Comparing wool duvets - are they all basically the same?

Has anyone got or had more than one brand so you can make a direct comparison? I know Devon Duvets are lauded as being great, but what exactly makes them better than Wool Room? Or Baavet?

I'm getting a wool duvet to help with my peri-menopausal temperature swings and Dh's horrible night sweats. It's an expensive choice for my frugal nature to feel ok with, so I want to be sure I'm spending wisely, and I'm a chronic over-thinker.

I'm confused by the Wool Room having ones that are washable and not. And the non-washable ones being SO cheap.

Baavet's website says to be suspicious of cheap products, esp washable ones as the wool may have been treated with chemicals/plastics.

Yes, I wondered about that. I assumed it was to do with the stitching, but found this on their site: "Hi, the Deluxe range is treated with Chlorine which is what makes it machine washable. This is double washed out and the remaining Chlorine left in the product is less than what you would find in 3/4 of a cup of tap water, these have been tested by Allergy UK and also have their seal of approval."

But then, Devon duvets are machine washable too and claim no chemicals have been used at all, so 😵. Bah.

I have a few Devon duvets , I can’t help with the other brands but I throw all of mine in the wash occasionally (no/low temperature, genital wash). Surely if it fits you can wash it? In the same way as a woollen jumper - ie very carefully

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 28/06/2022 22:39

@Slowgrowingelm very jealous you have the ability to do a genital wash.

must save a fortune in electricity.

Gentle. I don’t know where that came from!

Gentleness · 28/06/2022 23:07

I'm all for keeping things natural 😄

But I think I'll let the machine do the work!

I haven't washed mine. I do leave it outside in the sun to air it from time to time.

100% cotton sheets, pillow case, mattress protector and duvet cover.
3 tog duvet with 100% cotton cover, same for pillows.
Night sweats are a thing of the past.

We have a Devon Duvets All Seasons duvet which was a gift (albeit I did ask for a wool duvet, just didn't specify brand). I am so delighted with it! It has made a big difference to me in my peri-menopausal state & my husband (who is like a radiator at night) is also very pleased with it. As an all seasons duvet, it has two different weight duvets that can be put together - I have never needed to do this. I think the summer one is 3-4 tog & they also do a 1 tog one. I would buy this one if I had the funds as the 3-4 tog is still too thick when it is very warm.

Subsequently, I was also given a wool pillow, which I think was from the Wool Room. I have been less pleased with this. It needs plumping up continuously & is not as comfy as I hoped it would be. I also had to buy more wool to make it the depth I wanted.

Neither of them have had any sort of odour though.

And yes, I agree with @EntertainingandFactual, 100% cotton bedding helps too. I'm told bamboo bedding is really good but it's out of my budget unfortunately.

That should say 3tog duvet with 100% cotton cover AND filling!

EntertainingandFactual · 28/06/2022 23:45

Here’s a 4.5 tog one from JL

Product code: 60240901

Soft, lightweight and cool, with a 100% washed cotton filling, this duvet is ideal for summer. The 190 thread count cotton cover is naturally breathable, the box construction keeps filling evenly distributed.

Wool duvets are too heavy and smelly for me.

Cheap and cheerful Fogarty here. Love it and has definitely helped with night sweats. I’m not keen on overly soft “poofy” duvets and like its slightly firmer feel. Absolutely no smell.

Gentleness · 29/06/2022 12:07

I did look at Fogarty, but it seems that they've been bought out by Dunelm and the most recent reviews describe the duvets currently sold as being much thinner and lower quality.
