DS1 is working in a bakery

A really good upmarket deli type place.

He brings home the leftovers that would otherwise go in the bin.

Today we have:

2 fruit scones.
6 honey cakes
A loaf of rosemary sour dough
A loaf of rye bread
6 goats cheese quiche
A smoked salmon salad
A egg souffle muffin thing
2 sausage rolls
2 strawberry cakes
A haselnut muffin
3 seeded bagels
5 sesame flatbreads
A chicken pastry
6 English muffins

Ndont mean tonsiund ungrateful, but it's awful. Both DS1 and I get fed our lunch at work, so it's only breakfast and evening meal we need, but I don't want to be eating this kind of thing at every meal. But, I can't throw food away.

None of this stuff keeps. Some can be frozen but there's a limit to how much you want in the freezer.

He sometimes takes some to my parents but they're on holiday. They have charities that take some of it, but they don't really want fish for.

DS1 plans to have the bagels for breakfast. I'll have the egg roll.

I'll have the salad and the chicken pastry for dinner tomorrow.

DS2 will probably eat a flat bread and a cake, aybe a sausage roll, but he eats like a sparrow.

The quiche and the muffins are in the freezer and I've eaten a scone that I didn't want just now.

The loaves will be OK toasted over the weekend.

I'm going to get fat, it's not healthy, but I can't throw it away. It's bothering me that some of it will end up in the bin. DS says that's where it would have gone if he didn't bring it, so if we eat some, that's an improvement, but....

DS2 used to work in a bakery, before he went to university. He used to bring home so much bread and cake that I actually went off both. We used to give any we didn’t want to our neighbours because it was the days prior to the Olio app.

TheSoundOfLunch · 07/07/2022 22:22

Where I am they just put the food outside on a shelf saying Free Leftovers

Libre55 · 07/07/2022 22:37

Do you have a fire / ambulance / police station nearby? If he explains that he works in the shop and shows a name badge or something so they know he’s not some nutter trying to poison them. We have a group locally who feed the homeless every night. Sadly I think there are many such groups in towns now.

We have a local homeless shelter that will always take spare food. They also take it out to the people they know are on the streets. They're amazing people.

We do too good to go at work and you don't need to do it much in advance. We close at six and our collection would be 5.30-6. I could list bags at 4 and they all sell out!

Nat6999 · 08/07/2022 05:50

The playgroup ds used to go to used to have a pile of leftover bread donated from a local bakery for the toddlers to eat, ds used to regularly be running round with half a French stick in his hand.

greentreesgreengrass · 08/07/2022 07:49

I'm not sure what you don't understand. YOU do not need to do anything in advance. Once he brings home the leftovers, list them on the app.

Clevs · 08/07/2022 08:06

Why does he bring it home? Can't he just leave work without bringing any food back with him?

balalake · 08/07/2022 08:52

I think he ought to suggest something whereby there are heavy discounts say in the last hour of the day so food gets sold.

If it is happening same day of each week, then I'd question their planning.

Hope that the suggestions regarding charities etc help. I agree about not throwing away food.

You could put a table outside your door every night with a paper sign saying free, and put stuff on there. Word will soon get around.

Someone near me did this and their neighbours reported there for encouraging vermin

Olio or a local soup kitchen.

The shop could sign up to olio and offer 'magic bags'.

There is a local place that takes Greggs left overs, it gives homeless people a hot meal and a packed lunch for the following day, I found them through Olio.

When I was growing up, our neighbour used to bring bags of food from the bakery. They had a stupid system, they had one day each they could take leftover food home. Hers for Saturday, which was pretty good as there was lots of fresh stuff that would have been ok for Sunday. She used to put four bags on our walls every Saturday afternoon. There was only three of us, but often my friends would come to help out in terms of eating and sometimes take a large cake home.

Such a waste. I work for a well known retail shop and we have staff who are willing to take food to the local homeless kitchen at the end of the day, but they won't take it as they say they can't be sure we've adhered to keeping food cold under health and safety regs - it'd be a case of emptying it out around 6.50pm and dropping off about 7.02pm. Such a shame.

He should ask the deli to set too good to go up. It’s very popular.

SpinningForTheWorld · 08/07/2022 10:34

Sadly, I could name you half a dozen locations in my town, off the top of my head, where homeless people congregate. So sad, yes, but it's useful to know, because you can take food directly to the recipients.

One of these locations is outside the main doors of the Civic Centre (Town Hall). Lots of people head there in the evenings, including a regular band of 'soup kitchen' volunteers who are frequently appealing for contributions. It's felt to be one of the safer places for homeless women; and close to the housing office for 'first thing' visits, safe toilets etc.

OP, you probably have a similar informal set-up near you - a 'known' spot for people in need and volunteers congregating.
