £6 slice of cake for my big birthday - fine by me Grin
