Is there such a thing as a cheap short break?

I'd love to take my 2 DC away, possibly with my mum. Very limited funds. Any suggestions? We have camping gear but DM is old and while she says she's up fir it I'm not convinced she'd enjoy it!

Looking locally at caravan Holidays, £900 is way too much. Would be happy with 3 nights midweek. We're in Norfolk.

How about looking for a Premier Inn. They are in lots of popular locations and could all fit in one room. Prices are generally very reasonable

Ginisatonic · 06/07/2022 16:50

i agree premier inn could be worth a look. Also look at booking.com. Some self catering on there too.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 06/07/2022 16:50

Sorry but I’m intrigued to know how old this mum is who you think won’t enjoy it. Recently my late 70s mother agreed to come away with me and ddog in a tent!
How about the YHA in Wells? I stayed there. It’s lovely and you can self cater?

Summerwhereareyou · 06/07/2022 16:52

B and b ?

Air b and b?

Yha, they usually do private rooms with en suite and double bed.
Harrington hall in Derbyshire ( possible wrong name) beautiful stunning place...yha.

motogirl · 06/07/2022 16:56

Premier in or similar. Where do you fancy? Cities that are less obvious for a holiday are a good bet. Eg my friends just got back from 3 nights in Leicester and had a great time

felulageller · 06/07/2022 16:58

You can get family rooms for £80 per night. Just search booking app.

shumway · 06/07/2022 16:59

What about airbnb? We had a flat in Hunstanton for a week and it was lovely. Also did it with a caravan in Felixstowe.

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 06/07/2022 17:00

Youth hostels are a good call here. Many now have private rooms or family rooms that can be booked. We stayed in one in Scotland recently in a private room that was superb.

@Dontfuckingsaycheese shes 75, but did NOT STOP MOANING about being cold on a caravan holiday a few years ago. (It wasn't cold....) so I'm worried that she'll be cold abd miserable!

I stayed in a Travelodge in Central Edinburgh for £25 pn earlier this year, but it was at the end of February.
School holidays, probably no chance.

I am always cold and really hate it.
You can get centrally heated caravans, I've stayed in a few.

Pumpkin314 · 06/07/2022 17:19

Take a look a parkdean or hoseasons for caravan holidays. If you're flexible for dates and location it will be easier to find a good deal. We've got a caravan with a hot tub booked for 7 night in Cornwall in the Oct half term for £550. Take your own fan heater to make sure nobody gets cold! (Though if centrally heated I've always found static caravans plenty warm)

Lindy2 · 06/07/2022 17:30

I'd look for a B&B type arrangement or a Premier Inn.

Kids have a free breakfast at Premier Inn if adult breakfasts are booked and paid for. I've always found that very good value.

www.haven.com/search-results/holidays/schoolsummerholidays
Weekend for 300 in some parks including pools etc

Stropalotopus83 · 06/07/2022 17:43

Don't know if there's still any açai or but we've just booked a long weekend (Friday to Monday) in the summer holidays with haven. In one of their save mobile homes but skipped the entertainment package so we can't use their water park kids clubs etc but can use restaurants and takeaways. It's the one in north wales and for a family of four cost £150.

Stropalotopus83 · 06/07/2022 17:43

Available. Not açai - not sure how that happened!

shinynewapple22 · 06/07/2022 17:46

www.ukcaravans4hire.com/

Have a look on this site for renting privately owned caravans directly with the owner - should be cheaper than going via Haven or Park resorts .

I think a caravan is very different from a tent - you wouldn't get me in a tent!

A Monday to Friday booking can be cheaper and you feel as if you have had a whole week .

Sprig1 · 06/07/2022 17:48

I know that uk glamping sites and cottages are finding bookings well down on the previous few yes as people can now go abroad. How about looking for a few that you like the look of. It would be worth emailing to see if they will put together a short break for you, even if they don't advertise them. Many would be grateful for the booking.

Riverlee · 06/07/2022 17:54

Look at youth hostels. You can get family rooms now - you don’t have to share with others. The one I stayed in at Stratford Upon Avon (see photo) was like a mini stately home! They’re definantly worth considering.

Is there such a thing as a cheap short break?
Summerwhereareyou · 06/07/2022 18:06

Travel lodge is grim I wouldn't bother.

Premier Inn is usually better.

Don't bother with caravans!

B and b.

Some absolutely beautiful ones out there!
Air b n b

Yha

Sun holidays start again soon. You don't have to buy the paper, join the 9.50 sun holiday Facebook group. They explain what you have to do and there are loads of real reviews and photos of the places that are available. We've had some lovely trips both in and out of school holidays. They're won't be as much available as there was in January but you're bound to find something... We even enjoyed pointins Grin

ImFree2doasiwant · 06/07/2022 19:57

I'd be happy with a sun holiday! Will they be fir this summer?

If you fancy a city break, Liverpool is fantastic. There’s so much to do and see. I stayed here a few years ago on an impulse weekend away with the kids in a private en-suite room (about £29 per night) and it was great - really fun and perfect for families. It’s very central and in walking distance of pretty much everywhere you want to go. They don’t have parking but it’s available quite cheaply close by. If you do want a beach, Crosby and Formby are 12-15 miles down the road.

ShandaLear · 06/07/2022 20:09

(That should say about (£75 per night).
