Anyone else dealing with upset teenagers after Technoblades

Tr1skel1on · 01/07/2022 21:21

Technoblade was almost part of our family during Covid lockdowns, it was where my 2 teenagers hung out, online, with their peers, so important. They are both absolutely devastated, and to be honest I shed a few tears too, only just 23

We are upset in our house too.
His poor dad. I don't know how he got through making the video.

bringon2020 · 02/07/2022 00:21

Mine are 9 and 12 and they were both sad. Youngest one was crying. It's weird to see them dealing with grief like that, but the guy was 23. I could only think about his parents...

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 02/07/2022 00:22

Yes dd has been very sad today.

DD12 is absolutely devastated - she was distraught when I got up this morning.

I managed to put my foot in it as well as I was half asleep and had no idea about the back story, so asked her if she was absolutely sure it wasn't a hoax.

I was very tempted to ask my DS the same question.

I was thankful I’d resisted the urge once I’d looked at the BBC news.

DS was really upset today and burst into tears a couple of times. He’s been completely obsessed with minecraft for years.

When I watched the father’s video I was surprised at how, I dunno, media savvy and, well, staged it seemed. An empty white room, careful lighting, the long shot of the dog trotting over at the start. It wasn’t what I was expecting somehow.

I hope everyone’s kids are feeling better tomorrow.

My son is very sad but decided not to watch the video as he knew it would be too much for him so we'll probably watch it together tomorrow but i know we'll both be crying. So very sad.

Re: the video, I suspect that Techno has been planning it for a good while - I know he was planning to narrate it himself before he became too unwell - and it has been a family effort to make this final goodbye come together for him.

Bugger, I'm crying again.

If you were in any type of caring profession I would be ashamed of your lack of empathetic skills @ThePumpkinPatch

You've totally misunderstood my post! I've shown empathy towards the poor boy who died. That's awful. I'm simply saying that some of the examples on here of kid's reactions are ridiculously OTT and worryingly so. You need to remember that as awful as this boy's passing is, ultimately these kids never met him, didn't know him personally and simply watched his videos...
I was upset when someone famous died but had I been "randomly bursting into tears" etc, I'd have had people on here calling me unhinged & much worse. Followed by questions about my mental health.

Allowing your kids to spend so much time in front of a screen that they go wayyyy beyond normal levels of empathic upset when someone they follow tragically passes; So much so that they become so emotionally enmeshed in that person that upon them sadly passing away, they're randomly bursting into tears, then you've reached a point where you need to intervene and have them take a step back.
Being this devastated over someone you've never met and do not know is not healthy, whichever way you try to frame it.

But of course in true MN fashion, you've twisted my words to fit your own narrative that I "don't care that a boy has died" Confused

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/07/2022 23:37

People cried when Elvis died.
They cried when Freddie Mercury died.
And when Robbie Williams left Take That in the 90s.
When Princess Diana died.

A long time before screen time was a thing.🙄 You gave your professional opinion as a bus driver/engineer/cleaner/whatever, on a thread where you didn't know the subject matter or the parents or the children. And that professional opinionHmm was cunty as fuck.

Lessstressedhemum · 03/07/2022 18:32

If you're talking about my son, he has ASD and struggles with his emotions. It's nothing to do with screen time nor does it need any kind of "intervention" from me other than to help him manage his feelings. He is also 19 and sets his own limits with screens etc.

My son felt a connection with Alex. Watching his videos helped him get through him through a difficult couple of years. I cried when David Bowie died and when Prince passed away. How is this any different?

Nacknick · 03/07/2022 18:57

DS12 very upset about it too. He went off to school with tissues and trying not to cry. Came into my bed at bed time and sobbed 😭

Exactly

motherofawhirlwind · 03/07/2022 19:22

My 15 yo was devastated. Already having a tough week and this finished her off. We've ordered a hoodie for her, especially as the proceeds are now going to charity.

savehannah · 04/07/2022 09:36

@ThePumpkinPatch I don't think you understand the world these teens live in. Following someone on Youtube or Twitch when you are hearing them talk live in real time, and where you are participating in a 'conversation' with them via the chat function is very different to a pop star or movie star, and as said by others, people get very upset even when those die.
I don't think it's unreasonable that teens feel devastated about this young man's death.

lolil · 04/07/2022 09:46

12 year old DD (also autistic) is really struggling with this. She isn't a talker and gets angry when I try to discuss things, anything, that she isn't ok with. This has really hit her hard. So so tragic Sad

lolil · 04/07/2022 09:47

@ThePumpkinPatch

You have read the room badly, instead of slating peoples parenting in your defence how about you realise you have erred and back off?

HoppingPavlova · 04/07/2022 10:17

Dont be ridiculous. It’s got nothing to do with screens, it’s just about the human feeling of connection. I was a huge David Bowie fan when young, went to his concerts etc. Have always enjoyed his music and connected his music to much of my youth. I burst out crying when I heard he had died and was teary for a week, and still feel sad if I think about it. I have had a full life, am not some whacko stalker, wasn’t a groupie who slept with him (more’s they pity). But I had a very emotional reaction as felt a connection to him through his music.

Same with Rik Mayall. I’m the same age and in some ways ‘lived through him’ while doing my own straight laced professional job. I was gutted when he died, was upset for days and cracked a bottle in his honour.

This person is the same for young people of today. Someone that they have felt a connection with and they are hurting at present. It’s not hard to understand surely?
