I break kettles. Help.

As the title says I and my family break kettles. We have gone through about 6 in the last decade - usually buy mid priced ones. We've had a De'Longhi, Russell Hobbs, breville.... we do drink quite a lot of hot drinks but I can't understand it. Current kettle has recently stopped boiling and cuts off too early.

Talk to me about your bulletproof kettles. I'm willing to spend quite a lot if it lasts.

Hob top kettle.

DeePlume · 04/07/2022 06:31

I had a Phillips one for 10 years. It broke about 3 years ago and I've had 3 since. I miss that kettle.

TibetanTerrah · 04/07/2022 06:33

Are you in a hardwater area and it's limescale buildup or are you just cursed?Grin

ScarlettDarling · 04/07/2022 06:34

I’m with you...I break kettles too. And microwaves🤷🏻‍♀️

CafeCremeMerci · 04/07/2022 06:37

Just lurking for kettle suggestions. I bought a cheap ish kettle when I moved in to do until I replaced the kitchen & would then buy a nice one... 12 years later I'm still 'making do' with both!! But last week the kettle started leaking...

keiratwiceknightly · 04/07/2022 06:37

We do live in a hard water area. But I descale regularly.... so cursed, I reckon.

Don't want hob top. Too slow.

Tesco fast boil one it's about 13 quid.
I've had 2 in 14 yrs!
White or black.

TibetanTerrah · 04/07/2022 06:51

How strange. I bought a mid range asda one four years ago and it's still going strong, and I drink a lot of coffee.

Actually maybe I shouldn't have posted as you'll have passed the curse to me and it'll break now!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/07/2022 06:51

IME expensive kettles are all fur coat and no knickers.
Cheap is the way to go. £20 ish. We have a glass one from the local hardware shop that appears to be pretty bullet proof. Make is “Haden”.

FiveShelties · 04/07/2022 06:54

I break them too, and have now started buying cheap ones. Last one cost $30, about 15GPB and is just over 2 years old. I have had all the big name expensive ones and all of them gave up quickly.

LittleSockOfHorrors · 04/07/2022 06:54

How regularly?

I have a glass kettle with no visible element and I can see limescale the next day after descaling it.

So if you aren't doing it weekly and it has an exposed element it could be that.

KarrotKake · 04/07/2022 06:58

Buy cheaper!
No fancy colour changes, sensors, descaling promises. Just a plain kettle.

fudfootedfannybangle · 04/07/2022 06:59

I recently broke a cheap and cheerful (had lasted 5+ years) so dug the stovetop out of the shed. My electricity DOUBLED in a week! 😲 cheaper to buy disposable smegs than use a stovetop at current leccy prices. 😂

LadyEloise1 · 04/07/2022 07:09

Tesco kettles are great. Last for ages.

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 04/07/2022 07:11

I live in a hard water area and I went with a Brita filter kettle which seems to be doing okay so far..

AlisonDonut · 04/07/2022 07:15

Are you boiling a whole full kettle each time or just what you need?

Anewchicken · 04/07/2022 07:21

Take out a subscription to ‘ Which?’ And always buy a product highly rated for reliability and low energy consumption. - I was kicking myself the year that I did not do this and bought a duff washing machine

StroppyTop · 04/07/2022 07:35

Agree with PPs - Go the other way and spend less. My £20 Sainsburys one is about 5 yrs old 🤞

SomethingAboutNothing · 04/07/2022 07:37

Are you over filling it? Do you empty the old water before refilling? It could be how you are using it that is the problem.

BertieBotts · 04/07/2022 07:44

Have you had an electrician check that plug socket? I don't think I've ever had a kettle break until it was about 20+ years old.

I usually buy cheap ones.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/07/2022 07:46

In a 'cowboy film' I saw, they just stuck a metal kettle into the fire and that never broke and they crossed the whole of North America. And were attacked by Injuns.

You could try that.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/07/2022 07:47

They're designed to stop working after 2 years which is when their guarantee expires! We're the same. Currently on a Bosch version of the Kitchen Aid and it's brilliant,I'm hoping it'll last , seems like it's designed well .

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 04/07/2022 08:05

I replaced my last short lived electric kettle with a cheap stainless steel hob top whistling kettle which has lasted 3 years with no sign of any issues so far. I love it.

This is it.

I break kettles. Help.
Cuddliesrule · 04/07/2022 08:08

Brita filter kettle all the way. I live in a very hard water area, mine has been going strong for 5 years and no signs of breaking yet (touches wood)
