Uk Government. Hates us

Here we go again. I have just come back to Japan from Greece. (so far ok?) My daughters passport (including her 2 children) were stolen/lost. I do not want to cast a cloud on something I do not know. What I do know is: the Japanese embassy were not helpful and made the whole thing more stressful. As they said we can't do anything. But after 2 days of asking they were given temporary visa to return to Japan. As a Brit I thought our country would never do that to us. How wrong I am. First you must pay 100 pounds per passport. if you have nobody. tough! I hope nobody has their passport lost or stolen. Our embassies are not here to help us.

i'm confused. wouldn't anyone have to pay for a "new" passport regardless of whether it was lost or out of date?

shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:14

No, it isn't a renewal they were asking for it was a emergency passport to ge tback into the country. So They are punished for being victims of a crime

The embassies are not there to help you. Ask any of the Aussies who were shut out of Australia during Covid. If you travel outside of your own country, do not expect much assistance. Sad but true.

TirednExhausted · 02/07/2022 23:16

When mine was stolen I claimed the fee back on travel insurance.

You're being very dramatic, this is standard for lots of countries. The UK government is shit in many ways, but this isnt one of them.

apapuchi · 02/07/2022 23:16

Did they have travel insurance? I'm sure you can claim this + costs (travel to appointments, delay in travelling) if so. They'd need a police report/crime reference. It's a nightmare but at least they did get sorted.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 02/07/2022 23:18

As others have said, it's usually covered in travel insurance. And if they didn't have travel insurance, that's their error, not any governments.

shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:19

Do you think? It is ok to be treated as a criminal when either you have lost or had your passport stolen?
Even though you have 2 children in tow and yes they are nationals.

OP posts:
shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:23

done all and have. but the point is; hat is the point of our chipped and expensive passports if they mean nothing? When we have to go to the embassy

OP posts:
leeds2glasgow · 02/07/2022 23:23

Not sure why it matters there's children involved?

shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:26

You need to get a flight. your children need to go to school. How is insurance going to help you? If your embassy will not give you a emergency passport. Again. 2 infants in tow

OP posts:
shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:27

ever heard kids

Mamamia7962 · 02/07/2022 23:27

In your 1st post you say lost or stolen. So how do you know for definite they have been victims of crime?

fallfallfall · 02/07/2022 23:28

passports are expensive and it's a privilege to own one. yes it costs money to replace one regardless of why it needs replacing.
i'm surprised, did you think the replacement would be free?

TirednExhausted · 02/07/2022 23:29

They did though? Two days is the normal time it takes to process the emergency travel document.

fallfallfall · 02/07/2022 23:29

why would anyone care if the person/people with the lost or stolen passports need to go to work or school? genuine question neither work or school is a life or death situation.

shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:31

Money isn't a matter here. The Embassies are at fault. they made a very stressful situation more stressful. Aren't they there to help us. Not lock us out and give us a hard time?

OP posts:
Nocutenamesleft · 02/07/2022 23:34

Can’t you get the money back through your insurance?

or did you not have insurance? If not how is that the governments fault?

shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:35

you are right, it isn't. But the embassies are paid for by us and represent us and are there to help us. Not give us a hard time.

OP posts:
TirednExhausted · 02/07/2022 23:36

So how did they give a hard time?

fallfallfall · 02/07/2022 23:36

It sounds like you’ve made yourself stressed by being unaware it takes a few days and cash to organize an emergency passport.

shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:36

Money isn't a problem for us. But what is it was

OP posts:
shunkodai · 02/07/2022 23:39

I hope you never need one.

OP posts:
fallfallfall · 02/07/2022 23:39

If money is a problem you know where your passport is and don’t loose it.

Sprogonthetyne · 02/07/2022 23:40

I understand it must have been a stressful experience, but I don't feel the government or embassy are at fault here. Your daughter and kids had lost their passports, so presumably some checks needed doing to confirm who they are, that there was a record of the passports having existed and that the passports weren't being used by someone else. Otherwise anyone could just turn up with that story and ask for a passport/ visa.

All of that is going to take time, and two days seems a reasonable time frame for the amount of work involved. It's also going to have a cost attached, because of the manpower to do those checks and produce the new documents.

Mamamia7962 · 02/07/2022 23:40

What did you want the embassy to do that they didn't do?
