What exactly do you do with yourself when you're listening to an audible book?

Just that really.

I've always said I wouldn't do it because I'm not quite sure what you're supposed to do at the same time. Just lie there? Stare at something? Or maybe you listen when you're doing housework

Anyway, I've been swimming a lot these past few months and can listen to a podcast just fine but I'm considering a book. But what happens if I get into the book and want to listen at other times? I just sit there doing it?

Tell me when you listen and how you concentrate as I just know my mind would drift

Blimey, I'd never risk my AirPods in a pool. I do have swimming earphones which contain a little MP3 player and I listen to all manner of stuff on them, really makes the swim less dull. Think it would be tough to get audible on there though, I tend to make my own things to listen to.

OP, how do you listen to it when you're swimming? I like the sound of that!

OK - so it's not something you do when you're just sat on the sofa then. It's always puzzled me as I'm easily distracted.

I can see it would be useful to listen as you're doing housework or out walking

I do…just listen. I don’t really stare at anything or look at anything that I’m conscious of…I’m seeing things with my minds eye based on the narration. I’m fully immersed and imagination is going full belt.
But I grew up listening to a lot of radio in the 1960s…we didn’t have TV till I was 10, so that’s maybe why. I still listen to a lot of spoken word - probably as much as I watch tv

i Can’t actually listen while I’m concentrating on something else at all…but I do sometimes do a bit of crochet or embroidery where I am not actively concentrating on the task.

Cleaning, driving or if I know it'll get me off to sleep, I'll head to bed earlier than usual and listen, then I don't mind falling asleep a few chapters in.

I listen to audiobook/podcasts while cleaning, cooking and walking.

I use bone-conducting earphones so I’m still available for family to talk to or to hear traffic, it’s brilliant.
