DS1 is working in a bakery

A really good upmarket deli type place.

He brings home the leftovers that would otherwise go in the bin.

Today we have:

2 fruit scones.
6 honey cakes
A loaf of rosemary sour dough
A loaf of rye bread
6 goats cheese quiche
A smoked salmon salad
A egg souffle muffin thing
2 sausage rolls
2 strawberry cakes
A haselnut muffin
3 seeded bagels
5 sesame flatbreads
A chicken pastry
6 English muffins

Ndont mean tonsiund ungrateful, but it's awful. Both DS1 and I get fed our lunch at work, so it's only breakfast and evening meal we need, but I don't want to be eating this kind of thing at every meal. But, I can't throw food away.

None of this stuff keeps. Some can be frozen but there's a limit to how much you want in the freezer.

He sometimes takes some to my parents but they're on holiday. They have charities that take some of it, but they don't really want fish for.

DS1 plans to have the bagels for breakfast. I'll have the egg roll.

I'll have the salad and the chicken pastry for dinner tomorrow.

DS2 will probably eat a flat bread and a cake, aybe a sausage roll, but he eats like a sparrow.

The quiche and the muffins are in the freezer and I've eaten a scone that I didn't want just now.

The loaves will be OK toasted over the weekend.

I'm going to get fat, it's not healthy, but I can't throw it away. It's bothering me that some of it will end up in the bin. DS says that's where it would have gone if he didn't bring it, so if we eat some, that's an improvement, but....

local hospital? One of my colleagues turns up fairly regularly with leftovers from a bakery I think their friend works at… leaves it in the ward’s staff coffee room & it disappears in nanoseconds! Or maybe one of the other emergency services, a school staff room or something similar?

ellaballoo · 07/07/2022 20:33

Is it Gail’s ?
Their egg soufflé muffin is the food of the Gods .
Please post to Manchester?

I once worked in a local authority children's nursery. A large supermarket chain would bring their left over baked goods so parents and carers could take them when they dropped off or collected their children. Sometimes there was a lot and sometimes not very much.
Could the bakery consider something similar?

Kezzie200 · 07/07/2022 20:38

It's because he is new.

My Dad worked in a bakery for years and brought home fresh bread each day in normal amounts and only other stuff if we asked, and it was also available.

He needs to take what you want and will use. Encourage the bakery to sign up to To Good To Go app and sell cheap to people who want it.

Sexnotgender · 07/07/2022 20:39

Definitely get them to sign up to Too good to go.

VioletInsolence · 07/07/2022 20:39

The food already exists so if you can’t give it away what difference does it make whether you throw it in the bin or ruin your health?

Ducksurprise · 07/07/2022 20:41

Just put it on your local fb, people will bite your hand off

lljkk · 07/07/2022 20:47

It annoys me that the nearest regular Olio user (offers) is 6 miles away. She gets stuff from Tesco and wont' give away anything after BBF date. So all sorts of less--popular stuff, she bins. She also wants all pickups at 9-10am (which I can't do). I'd be around there daily if it were more convenient to take that stuff. Not blaming her on the pick up window, but the strict use of BBF dates is daft on say, peaches.

Keep trying OP, I hope you can reduce the food waste.

Kerrrmieee · 07/07/2022 20:50

You can list it privately on Olio. Just list what you have, no need to mention company.

Augend23 · 07/07/2022 20:53

Local hospital is a pretty good idea.

Putting them on Olio privately (but with the bakery's permission probably?) would be another solution.

goldfinchonthelawn · 07/07/2022 20:55

Can he suggest to bosses that they are allowed to give favourite or kind customerds a freebie on their own decision? Pret does that and it feels so good when you are offered something on the house. Really develops customer loyalty. They could also put things down to half price 30 mins before closing time. He could offer to his friends. DS2 has a friend who works in an upmarket bakery and she is always giving him incredible cakes for free that would otherwise go in the bin. He must have some hungry mates. You could offer loaves or quiches ot neighbours on your street Whatsapp?

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 21:03

You could put a table outside your door every night with a paper sign saying free, and put stuff on there. Word will soon get around.

Lovemusic33 · 07/07/2022 21:05

Agree with getting ds to try and get the bakery to sign up to toogoodtogo or similar, it’s a great way of getting rid of leftover food without it going to waste.

erinaceus · 07/07/2022 21:08

Can your son do some research himself into what options might be workable? Following up with a church, food bank and apps are all good ideas. There is a homelessness service near me that drives round at close of business to collect food, which would seem ideal in your situation. Then once your son has a workable solution, discuss with his management putting it in place. I don’t think listing it privately on an app is a workable long-term solution. That’s quite an overhead for him or you.

I don't know, that's what he's been told is the reason they're not doing it.

No they’re saying that the bakery would have to commit to a number of bags, but you as an individual can post on there and not have any commitment.

I think that poster was saying that the bakery themselves would have to commit, but if your son brings it home then you could give it away yourself on olio without having to commit as you're not a business.

She’s said twice that they can’t because they have to commit to a certain number of bags.

Helpimfalling · 07/07/2022 21:17

Olio!

The business might not be able to but OP could list as a private individual when they have too much food

ohmygash · 07/07/2022 21:24

but you (or DS) can post it on olio for collection, you don’t have to know anything in advance

StripeyDeckchair · 07/07/2022 21:34

Sign up to your local Next Door page.
Post a list of what you have and let people message you to collect what they want.

You'll make new friends in the area, might find a few families in need who you can assist on an ad hoc basis & you stop food from being thrown away - a win all round.

Beseen22 · 07/07/2022 21:47

If you have friends who work at a hospital they would definitely take it for nightshift, it would be gone by 11pm. I guess food banks are probably shutting at a similar time to the cafe so the cakes would be going stale by the next day.

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 07/07/2022 21:51

Olio you don't have to commit to a certain amount if not a business.
Loads local to here give stuff away. Random odd bits

ConfusedParticle · 07/07/2022 21:59

so glad it's upmarket OP!
