How to make overnight oats taste good?

I'm sorry if this is a silly question but I'm not sure how you make them exactly and online recipes are a bit confusing bc they don't seem to always specify when exactly to add the ingredients like if I'm supposed to add the ingredients and then store in the fridge or if some of the stuff needs to be added last minute? I have oat milk, oats, almond butter, cinnamon, vanilla syrup, chia seeds, and blueberries.. Is there anything else I might need? And can someone be so kind and tell me how exactly I should do this

Cook them 😅

I love porridge. But really can't get in to overnight oats. They always look so good and I feel I SHOULD like them but I don't like the texture. My daughter likes them though.

Sorry, someone much more useful than me will be along soon.

Just experiment! Mix something up and see if you like it.

By experimenting I discovered that I like mine with one part apple juice to two parts milk.

ludocris · 05/07/2022 10:17

It's really just a case of experimenting until you find the combination that you like the most. I would suggest something like a third of a cup of oats with enough oat milk to cover them plus an extra splash of the milk and/or a dollop of Greek yoghurt and stir in a teaspoon of chia seeds and a teaspoon of almond butter (can't remember the exact list of ingredients you have). Put that in the fridge in the evening. In the morning add fresh berries and eat. Alternatively you could use frozen berries, in which case add them the night before so that they defrost, and as they do so, release some lovely juice into the rest of the mixture.

Just remembered you have cinnamon - I'd add that the night before too.

I used to make them with a quarter of a can of Tesco's breakfast apricots, some chopped dates and walnuts, and raspberries. It was divine.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 05/07/2022 10:23

I do 120g greek yoghurt (not greek style) and 20g of oat bran plus vanilla paste and a few splashes of oat milk but cow milk would be fine. I do the fruit in the morning.

AppleKatie · 05/07/2022 10:23

I came on to say make porridge in the morning 😂

it takes 2 minutes and isn’t disgusting.

sorry that’s not terribly helpful, but it is true!

bathroomshell · 05/07/2022 10:25

Also want the answer. Mine come out split if I do frozen berries yoghurt and oats and it looks awful in the morning all curdled

D0lphine · 05/07/2022 10:27

Not a fan of overnight oats. Baby food.

SandieCollins · 05/07/2022 10:27

I agree, overnight oats feel like the emperors new clothes to me. We’re supposed to like them but you have to pile so much stuff in them to make it tolerable (and even then it’s still cold). Just make porridge, add a handful of frozen fruit when it’s cooking if you want to be fancy. Or banana and peanut butter. Or preferably just sugar

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 05/07/2022 10:27

I think crushed walnuts are the secret - walnuts, berries, and because I pick the sharp berries, a drizzle of maple syrup and I think it's delicious.....

Bobishere · 05/07/2022 10:30

Oats, milk and a dash of vanilla extract. Pop them in the fridge overnight, then add banana and a small amount of syrup to eat.

Dbop100 · 05/07/2022 10:31

I like to grate an apple the stir in with oats and yogurt and chia seeds. I don't leave them overnight I just do it all in the morning. Top with berries or any fruit you have that needs to be used up x

Timeforabiscuit · 05/07/2022 10:42

It really is just a case of experimenting, I like making mine up with water, frozen raspberries and a pinch of salt - chia seeds are nice but get stuck in my teeth.

pensionconfusion · 05/07/2022 10:49

Have a look on Instagram. Loads of good recipes that taste amazing.

My favourite is oats mixed with low fat yogurt and topped with frozen blueberries and a small drizzle of maple syrup.

Grated carrot, raisins, a couple of chopped walnuts and some sweet spices make carrot cake flavoured oats.

I've also made some with a cracking chocolate top that is added in the morning.

Shoopshoopshoopshoopshoop · 05/07/2022 10:49

You need texture, something crunchy like nuts on top.

Grated apple is lovely too, look for Bircher muesli recipes too

WithFlamingLocksOfAuburnHair · 05/07/2022 10:50

I like it made with orange juice and plain yoghurt, some honey, grated apple, then berries, dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Left overnight in fridge. You could save the berries, nuts and seeds to add in the morning. Whatever soaks overnight will soften and go squishy, so think of what you want soft versus what you want to keep its texture. You need a mix of textures so it doesn't taste like baby food. You also want some liquid to come from juice/fruit (not just milk/yoghurt) so it's not too dense, the acid in the fruit lightens it up a bit. Also look up bircher museli for inspiration.

theshadeofgreen · 05/07/2022 10:52

Oh I loveeeee overnight oats!!

I use a jar with an airtight lid, fill maybe 2/3 with oats then cover with alpro coconut/rice/whatever milk. Top with berries, seeds etc... Whatever u fancy then add a drizzle of honey.

Shut the lid, pop in the fridge and then mix up before eating for breakfast.

SO GOOD Grin

nbrown2022x · 05/07/2022 10:57

I love overnight oats. I do the following.

Weigh out 40g of oats (I use Scotts)
2x vanilla & chocolate fat and sugar free yoghurts
Mix all together

Leave in fridge overnight and in the morning too with fruit xxx

livingthegoodlife · 05/07/2022 10:57

i do one tub of the cheapest greek yoghurt (45p ish at aldi), a pile of oats, about 1/4 of a packet of mixed frozen summer fruits and 2 grated apples.

You can add a little bit of honey for sweetness but i don't think it needs it.

Put it all together the night before and give a good stir in the morning. In our house this lasts about 3-4 days ish.

very tasty and like a summer porridge.

LaWench · 05/07/2022 10:57

I make overnight oats with the cheapest oats from Lidl by just soaking in water. These oats take ages to soften up, I like rice pudding consistency. In the morning I add a splash of milk, cinnamon, brown sugar and a smidge of nutmeg and heat in the microwave, I don't like cold oats. Delicious, cinnamon bun flavour. Sometimes I'll add frozen fruit instead of cinnamon before heating.

I've tried adding custard powder so it tastes like custard rice but haven't got it quite right yet.

Talipesmum · 05/07/2022 11:01

I genuinely do not understand overnight oats. I just eat oats. Tip them into my breakfast bowl in the morning, add a handful of muesli for texture, pour milk over, and eat. No need to leave them soaking into a soggy mess overnight. If I wanted all sorts of other things in there I’d add them to the bowl in the morning at the same time.

SandieCollins · 05/07/2022 11:04

I made granola the other day, now that is delicious and really easy (if you don’t try and make too much like I did and need to cook it for ages)

AlisonDonut · 05/07/2022 11:06

Put half a cup of oats in a jar. You have to use the big oats not the small ones otherwise they are like gruel.

Cover with milk. Add a scoop of yogurt. I'd then add a handful of frozen fruit - usually either strawberries or blueberries. Then pop in overnight. In the morning, add a drizzle of honey and leave for 10 mins to let the ice cold edge off them and dive in.

I can't get the big oats over here in France otherwise I'd still be having it for breakfast. The Waitrose gluten free ones used to be my oats of choice for this.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2022 11:06

No need to leave them soaking into a soggy mess overnight.

they don't become a soggy mess, it's more of a porridge creamy consistency.

toastofthetown · 05/07/2022 11:08

I like them, but I don’t like the texture of rolled oats cooked for just a couple of minutes. Chia seeds soaked in liquid are revolting to me though. I’d save those and sprinkle on fresh to avoid the hideous jelly texture.
