Would your partner be familiar with the term Ms?

Dd came home from school with news of who her teacher will be for next year and when she told DH he said oh Mrs Brown, she sounds great. DD then corrected him and said it's not Mrs Brown, it's Ms Brown as this is obviously what they'd been told in school. DH was very confused, was it Miss or Mrs? He had never heard of the term Ms before and had no idea what it meant. Would your partner have known this?

My DH knows it as I use it.

Dogmatix34 · 05/07/2022 08:54

Yes! Definitely, quite common and has been for years.

PurpleDaisies · 05/07/2022 08:54

Yes-it’s not exactly obscure

dementedpixie · 05/07/2022 08:54

Yes of course
You can use Ms when you don't want to announce your marital status to the world

JiminyGlick · 05/07/2022 08:55

Ms has been in use for decades. How can your DH have missed it?

maryleboneym · 05/07/2022 08:56

But of course

Is your H just trying to belittle this title and dismissing it?

CMOTDibbler · 05/07/2022 08:56

Yes of course, I've used Ms for 37 years, and married to DH for 25 of those so he'd better be!

NightmareSlashDelightful · 05/07/2022 08:57

Definitely. DH’s mum has been a Ms officially since the 1980s. And I had several teachers who used it at school in the early 90s.

HarryPopper · 05/07/2022 08:59

Yes my DH knows of the title Ms.
Is your partner from another country?

coffeecupsandfairylights · 05/07/2022 08:59

Yeah, of course.

Phlewf · 05/07/2022 09:01

I use it and dh assumed ( but wasn’t bothered) that I was divorced as the only women he knew who used it were divorced but a 30s conversation cleared it up. This was 20 odd years ago.

My DH knows it as I use it.

Same here. Strange question. Forms always include a box for Ms.

brookstar · 05/07/2022 09:03

I think it's very odd that an adult hasn't come across this title before.

Crabwoman · 05/07/2022 09:04

Yes of course.

Also, it's on every drop down title list/tick box form and has been since I was a kid. And I'm in my late 30's

Is your DH from the 1950's?

addler · 05/07/2022 09:04

Yes, because I use it, but also knew it before we met. Even if he doesn't know anyone who uses it it's in every title drop down box online, how can you miss it?!

confusedlots · 05/07/2022 13:37

Yes he is from this country. I thought it was very odd that he'd never heard of it, never mind know what it meant.

Vallmo47 · 05/07/2022 13:38

Of course.

Musmerian · 05/07/2022 13:38

It’s 2022 - so yes.

My DH knows it as I use it.

Yes, I do too since I was 17 and I'm over 50 now .

nannybeach · 05/07/2022 13:43

My DH and I are from the 1950s. When I got divorced,I debated return to maiden name,it was complicated then, and didn't feel it was fair on my DKs,I wasn't Mrs anymore,so I chose MS

Awrite · 05/07/2022 13:45

Yes, he's not an idiot.

FourChimneys · 05/07/2022 13:47

Yes.

stuntbubbles · 05/07/2022 13:50

Yes, and not only because I’m a Ms and so is our 3yo daughter, but because he’s not from the 1900s! I’m seriously surprised he’s never heard this, how?! He’s never used a drop-down menu on an online form?

VodselForDinner · 05/07/2022 13:50

Yes, he’s perfectly familiar with my formal title.

AppleHa · 05/07/2022 13:54

Of course he would! I have been Ms since I was 18. He knows that.
Has your DH seen it written down but didn’t know how it was pronounced?
I write for a magazine where all women are called Ms by default when they are quoted, and all men are Mr. If he read that he would definitely have seen the word! And what about Ms Marvel?
