I think there should be a caretaker Prime Minister, or even have him on gardening leave in Chequers and someone act on his behalf.

More chance of government functioning given there are so many gaps now. Those who resigned might be prepared to come back in the interim, but not if the misogynistic serial liar remains in Downing Street.

OK shall we phrase it slightly differently he's agreed to hand in his resignation however he needs to work his notice period while they find a replacement 😏

No, he absolutely doesn't need to work his notice period. It's what he would like to do but if the Tories have any sense they'll tell him to fuck off now.

There are some very public calls for him to go today - and get someone else in to be caretaker but it's not clear how much traction that will have it's being debated on Radio 4.

I think he'll stop till Autumn - but they need a plan for getting minsters back in place till then.

How can any minister credibly work with him when they've told the world that they can't because of his lack of integrity and honesty? And which ones get to come back? Does that include Gove, Sunak and David? If not, why not? It's not as if the choice should be left to Johnson.

If he resigns as party leader but not as PM, how does that work? There would have to be an acting party leader - how could that person not be PM? And how could he be PM when he has no authority over the Tory party?

Can’t imagine Gove as pm. He makes everyone’s flesh crawl. Mind you so does Mogg. Let’s hope that the end of that lanky creepy steal of piss

They are all desperate to hang on to power. With Murdoch backing. They do not want the Conservatives to go for a centrist Remainer to lead them ...

I don't really understand this either?

It is usual for the leader of the party to remain as PM while a new leader is elected. The difference here is that BJ has hung on to the extent that the majority of the party will no longer work with him, so he can't actually form a Government at the moment and therefore can't run the country properly. If he goes today and an interim leader is appointed it's likely that MP's will be willing to serve in the necessary posts again.

Why I think he'll try and stop but do seem to be many more voices saying no he can't and as they've just said on BBC news PM is an appointment by the Queen - and I can't see the place thanking them for involving them.

As for how can minster work with someone they think it untrustworthy - their politicians and they'll spin it if they need to but it does look like Labour might be willing to call a vote of no confidence now so I do think it's possible he may be gone quicker than thought earlier this morning.
