Urgent - how to make yourself sick - raw chicken eaten

Bit of a disaster - my shopping delivery arrived and as I was unpacking I discovered a couple of items were a bit slimey inside the clear bags. I couldn't work out what it was initially. I cut my finger on a sharp bit of plastic from a chicken container and without thinking put it in my mouth to discover that chicken container 1's sharp bit had punctured chicken container 2 and all of the fresh shopping was covered in raw chicken juice.
I have read threads on here which suggest that people might want to make themselves sick having consumed raw chicken - I am very immuno suppressed so maybe I should. But how?

OP posts:

Also immune suppressed.

You'll be fine.

RedCardigan · 04/07/2022 17:10

All those saying you won’t get ill liking your fingers, why is it that there is such a thing about washing your hands and surfaces after raw chicken through this very contamination?

OP sorry people are dismissive. It’s a huge worry for you. I’d probably do something more like drink some apple cider vinegar and maybe put the house in order in case I did get ill.

A can of Full fat coke kills river water so will definitely kill off any raw chicken bugs. (Ideally from a vending machine in a youth group centre)

You'll be fine.

You'll feel rotten tomorrow anyway because the stress will make everything speed up/slow down, so you can blame the chicken for that.

IcakethereforeIam · 04/07/2022 17:15

If the chicken was in date it's unlikely to have a large amount of nasty bacteria on it. Any that were there would have been further diluted by your saliva and would have to survive your digestive system in order to make you ill. You should be fine but I don't blame you for being alarmed.

If you're going to use the chicken get it cooked ASAP, the use-by date has obviously been compromised by the puncture. Frankly, I'd be tempted to get a refund, you don't know how long it may have been open for. It should be fine if it smells okay, but as it's not your error, why take the chance.

The store should really pack raw meats in their own bag to prevent cross contamination.

LMAO 🤣

Yeah being immunosuppressed and at risk of death from food poisoning is hilarious 🙄

SmileyPiuPiu · 04/07/2022 17:21

To all those people who think this is hilarious would you lick a raw chicken?

Licking the edge of your finger after touching raw chicken juice isn't the same as getting it all over your hands and the kitchen sides, and then proceeding to open the fridge, eat an apple, touch all the door handles, touch your children etc.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 04/07/2022 17:23

Skinnermarink · 04/07/2022 17:21

Yeah 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, no, because that would be a bit weird Grin

But I'm pretty positive I've accidentally touched my hands to my face or put them near my mouth while handling raw meat in the past, so I wouldn't panic about it in the slightest either.

Really?

How much chicken juice is needed to make someone ill?

Skinnermarink · 04/07/2022 17:24

SmileyPiuPiu · 04/07/2022 17:23

Really?

Well it’s not something you’d do deliberately is it generally. But no sense in freaking out about a lick, at all.

It wouldn't be likely to make us ill if we did, and throwing up wouldn't help in that event anyway.

IcakethereforeIam · 04/07/2022 17:25

Funnily enough I was thinking earlier about the chicken in Rocky 3, though that one was very raw Smile.

iklboo · 04/07/2022 17:26

Please don't make yourself sick. It won't work like you think it will. You'll probably be fine. Try not to worry too much about it.

I mean, I don't have an exact amount lol.

But it's about probabilities, isn't it? The amount you'd ingest from licking one finger is tiny - it's not even something that would cross my mind as a problem.

Sorry but this answer is CLASSIC MN! 'Put your house in order'. Why not order a coffin too while you're still able?

OP you'll be fine fgs.

Watchkeys · 04/07/2022 17:37

@RedCardigan

why is it that there is such a thing about washing your hands and surfaces after raw chicken through this very contamination

Because there's a tiny risk of illness. Bit like wearing a seatbelt. Very very unlikely to crash, but just in case. Deeply alarmist to make OP feel she's likely to be ill, here. She isn't.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 04/07/2022 17:43

I had campylobacter when heavily pregnant. Was not fun and I felt ill for weeks.
The thing with campylobacter is that it only needs a very small viral load to be very effective.

I would say making yourself sick won't do anything and it's a case of watch and see. If you're healthy you should be ok.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 04/07/2022 17:46

Or bacterial load! I don't know the exact terminology. So don't sue me! 👀😂

EarringsandLipstick · 04/07/2022 17:48

I'm not discounting that OP is immuno-suppressed but the reason why would be relevant - eg if you are a transplant recipient, you are in no greater risk (in this specific situation) than anyone else. Obviously there are many other ways you can be immuno-compromised that might be more problematic should you be affected by coming in contact with raw chicken.

Broadly, one small contact like this is highly unlikely to have problematic side effects, and you do need to consider how to manage your anxiety.

FoxyLadyBoutique · 04/07/2022 17:50

Activated charcoal powder mixed in a big glass of water.

Or just a big glass of water.

l think you’ll be all right. Try not to worry.

tootiredtoocare · 04/07/2022 17:51

Yuk! Drink lots of water, it's only a tiny bit so should be fine, I would think. Also, it was fresh chicken so the chances of there being a problem are quite low.
