If you WFH how do you stay active?

Onlyrainbows · 27/06/2022 20:54

I WFH (and always have even pre -covid) but the biggest difference this time is that I have a toddler and expect to cover normal 9-5/6 hours. There's tons of flexibility in the sense that I can do yoga/HIIT/barre as long as I can go back to my laptop at any given time. I used to run, but obviously long distance running isn't compatible with this, plus it isn't the best option given my chronic anemia. I've noticed that I've gained 1st (or thereabouts) and losing it would take me back to my happy place. I currently do 30mins of dance cardio + 10 mins HIIT + 20mins yoga 5 times a week. That should be more than enough, right? On average I eat 1500 daily calories and also walk the dog, but apart from that I'm stuck sitting at my desk.

I would need to say you need to take an honest look at what you are eating and record it. If you are genuinely eating 1500 cals a day and burning 300ish 5x a week you should be losing weight. I'm around 12 stone, currently eating/exercising the same as you say you are and losing about 2lb a week. They say it's 80% what you eat and 20% what you do.

Get a standing desk. Game changer for posture and core

Doloresabernathy1 · 27/06/2022 21:11

What are you doing to treat your anemia?

You do more than I do and I WFH. TBH I have still been able to lose weight, but I focus on my diet.

I would definitely look into getting some iron tablets to sort your anaemia. I found out I was badly anaemic but i could feel it as i felt terrible. GP got me tablets and iv feel so much better. Apparently being anaemic stops you losing weight as well. Ive only been on my tablets 3 weeks but i can tell im losing weight now and not eating so much rubbish as i have energy to make healthier meals and eat healthier options.

Onlyrainbows · 27/06/2022 21:38

I have a rare genetic condition that means my anemia isn't treatable (only with iron infusions) - I've been referred to a clinical geneticist and will have to try experimental genetic therapy at the university hospital.

I've just started going back to my routine and having a much better look at what I eat. For example today I've had a wafer type biscuit (40 cals), one sweetcorn with light mayo, two slices of salami, 5-7 tortilla chips with two spoonfuls of hummus, maybe like 10 grapes and a salad consisting of tomatoes, one small ciabatta, basil, red onion and olives. Sometimes I do it more, but I like to count calories (more like being aware of them) for the whole week, so I can compensate on different days.

I know I gained this stone because I went back to hibernation mode once my iron was on the floor, I have a much better idea of how much my ferritin fluctuates, so at least I can act more pre-empitvely and the GPs are acting on it too!

How much do you weigh and how tall are you? Because pp is right, you're not eating a lot and burning a decent amount of calories. If you're already underweight or mid-BMI you'll find it more difficult to lose.

SweetPetrichor · 28/06/2022 20:26

I cycle in my lunch break. I can do 5 miles at a leisurely pace in 40 mins and it gives a nice break in the day as well.

Any recommendations please

Onlyrainbows · 28/06/2022 20:35

I weigh around 68kg and have a height of 159cm, my BMI is 27.5 or thereabouts and I'm a small size 10 (when I'm 60kg I'm a size 8, and when I'm 55 I'm a size 6).

What are your bust-waist-hip measurements?

Onlyrainbows · 28/06/2022 20:51

I haven't measured myself but my jeans size 26in still fit, Iast time I was this weight it was 70:95cm

Second this and if you have a spare £350 get a Walkingpad (foldable treadmill) or deskbike. I love mine and use them when watching tv, zoom calls I don’t need to be super focused for, cardio in the morning/evening when little one is sleeping.

Mum5net · 28/06/2022 20:58

Before I got my dog I used to hoola hoop.

lljkk · 28/06/2022 21:07

Hm. You're > 6 kg heavier & 5" shorter than me but the same or smaller measurements. Dunno how that happens. I wonder where the 6 kg went.

Onlyrainbows · 28/06/2022 21:31

I dunno, I've always been heavier than I look.

I honestly don't think exercise makes much difference except health wise obviously!
I went from doing nothing, and I mean nothing, to exercising 6 days a week (spin classes so hard exercise!)
Weight loss. None. Didn't change my diet

SummerL0ving · 28/06/2022 21:36

I walk the dog for an hour a day. Then rush around the house doing jobs whenever I can. I do about five exercise classes per week and usually some gym mixed in.

Sometimes I will find that I've hardly moved all day so I will go to the gym as soon as I finish working.

littlese · 28/06/2022 21:41

I have a standing desk and I also have a peloton bike
I try to get on it for 30-45 minutes for 3-4 dpw
It's helping me tone up but don't think it helps for weight loss
What I'm finding is making a difference is 16:8 fasts although I think I've hit a plateau recently 😢

MrsJBaptiste · 28/06/2022 22:26

I go to the gym every evening after work or run at 6am before I log on.

I also IF (and only eat between 11-7pm) and stick to 1500 calories a day. This keeps me consistently losing 1lb a week. Exercise is a must along for me with calories counting as I generally burn 700 calories per gym session so don't worry if I eat a few more at the weekends.

whatwotnot · 29/06/2022 06:49

I don't.

In the morning I think I'll go for a walk then end up spending more time in bed.

In the afternoon I think I'll go for a walk then end up with a coffee on the sofa.

In the evening I think I'll go for a walk then end up making dinner and having an early night.

I'm basically a sloth.

milkysmum · 29/06/2022 07:06

Is that a recent picture op? You look amazing, and don't look as though you need to lose wait at all.
I agree that some people weigh much heavier than they look. I'm taller ( 5ft 7) and lighter ( (9st2) which gives me a bmi of about 21. I think you look slimmer than me as my hips are really wide no matter how light I get.
My sister is same height, same size 10 clothes but wider shoulders and she weighs at least 2 1/2 stone more than me - you just can't see where that extra weight is though it's crazy.

Onlyrainbows · 29/06/2022 08:04

A sloth LOL. But yes that's a recent photo, I'll find one of my wedding (last year) as that's my target weight.

How are you getting the figures for the number of calories you burn? Some trackers are notoriously inaccurate - overestimating by up to 50%. Or calorie counting apps where you put in say, 30 mins of vigorous aerobics, overestimate too.

Also you need to be brutally honest about what you eat. It's easy (ask me!) to think you only ever eat a bit of salad and a handful of nuts every day, and then conveniently forget the bar of chocolate that was a treat after shopping or the fully loaded coffee and cake when out with friends, or finishing the toddler's cheese covered pasta.
