Daughter's spot squeezing!

Moonriver22 · 29/06/2022 08:58

Can anyone give me any advice to get my daughter to stop messing up her face? She keeps disappearing into the bathroom for ages and reappearing with red botches all over her face. She looked terrible going to school this morning and it was so unnecessary. I used to do it and it borders on self abuse. Almost like a release. I feel that I'm on her case enough with homework, screen time etc without keeping tabs on her bathroom usage too. She's 14 and has just started doing this. I'd really like to nip it in the bud. If anyone has any advice I'd be really grateful. Thanks

Does she have cleansing products? Could you teach her the art of skincare?

I'd leave it. As PP said make sure she's got decent skincare and a concealer stick but otherwise leave it be. Teens squeeze spots, it's not messing up her face permenantly and the red marks fade away.

HSKAT · 29/06/2022 09:10

They always look red and angry after you've tried to pop them etc it does go away.

Make sure she has the right skincare.

She's going to pick no matter what so I wouldn't make a big deal of it.

CrikeyAlmightyOk · 29/06/2022 09:10

Trinny Woodall does some good videos online about teenage spots and what products to get. She also does one on spot squeezing including how and when to do it so it doesn't leave any scarring.

Moonriver22 · 29/06/2022 09:12

Thanks everyone. We had a massive push on skincare about a year ago. Might need a refresh. Im sure you're all right - I'm probably over thinking it and all teens do it.

Leave her alone. If she is using it in the way you did, which tbh is unlikely as squeezing spots is quite normal for a teen, but if she is, more pressure will only push her further. Maybe she does need a release, you have the power to give her that.

DanteThunderstone · 29/06/2022 09:15

Butting in to ask what are the best skincare products/regimes for spotty teenage skin please.

A massive punch on skincare for a 13 year old?

Please, give her a break. No refresh. She needs you to back off. You sound horribly intense.

Is her acne actually quite bad? If so take her to the GP and get her some prescription stuff. My daughter had to go on roaccutane aged 15 and it was the best thing she ever did - hardly any side effects despite the many horror stories and cleared it all up. Obviously there are less harsh prescription things to try first. If she’s spending that much time squeezing and worrying about it it must be really bothering her.

Moonriver22 · 29/06/2022 09:20

We had a push because she was upset because she was breaking out and needed to find something for her sensitive skin. We tried all sorts like Cerave and ended up with Simple. Hardly a bad thing!

She was really upset going to school today because the concealer wasn't enough to cover it. But I will back off and leave her to the squeezing but look again at skincare.

Thanks. She has epiduo which was fabulous at first but the breakouts seem to have come back. Maybe she needs something stronger but I'll probably try a fresh Epiduo first. If not then something stronger. Thank you.

Have you got spot stickers? I use them all the time when I'm at home and overnight. They're better for spots with a head but I use them on deep cystic spots too because it stops me making them worse by touching my face all the time.

violetbunny · 29/06/2022 09:27

If her spots can't be managed, please take her to the GP. Acne can often be pretty straightforward to treat. No point her suffering when treatment is available.

I was also going to suggest this. DD is a skin picker and puts these on at home/overnight just so that she can't pick.

Sorry OP. That's not what I thought you meant at all by a 'big push' - finding something for sensitive skin isn't what I would consider a big push at all. I misread you completely.

Candleabra · 29/06/2022 09:35

Isn’t it normal to squeeze spots? Unless she has bad acne that needs medical help I would leave her alone, she probably feels self conscious enough without you pointing it out.
It isn’t the same as self harm. There’s a purpose to squeezing spots.

LiarActressGoTheFuckOut · 29/06/2022 09:41

Take her to the GP. There’s lots of treatment options. Our GP was very helpful and said there’s absolutely no reason for teens to have to put up with acne now. My son tried a few things with varying results before having a course of roaccutane.

westendgirl780 · 29/06/2022 09:45

Agree with a trip to the GP, la Roche posay effaclar range also worth looking into. If she is going to squeeze (which is nigh impossible to resist) maybe better with a proper extractor tool like the one tweezerman sell?

Lellochip · 29/06/2022 09:47

How is her skin when she's not messing with it? I'm all for getting acne treated properly but if she's only getting one or 2 normal teenage pimples I wouldn't rush to medicate for that. It sounds like it's the skin picking that's more the issue now?

steppemum · 29/06/2022 09:52

my 14 year old loves spot stickers, they hide them as well as stopping them pick.

It is worth talking about how poking red spots makes them worse, how you need to wait until there is a head etc.

Mariposista · 29/06/2022 10:06

I agree with the PP about going to see the GP. I tried to get through it with skincare products, creams, water, so much stuff, but ultimately acne was hormonal and needed treatment. Bad acne is devastating for teenagers’ self esteem and rarely ‘just gets better’. Nip it in the bud now.

snoochieboochies · 29/06/2022 10:15

get her Dermatica and explain to her it's a process and she could scar her skin with picking.

ChinBristles · 29/06/2022 10:21

I still fondly remember a spot I squeezed when I was 14. A huge boil it was on my top lip. Hit the mirror like a bullet out a gun. Twice in a row. The relief was amazing.

Years later I went on roaccutane. Best thing I ever did.
I recommend Dr Sam Bunting and Dr Dray youtube videos on skincare. And Dr Pimple Popper for the vicarious squeeze!

CandyLeBonBon · 29/06/2022 10:24

I used to self harm line this - I'd pick until things were a bloodied jelly mess - it was almost compulsive. Apart from homework, have you chatted to see if there's anything else going on? Insecurity and a general feeling of being unsafe? Bullying? Often it's not obvious what the cause is.

Moonriver22 · 29/06/2022 10:52

@CandyLeBonBon

I was the same! But I don't think she's at that stage. She has had some issues lately but I think they're under control.
