Where to buy good quality sofas

We are currently extending our house and need an extra large sofa to go in the extension. I am being bombarded with adverts from companies like Swoon Editions and Arlo & Jacob but their trust pilot reviews are quite poor, particularly in relation to quality. I know people are more likely to leave a poor review because they are annoyed but I'm still worried about spending up to £3k on something that turns out to be a load of rubbish.

Can you recommend a company that sells modern, attractive and, most importantly, good quality sofas?

Very happy with our Loaf sofa, it feels good quality but it’s less than a year old so can’t comment on durability.

Stringervest · 02/07/2022 07:13

That's interesting to hear @Haus1234. Someone commented online about Loaf sofas that they tend to look messy unless carefully "made". This concerned me as we have two young kids who climb all over everything.

I think they look really comfy so I'm quite interested in buying one of them.

Love our sofa.com sofas. We bought our first ones about seven years ago and they're still great.

Loaf 🥰

Nearlyadoctor · 02/07/2022 08:07

Parker Knoll excellent quality and British made

honeyandbutterontoast · 02/07/2022 08:16

Our loaf sofa is 4 years old now and still looks as good as the day we bought it. It has had all kind of things spilt on it but everything has just wiped off (puppy peed on it the day we got it for example 🙄). It is a more rigid style one though, so doesn’t look messy.

JuneOsborne · 02/07/2022 08:17

I want a maker&son sofa. They look amazing.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 02/07/2022 08:20

Heal’s, John Lewis, Parker Knoll, Ercol.

Or get something old/vintage and have it frame repaired/reupholstered/recovered.

Next, Heals, JL

Fairnair · 02/07/2022 09:03

Next is pretty good, usually have a wide range, different price points etc. We had two 2 seater sofas (larger type which sat three people) from 2007 to 2019. Realistically “needed” to be replaced about a year before we eventually did).

We replaced end of November 2019 with one large sofa (big enough for me to stretch out on, I am only 5ft 2, but the previous ones were not big enough), & a cuddle chair (bigger than a standard chair). We are really pleased with them.

Haus1234 · 02/07/2022 09:05

They have a lot of different styles - we have one with a chesterfield style solid back so it doesn’t look messy, but ones which are made of cushions probably do a bit more. They are wide and much better to lie on than other sofas we looked at!

Stringervest · 02/07/2022 09:25

Thanks for the tips, please keep coming. There are some I hadn't thought of here.

We have two Next sofas which we bought in 2014 and still look great. The problem I have with some of the more reliable brands is that they don't necessarily do the most modern designs.

Not sofology!!!! Paid near 5K for my sofa

The forgot to put the leg underneath so it bent, colour was different slightly to what we picked, buttons fell out and all the leather has already worn! Only just a year old, had our last sofa for 6 years- was a lazy boy and didn't have a mark on it SIL still has it an it's the most padded sofa ever am still looks like new

Annoying

Do NOT buy from SCS. The sofa you try in the showroom isn’t the same as what gets delivered, there’s shoddy workmanship, and when you have evidence it’s been made incorrectly and but are poking out, they tell you that ‘comfort is subjective’.
Hope you find something soon!

Stringervest · 02/07/2022 09:36

@FartNRoses thank you for this!!

Sorry some of you have had bad experiences. I'm willing to take a chance on an eg £100 light fitting from a brand I don't know but thousands on a sofa that lasts five minutes is a big no.

The one thing I will say about Loaf sofas is that they look very untidy/worn after not long.

We have an 8yo sofa.com linen 4 seater chaise that’s in great condition. We likewise need to spend money on new large sofas & I’m leaning towards them again.

Camerich are amazing but £££.

Cookiedough41 · 02/07/2022 09:50

Can't believe no one has said Tetrad yet.
British made - have an outlet page on Facebook but also available to look in their factory in Yorkshire.
Love mine- so does the dog!

EinsteinaGogo · 02/07/2022 09:50

We had Multiyork for years and years which were excellent.

We are a bit stuck too now they're not around.

We tried to get 2 chesterfields from #OakFurnitureland as a replacement - waited for 7 months, lots of promises and finally a cancellation, so I would suggest avoiding them.

We are now looking at Old Boot Sofas.com - they look good but we don't have a sofa from them to certify quality yet.

dolphinsarentcommon · 02/07/2022 09:51

Sofology are rubbish. 18 months old and a v expensive leather one needs replacing. Leather is ok... has sagged so much though I'm almost on the floor..

WhatsHoppening · 02/07/2022 09:55

We have a loaf sofa and it’s amazing. It’s a scatter back so does need to be plumped and ‘made’ to look smart but for how comfy it is I don’t mind. It’s really resistant to stains and marks and a real statement. It also looks as expensive as it was!

Throwawaytoday · 02/07/2022 09:58

We have two sofa.com sofas. The Margot (I think the exact model is discontinued).

Loveseat in oatmeal- in good condition after 12 years, no sagging, slightly bumpy looking seat cushion.

2.5 seater in teal - 10 years old, still looks pretty smart, but atrting to feel a bit saggy. Probably consider a new one when we move house.

They also have removable and machine washable seat covers which makes a difference.

Easy to buy, good delivery service. We bought them blind (we don't live near a showroom) and they've been good and comfy.

alwaysmovingforwards · 02/07/2022 09:58

I got a DFS one during lockdown so could test it...
The quality is good insomuch as it looks like new.
But my god it's just so uncomfortable!
Probably looks new because nobody bloody uses it!
Will be on eBay soon I reckon!! 😆
