Why are people prepared to pay so much for cakes?

The beautifully done handmade birthday cakes etc?

I understand why they cost much with the hours of work that goes into them, but to the end user, why are they worth paying so much more than a decent supermarket cake? I appreciate that they are "better", but 10 or 15 times better?

For me, it’s what it represents. Having a personalised cake made for a celebration. so different to a mass produced.
and yes it’s expensive and requires thought and time put into it. But if it’s an occasion it’s not an every day thing to purchase and that’s what makes it special.
I wouldn’t routinely order one however for day to day coffee and cake with friends.
I would just pop along to local baker or supermarket for that.

No idea. My DC like it that I make theirs, even though they're not as elaborate as the professional ones

Yes, I'm talking about the decorated cakes at £100+

And I’m talking 1/2 per month not just £100 for a birthday which is a special occasion so obviously people will spend more on it .

I’m going to say the taste and the freedom to choose what decoration/style you want.

Personally I bake my own cakes, my children love it as they can be super creative and get to ask for whatever they want for their birthday and I can provide that, it’s not possible to do that if you are buying a supermarket cake.

I also find homemade cakes always taste so much better, they are always so fresh, light and moist, supermarket cakes always tend to be too dry and too sweet.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/07/2022 21:39

Yes Hundredmilesanhour ! From
Violet cakes - I hope it's good, my book group deserves a nice one to help me celebrate

Whoatealltheminieggs · 07/07/2022 21:39

I really appreciate cake decorating as an art so I’ve paid a lot in the past. However last few times I’ve ordered cakes like this they’ve been stale so I’ve started making them myself. It’s a lot of work so I may must go back to paying a professional

wizzywig · 07/07/2022 21:41

I'm the same with alcohol. To me it's utter madness that people pay the prices they do for alcohol

user1487194234 · 07/07/2022 21:42

In my opinion they are just so much nicer
wou never have a supermarket cake for a birthday
My money my choice

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 07/07/2022 21:44

As a kid we always had cakes made at the cake makers. Ive alway done it for all my dcs. Eldest now 16.
But for the last 10 years ive used a local lady. And i can honestly say its the freshest lightest cake.
Dds last one was £130. For the party of 40 plus adults. We brought bottom tier home.
For her actual birthday as wasnt doing much i got a princess cake in tesco maybe £11ish. It was vile. Even my cake lover ds didn't eat it nor the birthday girl.
Dry tasteless and icing like cardboard.
Never again

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 07/07/2022 21:46

Good quality, properly made cakes are so much better than supermarket ones. I say that as a regular buyer of supermarket ones. A good cake is expensive because it should have much better ingredients like good butter etc instead of cheaper alternatives. I can make quite nice tasting cakes myself but have no skill in decorating so if I want something really special I don't mind paying for it. It's similar to going out for a really nice meal isn't it? Probably not 10x better than going to the pub but a treat for a special occasion.

sunshineamongsttheshitstorm · 07/07/2022 21:49

Honestly it's a decor piece not just a cake, it helps bring a party theme together if the cake is made to match and can obviously be a lot more personal to the person, Personalised details, colours etc yes it's alot of money I agree butttt sometimes people don't mind spending on a nice cake if it tastes great, looks great, homemade, completely personal to you yada yada

However I go down the M&S route myself now as I don't have the money to buy cake maker cakes for every occasion the more children I've had. 😂

SpotlessMind88 · 07/07/2022 21:52

The most i would pay for a cake is £60 and that's from Lolas (lucky enough to get a staff discount thanks to my brother). Otherwise i would get a cake from costco (one of those massive sheet cakes covered in buttercream) for £15

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/07/2022 21:21

If you think it's about the look rather than the taste, you've been buying cakes from the wrong place. They should taste amazing! (and usually look amazing too)

I haven't bought cakes from anywhere, as I said. I have tasted many cakes that others have bought however and am confident my home made ones taste better.

ConfusedParticle · 07/07/2022 21:58

I often pay upwards of £3K for a 5 tiered unicorn hair cake with a fondant topping created out of fairy's sweat glands. I feel a bit guilty about the fairy part because I am sure they can feel pain, but the end result is so awfully tasty it simply over rides any compassion I might have for nature spirits or elementals.

I couldn't lower myself to go anywhere near a supermarket cake. That might make me look poor or, worse, lower class. I would advise anyone to spend more than you can reasonably afford, the resulting satisfaction and sense of superiority are so worth it, and your children will thank you in later life, I promise! <3

My dad had 30 at her party, got quoted £120 for the cake. I went down to Asda and bought two tray bakes for £20. I just could not justify that.

Dd not dad lol

YourWinter · 07/07/2022 22:13

I don’t understand people paying £15, £20 or whatever for a supermarket cake. Read the ingredient list and it makes me feel far more sick than the price of a cake home-baked and decorated to order.

Daisycrown · 07/07/2022 22:14

You can get the exact design you want and they don't taste awful like a lot of supermarket ones that imo are just too sweet with no real flavour.
I make our cakes and they're preferred over shop bought.

Daisycrown · 07/07/2022 22:15

@YourWinter

😁 cross post!

RagzRebooted · 07/07/2022 22:17

The fancy decorated ones often turn out to be mostly icing and more looks than taste.
My cakes taste fantastic but usually look a bit crap. I know which I prefer!

Coffeaddict · 07/07/2022 22:18

SnowyLamb · 07/07/2022 21:08

Yes, it's paying a fortune for something that hours have been spent on to make it look beautiful, only to destroy it in minutes that seems odd to me.

A good quality dress/car/piece of furniture, that will be used for years is different IMO.

My mum is very good at making novelty cakes. She made a minitre model of her friends thatched house cottage for the friends big 50th ( which was in this cottage)
The friends was so impressed that she refused to cut the cake and put it on her mantle piece until the cake collapsed at it rotted over a number of months.
My mum was so unimpressed that she didn't get a piece of the cake but the birthday girl was happy 😂

RagzRebooted · 07/07/2022 22:18

I wouldn't personally pay for a cake when I can make one, I'm too tight for that!
My friend makes great looking cakes but never charges enough for them, considering the time and ingredients.

Rosehugger · 07/07/2022 22:18

Supermarket cakes are a waste of calories.

Crinkle77 · 07/07/2022 22:21

I find these big fancy cakes tend to be too sickly and I can't stand that fondant icing that a lot of them have on them. To me they all seem to be style over substance.
