Comparing wool duvets - are they all basically the same?

Has anyone got or had more than one brand so you can make a direct comparison? I know Devon Duvets are lauded as being great, but what exactly makes them better than Wool Room? Or Baavet?

I'm getting a wool duvet to help with my peri-menopausal temperature swings and Dh's horrible night sweats. It's an expensive choice for my frugal nature to feel ok with, so I want to be sure I'm spending wisely, and I'm a chronic over-thinker.

I'm happy with my Baavet ones. But I say "ones" because for me anyway, you do still need a summer one and a winter one.

blueirises · 27/06/2022 21:20

I bought myself a wool duvet from the Wool Room, and from a temperature point of view it was great, but oh, the smell. Lanolin. I'm afraid I've put it away (with a view to having it dry-cleaned to see if it takes the smell away), and got cotton ones. You can wash them in the machine.

Brogues · 27/06/2022 21:24

I just went cheap and cheerful to try them out and ended up with Fogarty. I’d like to try a summer weight version next. I think if you already know you are hot sleepers I’d try a summer weight one first.

we Have a baavet one and I can’t say I’ve noticed a smell and I’ve a pretty good sense of smell.

We have the medium weight I think and use it all year round, I do tend to add a blanket in winter but we do have windows open (and a fan all year round…).

I”m not sure I wouldn’t prefer another good feather duvet though to be honest. It’s fine but not sure it’s amazing.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 27/06/2022 21:26

We all have Baavets.

My first purchase was for my old dog. Watching her nestle in after two minutes and proceed to have a very comfy sleep (she found it hard to get settled) for 5 hours was a treat.

I looked at their other products, bought a duvet. Bought them for the family. Just trying out the pillows now.

Love them.

ChinBristles · 27/06/2022 21:51

Mine definitely had a smell but I quite like it and it dissipates over time. Hang it outside for a bit.

ChinBristles · 27/06/2022 21:53

Yes, I have one of their pillow too. Had to take some of the wool out as it was too high for me. I put a silk pillowcase over it for antiageing purposes!

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/06/2022 21:53

Mine's from Devon Duvets. No smell and the covering isn't 'rustly' (a problem with some other makes I've encountered)

ChinBristles · 27/06/2022 21:54

Mine were rustly in the beginning but I've got used to it. Or it has decreased.
My "issue" is that the covers are all yellow so show through white bedding.

Laquila · 27/06/2022 21:58

My son has one (The Wool Room) and it's definitely made a difference for him at night - he was insanely sweaty before! It's very thin/flat though - I'm presuming they're all like that? I think it's medium-to-light weight.

Mine doesn't have that problem. Cover is off white.

Skinterior · 27/06/2022 22:15

Mines a wool room one and I haven't noticed a smell. You do have to launder them quite a bit to keep them nice and fluffy though. But that might be for all of them.

Gentleness · 27/06/2022 22:16

The colour of Baavet ones does put me off a bit - my next purchase will be a linen duvet cover and white would be so lovely.

I don't mind the smell of lanolin much, or rustling, but washability is a must. I think. I thought Woolroom were the cheapest until I noticed that only their middle range are machine washable, and there is quite a big price hike.

The kids have baavet. We have Woolroom as I wanted a washable one. We're all very happy with our duvets. It's luck as to whether they smell or not. DDs room smelled like a farm for months after we bought hers but none of the others had any noticeable smell (it didn't bother us as we live rurally and the air often smells 'farmy' anyway!

ChinBristles · 27/06/2022 22:27

Yeah mine specifically say not to wash them. But I'm quite grotty anyway so happy to obey that! I reckon having wool duvets will still be cheaper than throwing out and replacing a polyester duvet every few years. Which is cheaper than paying the laundrette to wash said polyester duvets!

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 27/06/2022 22:29

My Baavet doesn’t smell at all and is fab. My wool mattress from John Lewis still smells very sheepy and it’s 3 years old.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 27/06/2022 22:35

We all have different Baavets - my one is organic and it came with a white cover.

I didn’t really notice the cream ones showing through white bedding.

HardRockOwl · 27/06/2022 23:10

Would you consider a silk duvet? I always have one on the bed and it's really good for menopause type symptoms at night

supperlover · 27/06/2022 23:52

I had a different brand one years ago but ruined it by washing it. I now have Baavet ones on every bed and love them. I bought them reduced in their Bargain Box and only had very minor faults like a slight mark.

Gentleness · 28/06/2022 15:31

Thanks for your help everyone! I'm still vacillating....

Since first posting I convinced myself to go for the Woolroom washable ones but then realised they seem to be quite a deep cream, similar to the Baavet in colour, and their weight categories are a bit frustrating for someone looking for something about 5-6 tog!

Then I convinced myself to go for Baavet anyway as I may get one at Woolroom prices in the bargain box - then remembered they are not machine washable.

Is it really worth paying an extra £25 for Devon duvets? They don't seem to have any bundle deals or sales, and I was hoping that with the money put aside I'd get a pillow as well....

I'm confused by the Wool Room having ones that are washable and not. And the non-washable ones being SO cheap.

Baavet's website says to be suspicious of cheap products, esp washable ones as the wool may have been treated with chemicals/plastics.

ChinBristles · 28/06/2022 16:19

I've been impressed with Baavet's customer services.

I reckon unless the user is a REGULAR bedwetter/vomiter, don't worry about getting a machine washable one. Just spot clean or wash gently in the bath if ever required.

Dilbertian · 28/06/2022 16:23

Make sure you get a wool mattress cover/protector as well. No point getting a will duvet and then sleeping on sweaty polyester.

IIRC I got our wool mattress cover from John Lewis a few years ago. It's machine washable on a gentle/wool cycle. I wash it every summer and it line dries quickly on a sunny, breezy day. I really notice the difference if doesn't, and we have to sleep one night with just the sheet between us and the mattress.

Gentleness · 28/06/2022 22:18

Thanks, useful points.

I'm trying to be patient and not buy everything at once. We are planning to change the mattress when we move house in the next year, and wool will be involved somehow, depending on what is left in our furnishings fund after dealing with everything else! I'm loving the linen fitted sheet we have - that was what convinced me it was worth investing in our sleep.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/06/2022 22:22

We also have a medium weight Baavet. Sometimes add a blanket in the depths of winter and might only have a sheet in the height of summer, but for 50 weeks of tye year it’s perfect.
