Does anyone else go through phases/ obsessions?

Current one is too outing to mention but past obsessions have been:

Jewellery making
Planning my wedding
Baby wearing (sorry) / slings
Tried going vegan for a while
Tried going sober
Dry slope skiing
Ice skating
Choir
Batch cooking/ slow cooking everything

They last about 2-3 months before I lose interest. No harm has been done but I do feel like a bit of a twat for being so consumed by things 😆 please tell me I'm not alone.

Nope. Mine are much more fleeting though, and usually involve artists.

I was obsessed with Glastonbury all weekend. A silly amount.

moved onto tennis now.

WingBingo · 27/06/2022 19:55

I was obsessed with running for a few years too.

swimming for a while, as well as mountain biking.

ZaraSizeMedium · 27/06/2022 20:00

My DH sort of does this, he gets really invested in something, buys all the best most expensive gear, and 6 months later (if that) he’s over it and it’s never heard or spoken of again.

Air fryer or stand up paddle board anyone?

gottaloveascamhun · 27/06/2022 20:06

Yeah I can feel thus current one waning. I'm about 2 months in. Not sure what the next one will be!

Yep, same here!

I love to have a project or a “thing” on the go, and usually become hugely obsessive about it before the interest peters out, then a new one takes over.

Sailing
Paintibg (pictures, not walls)
Running
Tapestry
Heritage tomatoes
Ponds & wetland habitats
Crochet
Learning obscure language
Bread making
White-water kayaking
Fermented foods
Poi
Homebrew

The list goes on (and on!). I’ve learned not to spend too much unless I can sell stuff on secondhand. I think most people are like this to an extent, and it makes me happy to have a passion (whilst it lasts), so I just go with it.

prettyteapotsplease · 27/06/2022 20:07

I'm taken up knitting again lately, so much so that my right upper arm has become very sore but I still pick up those needles every day. I've had to change the kettle round so I lift it with my left hand instead and also lifting heavy bags with RH painful too. Yet still I knit.

I think I can call that an obsession. Previously it has been patchwork, embroidery and dress-making. Or is it that we like to finish a project - to see it through to the end? Perhaps not, as there's always another project waiting.

OTOH at least we are productive, that's my excuse anyway.

I think its part of the joy of living.
I'd be sad not to get passionate about stuff and want to experience and try as much as possible.

This. I've always had something 'crafty' on the go and get such pleasure from it.

One bugbear was people who'd respond by saying something along the lines of 'oh but I just couldn't possibly find time to do that' in a slightly sanctimonious way (to my ears).

CampervanQueen · 27/06/2022 21:06

Yep, me too. I have worked my way through a range of activities/hobbies over the years. Whilst some have waned (bookbinding anyone?), I still horse-ride, run, knit and play an instrument in an orchestra regularly. @WobblyLondoner my response to that question is usually I don't waste hours watching shit television

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 27/06/2022 21:18

I do obsess about various hobbies - but in cycles. So I might spend winter crochet and knitting, and abandon gardening - inly
to switch them around late spring through summertime. Same with listening to music and performing music or binging on a tv series then switching to a month long book fest and then switching back again. Same hobbies just not all the hobbies all the time.

ShirleyJackson · 27/06/2022 21:21

Wreath-making was my low point. I actually inflicted them on people 😳

Also knitting, card-making, candle-making…

Every now and then, one sticks though. I’ve been writing, running, drawing, doing yoga and growing fruit and vegetables for years. So it’s worth trying things until you find your groove, IMO.

ShirleyJackson · 27/06/2022 21:22

Oh and open-water swimming. I’m trying paddle-boarding soon, so let’s see if that lasts.

Yorkshireteabags · 27/06/2022 21:24

Yes. I have ADHD

SignOnTheWindow · 27/06/2022 21:28

Ha, yes! I have a lifetime of intense, time-limited hobbies behind me

I have diagnoses of ADHD and ASD. Any of you lot too? Or is this a general human trait?

wibblewobbleball · 27/06/2022 21:29

I do. I have ADHD and it's a common symptom

MsOllie · 27/06/2022 21:30

Yep
Family tree was one for a while

I'm the same with food too, if I like something then I will eat it for lunch or tea every day. Feta salad was my lunch for about 3 months Grin

JazzyJelly · 27/06/2022 21:37

I think we're all just trying to find our 'thing'. Whatever it is, pass it on if you can.

jewishmum · 27/06/2022 21:39

It happens to me too but I'm autistic.

ShirleyJackson · 27/06/2022 21:40

I strongly suspect I have ADHD, but I’m not diagnosed.

PicniKTime · 27/06/2022 21:41

My obsessions are more like researching something. Going down Internet Rabbit Holes about a topic/person/event.

Usually crime related. Or Natural Disasters.
Or Recipes.

NippyWoowoo · 27/06/2022 21:41

ADHD 🙋🏽‍♀️ it's cost me a lot of money 😕

QuizzlyBears · 27/06/2022 21:47

Not me, but my ex. ADHD and a whole host of intense 2-3 month hobbies that took over our life. Cake decorating, photography, holiday planning, running….

Frolicinameadow · 27/06/2022 21:47

Yes! I also become obsessed with foods and eat them until I can’t bear them anymore. Same with music, movies, tv shows (I watched schitts creek entire series 6 times. Some episodes more than that).
I spent a year learning about WW1 & 2.

I never know what’s going to take my interest next.

KissThaRain · 27/06/2022 21:48

Oh yes

crocheting
cross stich
online scrabble
online dice - not for real money
obsess over men
binge watch series - last one a month ago was killing Eve - took 2 weeks to watch it all
binge watching Project Runway all series - did nothing on Sunday but watch and entire series of it

all the above usually for a few months at a time then it’s over

Joyfultoes · 27/06/2022 21:49

How can you be consumer/ obsessed by baby wearing? Did you wear random peoples babies?!
