Has the flight chaos put you off?

Just that really. A couple of friends have hard a horrendous time with flight cancellations and a friend is has currently sitting on a runway for three hours waiting for people to get through queues!
Have decided to give going abroad a miss and going to stay in the UK. I know the weather will be shit but I can't face the potential stress. Might be a breeze and go perfectly well but does not make it a fun run up to a holiday knowing I might be queuing or having flights cancelled or affected by strikes.
Has the current travel madness put you off?

Yes it has. Was thinking of going away in August but am now unwilling to book anything. Might see how it goes and what I can get at very short notice - but I might just not bother now.

I live in the flight path for Manchester airport. Been quiet lately. I'm booked for 15th July with jet2 so fingers crossed.

thefirstfortyeight · 27/06/2022 18:21

No! Went through Manchester airport last weekend and it was fine, been in April and May too.

Think Jet2 are the only ones without any probs!
I thought it was the media making a fuss but everyone I know who has travelled recently has run into problems!

Yes, flying in recent years has become an unpleasant experience, something to be endured. Its now not something I will tolerate. Holidays are expensive and should be enjoyable. I yearn for the days when baggage wasnt obsessively weighed and measured, people were seated together at no extra cost, food was provided and the whole experience was enjoyable!

tiggergoesbounce · 27/06/2022 18:29

We flew a couple of weeks ago and there was no fuss at all, really quick and easy.

Flying again in next school hols, not anticipating any problems.
Everyone we know has been fine

I read an article about this. How flying has changed! The fact you even have to book a seat next to the person you booked with.
Meals were part of the service. Changed a lot since budget airlines came about. I generally just hate hassle and queuing. My friend is in Amsterdam sat for three hours on a runway! Bonkers.

Our local airport got voted worse in the uk so may be this!

Nope. Have been away 3 times this year and had only minor problems.

Life is too fucking short to put it on hold. I’ve had a bellyful of that for the last 2 + years. No more

AnyFucker · 27/06/2022 18:34

Ryanair have been fantastic and Manchester airport was fine.

How do you know for sure the weather? Where are you going and when?

MintJulia · 27/06/2022 18:34

Yes. I'm not going near an airport this summer. In fact probably this year.

Spending hours queuing with a fractious teenager is not my (or his) idea of fun.

devonianBiatch · 27/06/2022 18:36

Went to Italy from Liverpool 3 weird ago and was fine. Going to Corfu from Manchester in 3 weeks and I'm sure it will be fine. Why would I worry about something that hasn't happened yet? Worst case scenario is it's cancelled. Our delayed. Hardly the end of the world!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 27/06/2022 18:40

I’m flying into Heathrow T2 on Sunday, from Canada. I’m a bit concerned by the news stories about a lack of baggage handlers and luggage piled everywhere.

Roselilly36 · 27/06/2022 18:40

Flying hasn’t been a pleasure for years, at the moment the stress would outweigh the benefit of a holiday for me personally. Just seems such a mess, I know a few people that haven’t gone on planned trips, absolute pain when you are waiting at the gate to be told their flights have been cancelled. I wouldn’t dream of booking at the moment, school hols coming up will put further pressure on airports/airlines. I hope people that have holidays booked manage to get away.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 27/06/2022 18:41

Yes. I had an opportunity to go somewhere very nice and stay with a friend for three weeks, only needing to play for flights, but I really cannot face it.

A580Hojas · 27/06/2022 18:45

Yes. I was looking for a last minute holiday in Europe and decided not to fly. So we're going to France on a ferry.

gingercat02 · 27/06/2022 18:46

Yep. We're going on the Ferry to the Netherlands

Andante57 · 27/06/2022 18:48

Yes. We were supposed to going to stay with friends in France but as there are airport horror stories in the paper every day, we are losing our nerve.

A580Hojas · 27/06/2022 18:48

My friend's flight from Lisbon was cancelled last week. Instead of flying in the late afternoon into City airport, near where she lives in London, she was put on a flight 6 hours later arriving at Luton in the middle of the night. So - could have been worse but what a pita for 3 nights away in Portugal.

Natsku · 27/06/2022 18:53

I'm dreading my flight home (visiting the UK at the moment) as it seems I booked our flight home on the first weekend of the school holidays.

Flying in was no problem though, no queues or chaos.

ManonDe · 27/06/2022 18:53

Yes. we wanted to go abroad for the first time since October 2019 to visit family. But I have a SN child and simply cannot risk any issues as it would be ridiculously traumatic for him.

Adding that conisderation into every other fucking shit storm that is our daily lives means we are not going anywhere - again- for 3 years.

Minibea · 27/06/2022 18:54

Yes absolutely. We were looking at booking a cheap(ish!) getaway in the summer but have instead decided on a UK getaway because we’ll be travelling with kids (1 and 5) and frankly I can’t face additional drama or delays on top of an already stressful experience. Plus the passport delay adds an extra layer of uncertainty on to the whole thing

Bonjovispjs · 27/06/2022 18:56

Yes, I'm glad I haven't got any flights booked, it may be fine for a lot of people, but I'm not willing to risk it.

MadMadMadamMim · 27/06/2022 18:57

Yes. I agree with @Acheyknees whole post, really. As I can't afford to fly first or business class I'm no longer prepared to put up with the hideous experience that 'summer holiday abroad' consists of as far as airlines are concerned.

Hours early for checking in beforehand. Queues. Heat/nowhere to sit/delays (generally at the return airport). Rip off prices for food/drink. Tiny cramped seats both in airport and on plane. Children shrieking/lack of parental control. Baggage handling.

The whole experience makes me shudder at the thought. I can't bear to spend thousands of pounds to be stressed and miserable - and I find that by the time I get home I hardly feel 'rested'. I'd rather not bother. Holidays now are really for the rich, as well. Or at least those who are prepared to spend a large % of their spare income on a 'holiday'.

I would struggle to come up with the money for a 'family' holiday - a minimum of 2 or 3,000 pounds in August I imagine. And I can think of many things I'd rather spend that money on.
