What exactly do you do with yourself when you're listening to an audible book?

Just that really.

I've always said I wouldn't do it because I'm not quite sure what you're supposed to do at the same time. Just lie there? Stare at something? Or maybe you listen when you're doing housework

Anyway, I've been swimming a lot these past few months and can listen to a podcast just fine but I'm considering a book. But what happens if I get into the book and want to listen at other times? I just sit there doing it?

Tell me when you listen and how you concentrate as I just know my mind would drift

Tend to listen when I'm in the bath or cleaning

Changechangychange · 02/07/2022 22:01

I tend to have it one when I’m driving, or doing housework. When you would usually have the radio on, basically.

Unescorted · 02/07/2022 22:02

I listen when I am walking / riding my bike or on the train.

Walk the dog, drive the car. Sometimes cook. I struggle just sitting and listening.

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 02/07/2022 22:03

The car is a good place.

i sometimes listen to an audiobook when I go to bed. Not one I care about the story too much though because it sends me to sleep.

FinallyHere · 02/07/2022 22:03

The ultimate luxury is to have the kindle and audible version of a book. At night, I read until my eyes are tired then switch to audible to drift off to sleep.

I also listen when I am cooking, or driving or walking. Anything really.

HappyMediocreTime · 02/07/2022 22:04

I can’t just listen to it on its own. I get distracted. It’s perfect for tasks I don’t especially care about that need doing such as driving somewhere or doing the kitchen

Aksbdt · 02/07/2022 22:04

I’ve started doing this for 10-15 minutes before I go to bed, it started when I had a migraine but wasn’t tired. It tests my ability to not aimlessly scroll on my phone and is quite relaxing

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 02/07/2022 22:04

I listen on the first half of my commute - walking to the station, before working on the train. I also listen in the car when I'm on my own (books usually not appropriate for DC to hear) and when I'm putting the washing out. If I go away for work I also listen as I go to bed otherwise I can't sleep.

blueskyeve · 02/07/2022 22:07

I listen when I'm cleaning or cooking. Sometimes in the car.

theveg · 02/07/2022 22:08

I listen when driving, cooking, dog walks, boring housework tasks like sorting out laundry, and my ultimate favourite, doing cross-stitch. Could never sit listening doing nothing.

samthebordercollie · 02/07/2022 22:09

When I'm running, cycling, walking, doing gardening, housework, driving. I don't have time to sit down and actually read a book. Listening is a good alternative.

HardRockOwl · 02/07/2022 22:09

OK - so it's not something you do when you're just sat on the sofa then. It's always puzzled me as I'm easily distracted.

I can see it would be useful to listen as you're doing housework or out walking

While I am driving

Ponderingwindow · 02/07/2022 22:10

Solo driving or walking.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 02/07/2022 22:11

I listen while I'm playing a mindless game on iPad or I listen to old favourites when I'm going to sleep.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 02/07/2022 22:12

I listen whilst at work, when walking, during travelling from a-b, doing housework, crafting. Anywhere where you could also listen to music or a podcast.

pandora206 · 02/07/2022 22:16

I listen mostly when I'm doing something routine or boring, especially vacuuming and mowing the lawn which I hate. It really makes the time go quicker and the task less dull.

ApolloandDaphne · 02/07/2022 22:16

Mostly walking the dog, driving places, cooking and ironing.

dnokeh · 02/07/2022 22:17

I listen whilst doing mundane tasks, cleaning, laundry etc

rookiemere · 02/07/2022 22:18

Walking- either with or without the dog, or driving.
I do find it frustrating when I'm deep in a book I really enjoy as I don't really enjoy listening to Audible when in the house.

echt · 02/07/2022 22:20

Cooking, housework and driving.

bluedomino · 02/07/2022 22:21

Washing up, knitting, painting/decorating, driving, hanging the washing out, doing the food shop and waiting in the car for the kids whilst I play Freecell. I need sounds when going off to sleep. I have certain people who's voices I find really calming. I listen when I wake up in the night because of bloody insomnia. During the night I listen to try to stop my brain worrying. I do listen to BBC Sounds app too for shorter plays etc. Basically anytime I can't read my kindle or an actual book. BTW I get my audio books from the local library using their app as its free.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 02/07/2022 22:22

Walking, commuting, cooking, cleaning.

I also use audio books I've listened to lots of times to help me sleep.

Dilemmaemmaaa · 02/07/2022 22:22

I really got into one once but I was training for a marathon and had promised myself I wasn’t allowed to listen to it unless I was running. I remember it really making me desperate to go because I would feel like I’d let myself down if I was to chill listening to it in the bath or something 😂 the fact I was running also meant I couldn’t sit and pointlessly stare at my phone and get distracted from it. Driving is the only other time like that actually
