OK, so send old mascara wands to hedgehog rescues - what else?

ChinBristles · 02/07/2022 16:03

On the thread re leaving water out for hedgehogs, a poster said to send old, clean mascara wands to hedgehog rescue centres as they use them to groom the hedgehogs.

I already donate old pillows and blankets (but not sheets or duvets) to my local cat rescue.

I'm aware you can donate used glasses to opticians and bras to charity shops for them to send abroad.

Are there any other wee things like this that we can all be doing? Either with used items or just other small useful, charitable gestures.

Thanks!

Our local hedgehog rescue place has asked people NOT to send mascara wands.

LadyHelenaJustina · 02/07/2022 16:32

(I’m not sure why, but it’s worth checking before you send them)

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 02/07/2022 16:52

I believe that Superdrug are taking empty drug blister packs.

chipsandpeas · 02/07/2022 17:02

where can you send old glasses to? i asked in specsavers but they told me nowhere was taking them just now i have about 6 pairs of old glasses i need to get rid off and would rather donate them somewhere

Pansypotter123 · 02/07/2022 17:04

@chipsandpeas my church used to collect unused spectacles and they were sent to an overseas charity to be used again. That stopped during Covid. Worth checking locally though?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 02/07/2022 17:10

Do they use them to try and get the fleas out? I’m not a great fan of hedgehogs , we were persuaded to ‘care for’ a rescued couple which bit DH as he went to feed it.
The badger loves them though.

Boots have a recycling scheme for hard to recycle cosmetic packaging, it recently got rolled out more widely:

My big sainsburys now has a recycle bin for all cosmetics packaging. Certain Maybelline locations will also accept any brand’s packaging. (Actually I think my sainsburys scheme is the Maybelline one.)

There’s loads here: www.elle.com/uk/beauty/g34156578/makeup-recycling/

But are you talking about sustainability or useful things to benefit people (and hedgehogs)?

Anyone take in awful teens?

I’d take them of your hands for a couple of hours, but as that’s unlikely to be practical have BrewCakeGin

ChinBristles · 02/07/2022 18:52

Yeah, it's not so much the "recycling, save the planet" aspect I'm thinking of, more the "what simple thing can I do to help people and animals". (Although obvs helping the planet helps us all!)

Most local wildlife hospitals have a Amazon wish list that you can have a look at and buy something in your price range, share this with your friends. Buying a bag of wax worms really helps.

Support their open days.

Make you garden wildlife friendly and try initiatives in your local area, such as hedgehog highways

Baby hedgehog I was feeding the other day for attention!

We’ve taken old duvets to a Dogs’ Trust centre - they certainly used to welcome them, don’t know whether they still do.

As long as they aren't feather duvets. As the staff explained, you can imagine the mess if a dog ripped open a feather duvet or pillow!

But old towels, blankets, non-feather duvets are usually welcome.

Some rescues take furs (if you inherit your great-aunt's genuine rabbit fur stole or whatever, but don't want it) to comfort very young baby animals without a parent to cuddle up to.

You and your husband sound like a pair of numpties. He obviously did something stupid that the poor hedgehog felt threatened by. I have a lot of experience caring for hedgehogs and they are adorable, gentle creatures. Hope your badger bites you on your arse.

SeaStatePhenomenal · 02/07/2022 21:24

@1nsertusername how gorgeous is that baby hedgehog 🦔. Just adorable. Love them 💕

ChinBristles · 02/07/2022 21:57

The cat rescue near me DOESN'T want duvets. Not sure why. Mind you, I recently invested in some wool duvets which will apparently last me the rest of my life!

What crawled up your crack and died?! What a weirdly aggressive and horrible post.

Probably because badgers eat hedgehogs

Freemc2 · 03/07/2022 00:30

Many rescues will also take old clothes and shoes to sell to the rag man. Obviously good items will be sold in the charity shops, but unsaleable can often still be used to make money.
Towels of all states are also useful, some will cut them up for cleaning, or use for bedding.
Newspapers also seem to be frequently requested

SeaStatePhenomenal · 03/07/2022 07:04

Thank you for explaining @iRun2eatCake . hopefully some intelligence will crawl up @Greensleeves arse - highly doubt it though. Clearly a total moron

SeaStatePhenomenal · 03/07/2022 07:06

Sincerely hoping a big fat badger bites @Greensleeves on her stupid arse as well!
