hairdresser has done a terrible job on highlights, how to get it fixed?

Awful, patchy highlights that look, in places like hair extensions have been added to my daughters hair, She is a teen and has asked for blond highlights.. hairdresser knows my daughter and understands how her hair is. The result is amateur and looks like a bad home job.

My DD is very upset but couldn't say anything at the end of the appointment. We need to get her hair sorted and we will tell the hairdresser but i'm loathed to send her back incase she messes up again.

we haven't paid yet (£75) and I don't know how to manage this, My DD is going to have to spend her money fixing her hair.

Where do we stand with this?

Any advice

Hi Frequency, you sound like you know what you are talking about so maybe a hair stylist yourself..? Hope the DD got her got sorted it’s a big chunk of her spending money. I have also just had highlights at a new salon and asked for a creamy shade (showed photos) but thought I should have 2 shades so as not to be a block colour. The foils were on for over an hour and then a ‘creamy’ toner applied. I don’t normally have a toner, the foils were checked after 25 mins to get the desired shade and washed off. Every time I have had a toner in the past I wasn’t happy with the outcome it made the blond too dark. The colour l have now is honey and dark blond it looks more caramel and and because I have washed it a few times the tint has gone a coppery shade so no creamy highlights. Do I have a case to complain, i dislike the thought as all the staff were lovely. I struggling to think how it can be sorted, hate the thought of more bleach as my hair is always on the dry side am thinking of the damage. My daughter pointed out I should have been shown a shade chart.

Hi @Digon I trained as a stylist but only actually worked in the field for a few months. I wasn't happy being self-employed or part time and most stylists work on a freelance/hire-a-chair basis or are part-time. I only do friends/family now. I get bored quickly and have a habit of career hopping Grin

If you are unhappy you have the right to complain, however, the salon don't have to do anything to correct the issue if they don't think they've messed up. Toners aren't very long-lasting, unfortunately. It's common/expected for them to wash out. They should usually last 6 weeks-ish, though, and would then need refreshing.

The salon can put another toner on or can put a demi colour on as a toner (which might be what they did anyway). Demis tend to last longer than true toners but are slightly more damaging as they require mild peroxide.

60 minutes isn't too bad for bleach depending on the bleach/peroxide used. The most modern technique is "low and slow" eg use a milder peroxide and leave it on longer as this is less damaging and today's bleach formulas can be left on for up to 90 minutes, especially with low-volume developers and additives like Olaplex.

If the salon refuses to fix it for free or you want to try it at home use a blue shampoo. Fanola No More Orange is the one most stylists prefer.

Thankyou so much for your in-depth reply. I was unaware of the low and slow method, it’s just I feel so dark and drab. I have had a text from the salon to rate my experience so will reply to that and see what develops.x

Toners can make the base colour appear lighter but if you want it a lot lighter you will need more bleach.

Ask if you can go into the salon to discuss and take lots of pictures of what you expected/wanted and go from there. If they have sent you a text asking for feedback it sounds like they take their reputation and customer satisfaction seriously so they should be willing to work with you.

Yes I agree, I shouldn’t have left it so near Xmas as I have limited time to go back to the salon. I did show photos to the stylist for her to have an idea🤷‍♀️I’m at a loss as to why the bleach highlights are so dark, that’s the toner I imagine but then what toner gives you lighter creamy highlights.x
