hairdresser has done a terrible job on highlights, how to get it fixed?

ihatethecold · 05/07/2022 16:44

Awful, patchy highlights that look, in places like hair extensions have been added to my daughters hair, She is a teen and has asked for blond highlights.. hairdresser knows my daughter and understands how her hair is. The result is amateur and looks like a bad home job.

My DD is very upset but couldn't say anything at the end of the appointment. We need to get her hair sorted and we will tell the hairdresser but i'm loathed to send her back incase she messes up again.

we haven't paid yet (£75) and I don't know how to manage this, My DD is going to have to spend her money fixing her hair.

Where do we stand with this?

Any advice

Have you got a picture? I had horrendously botched highlights, I rang the salon and explained my concerns to the manager who invited me in and was equally horrified and fixed it for me herself.

Can you post a pic?

Is there a more senior person that you could ask for it to be fixed? First port of call is asking them to fix it free of charge before spending more money

SoSo19 · 05/07/2022 18:56

Do you have photos?

You need to notify the salon straight away that you’re unhappy with the result, the sooner the better.

See what they offer and then decide if you want to accept. Would you be happy with another hairdresser at the same salon fixing it for example?

Frequency · 05/07/2022 18:56

Ask the hairdresser to add some lowlights to break up the patchy bits.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 05/07/2022 19:13

I would ring and ask to talk to the manager and calmly explain what has happened and how terrible it is and can she get a senior stylist to fix it and then pay her if you are happy. They should be happy to do this and if not I would not pay. Hope you get it sorted for your daughter as horrible at the age to feel self conscious of anything.

Can’t advise without pictures

ZaraSizeMedium · 05/07/2022 19:30

You haven't paid yet? I take it this wasn't a salon job then?

Undecided111 · 05/07/2022 19:33

I’m assuming it wasn’t a salon if you haven’t paid yet, just a hairdresser who comes to your home etc.. that kind of thing?

ihatethecold · 05/07/2022 20:38

It’s a lady who has a salon in our village.
she doesn’t have a card machine so it’s cash or bank transfer.
my dd has but the bullet and texted to say she isnt happy.
she’s going back in tomorrow to get the patches sorted.
I really hope she doesn’t mess up again.

So my daughter went back today to get the offending bits sorted.
its really not much better.

still looks like an amateur job.

she said she wants to deal with it tomorrow.
I think she’s going to just pay the £75 and try get someone to fix it elsewhere.

i personally don’t think she should pay.

She has to pay, they have provided a service and used products, TWICE! Just not paying is not how it works. Pay to have it done at a more reputable salon.

Really?! It doesn't matter how many times they've used products if they don't know what they're doing and the end result is wrong.

However without a photo it's hard to say how bad it is and therefore unprofessional and not fit for purpose and not worth paying for, or if it's more a case of mismatched expectations.

ihatethecold · 06/07/2022 20:23

It’s not mismatched expectations. It’s bad highlights.
I can’t post a picture. My dd has gone out and is very upset. She wouldn’t want her hair on mumsnet.

My daughter wouldn’t not pay. But to pay £75 for a bodge job seems very unfair
she will have to find more money to get it put right.

No, that's not how consumer law works.

Highlights can easily go wrong. I would hope most decent stylists would correct any mistakes before allowing a client to leave but I can understand how they went wrong. Bleach expands and if it expands beyond the edge of the foil you'll get bleeding/patches. Every stylist has dealt with bleeding foils at some point no matter how good they are.

However, it is easy to fix. I can understand the initial mistake but how did it go wrong when she fixed it? It's a simple case of foiling through some low lights matched to the base colour to break up the patches or adding a root drag depending on the client's preference. Colour doesn't expand the way bleach does so bleeding isn't an issue.

Can you post a pic with DD's face blocked out so we can advise?

ihatethecold · 06/07/2022 21:32

I can tomorrow if she’s ok with it.
the hairdresser put a few foils in today and sent my dd home to rinse it out after 45 mins. 🥴

That's really unproffessional. Was it colour or bleach she left in do you know? I wouldn't pay. Her insurance will tell her she hasn't got a leg to stand on if she tries to sue.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/07/2022 12:59

Someone did this to mine, it was absolutely unacceptable and looked just awful. I rang the manager when I got home and asked a senior to correct it and they did it again no charge.
The second job was much better.
I still didn't go back there again though.

ihatethecold · 07/07/2022 19:25

My daughter decided, and I commend her bravery, to say that she will pay half for the products used and that she will have to pay money to get another hairdresser to fix it.
she has been in contact with another professional who will see her tomorrow for a consultation and allergy test.
the other hairdresser commented on the photo my dd sent that she was surprised a professional hairdresser did this to her hair.

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 07/07/2022 19:30

She sent her home with the foils on? Blimey. Shock

Theblacksheepandme · 07/07/2022 19:56

I think your daughter sounds brilliant on how she dealt with this. Hopefully the other hairdresser will sort it out. I have had my fair share of hair disasters over the years and it feels like the end of the world at the time.
