Hi.
Im currently on holiday and we have a burglar alarm with cameras. Im worried sick because we have already been burgled once and they took a massive amount of 24 carat gold. I am of South Asian origin.

After the burglary, I installed alarms and cameras with ADT. I am currently on holiday and I am getting notifications and photos of someone on my property at midnight! The neighbours are so kind and patrol the garden with their dogs but the intruder is coming at night. Everything is secure but I am still scared and traumatised by the first burglary...is there anything I can do?

Has the intruder come more than once? Have you contacted the police?

KvotheTheBloodless · 02/07/2022 21:24

Call the police, obviously!

I presume you’ve put any valuables in a safety deposit box at the bank this time? But yes, call the police!

Isaidnoalready · 02/07/2022 21:26

What is the alarm company supposed to do anything or nothing?

Have you not notified the police?

To be an intruder they need to intrude? Which is illegal?

Scaredandabroad · 02/07/2022 21:28

No I havent called the police..

Well the intruder is … intruding. Surely that’s enough to call the police?

maryberryslayers · 02/07/2022 21:28

Err call the police

chiffchaffchiff · 02/07/2022 21:28

Do you mean on property as in stalking the front garden looking for a way in?

Natsku · 02/07/2022 21:30

Scaredandabroad · 02/07/2022 21:28

No I havent called the police..

So is the intruder in the garden but not the house yet?

Scaredandabroad · 02/07/2022 21:33

Our house is a detached cottage. The garden goes all the way around it. We cant hear the neighbours and ghey cannot hear us. We are in the countryside. The inturder was in the garden NOT in the house.

If you think a crime is in progress call the police. An intruder on your property would count as this. The police might be quite up for going round as it could be they are after these people as part of a bigger operation.

Does anyone back home/neighbour etc have a key and could go in and get your gold and take it to a safe at a bank in the morning?

Unfortunately I don't think you keeping the gold at your house is a good idea longer term, did the police or your insurer offer any advice after the last burglary?

TokyoTen · 02/07/2022 21:36

I'd definitely call the police - and save all evidence!

BlueThursday · 02/07/2022 21:39

Btw you can’t just rock up to a bank with your valuables and ask for a safety deposit box

Scaredandabroad · 02/07/2022 21:41

No gold in the house- its all gone and there are no valuables in the house. The car is parked in the driveway and the kind neighbours keep an eye out in the day time for suspicious behaviour. We were burgled at 10am last time.

I was asleep when I got the notification from ADT. It only happened once on Friday but it sickens me to know that there was someone on my property at midnight skulking around. My brother went to check it out the next day and everything was secure....

Haha I didn't mean literally pop to your local branch of HSBC dripping in gold and ask them to put it in their safe. I meant make the necessary arrangements with a suitable service.

PAFMO · 02/07/2022 21:41

You said midnight so yesterday? Last night?

Jalepenojello · 02/07/2022 21:42

Can you turn on live notifications? And call the police ASAP when you are alerted. They are still trespassing and will not have good intentions. They can still be arrested, especially if they are planning on breaking in they will have tools to assist them that the police are wise to.

SouthOfFrance · 02/07/2022 21:43

Ah good there isn't anything on the property. Definitely call the cops if they come back, even if they are only in your garden.

Scaredandabroad · 02/07/2022 21:47

Thank you everyone for taking the time to write. I will contact the police and ADT.

Bloody burglars- they've taken precious family heirlooms. There is nothing left- feel like putting a big sign outside saying No Indian gold here. We are the only Asian family in our tiny village so I feel even more upset that we were watched and targetted. Our HSBC branch stopped doing safe deposit boxes 10 years ago...its no excuse. Its because I kept my gold in the house that it is gone.

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 02/07/2022 21:57

Someone you know probably robbd you.
Otherwise how would they know you keep that much gold at home?
FYI - I'm Asian too

vipersnest1 · 02/07/2022 22:06

OP, you could buy a safe (I have a gun safe from when I used to shoot target pistol) and install it in a wardrobe or similar, if that would reassure you, and give you somewhere to put valuables when you are away from home.

SouthOfFrance · 02/07/2022 22:11

Unfortunately Asian households are targets for gold theft, its not true that it has to be someone the Op knows.
