Dental Implant?

DentalDisaster · 27/06/2022 15:22

Does anyone have one? Did you previously have a bridge or a gap?
what sort of cost for one front tooth?

Bupa dental care website just says ‘ From ‘ £1995 so I know it is going to cost a LOT more.
I don’t have the money, can’t afford it but I can’t live with a missing front tooth! The bridge keeps failing and falling off and my confidence is crushed. Help!

I have one, it cost 3k including extraction and a temp bridge white it healed.
Best thing I ever did. Happy to answer any questions.

DentalDisaster · 27/06/2022 16:04

thanks for replying.

Well I won’t need the extraction so, thinking positively, I won’t have to pay for that Grin

Did they tell you how long it is expected to last? I’d hate to take out a loan and end up having to replace it in 6 years or something, someone mentioned in passing they’d been told 10 years but Google is saying 20-30.

was it really painful having the post screwed into your bone? How long did you have to wait before having it fitted after the post was fixed?

I has 2 for 4.5k, I’m so pleased with them.

Sorry ignore that about 6 months.

I would say shop around, mine was £1200 from a respected practice. If you can find an implant specialist they can sometimes be cheaper due to the volume they create and having a lab onsite who create them. Get 2-3 quotes if you can. Also apparently you can barter a bit with dentists, so a dentist told me! So maybe once you have the quote ask if they can give you a discount because of XXX / on a budget / lone parent. Or say you've been quoted XXX elsewhere and might they come down a bit.

catpoppet · 27/06/2022 16:15

Also BUPA is bound to cost more than average.

kateclarke · 27/06/2022 16:28

I was told it will last indefinitely. I had to wait 3 months between the implant and finishing it off.
It didn't hurt, I was told I could have sedation, but for an extra £500 I couldn't really afford it.

amusedbush · 27/06/2022 16:36

I recently had my first extraction - the third tooth from the back so it’s not really visible but the gap feels massive and eating is a pain. Apparently a single denture doesn’t work well on the lower jaw and I don’t want a bridge because I don’t want to sacrifice anything from the teeth either side.

My dentist said an implant would be the best option (shocker, I know!) and it would be £2500-3000. It would need to be a lot cheaper before I’d consider it and, after how traumatic being awake during the extraction was, they’d need to knock me out to fit it.

70kid · 27/06/2022 16:42

I’m about to have one
£60 for consultation
£500 for bone graft
£2500 for the implant
£100 for extraction ( already done )

Im so gutted I have never even had a bloody filing in my life and my teeth really are quite perfect 😂apart from one tiny little crooked one on the side they are nice and white and perfectly straight no gaps anywhere

non smoker drinker

my dentist is always amazed when I go for check ups that I don’t need a filling and I have all my original teeth

it’s a sign of me getting old 😂

I was told it should last indefinitely if I have regular check ups which I do anyway

70kid · 27/06/2022 16:44

Mine is at the upper back so not noticeable
but if you don’t get it done it can eventually cause a gap in your other teeth
I’ve seen a few people who couldn’t afford to get it done and a few years later have gaps

maddy68 · 27/06/2022 16:48

Mine cost €1600 in Spain

maddy68 · 27/06/2022 16:49

Totally painless. Takes ages to get completed though , x-rays , implant , healing time , impressions etc

Cloud16 · 27/06/2022 16:52

I love mine. 3k in total.

Where are you based? The practice I went to let me pay in instalments.

Tethersend01 · 27/06/2022 16:54

Hi OP
I need an implant due to one of my teeth being irreparably damaged during a filling.
ive had two quotes, BUPA which was circa 2.5k all in. Another practice quoted 3.5-4 dependent on whether I needed a bone graft. Its sounds a lot but given the number of appointments needed, the training skill to do it and the fact its a surgical proceedure I feel its well worth it.
lifespan wise- it depends hugely on how well you look after your teeth generally. Implants don’t rot but they can be lost due to gum disease and bone loss. Smokers are much more prone to losing them I believe.
if you look after them well I’ve been told you could keep them a lifetime.

Ladypeg · 27/06/2022 16:58

I travelled to Brighton for mine as it was much cheaper than the dentists near to me. It was under £2000 in total, maybe around £1600? It’s done in phases too so you paid for it as each part was done over the course of a few months. I had a consultation and scan to check the bone was ok without a graft, then the screw was inserted at the next appointment then a couple of months later the tooth was screwed in. I had to put it on a card but it was worth every penny, no more hiding my mouth behind my hand every time I smile! I think it was called Brighton dental implant clinic and they had a couple of branches. It was worth the 3 round trips and £40/£50 petrol to save as much as I did. Would recommend them if they’re close enough for you.

sunshinesupermum · 27/06/2022 17:01

I have had one done some years ago which was £2K and am in the process of having another £3K (put on interest free credit card to pay off over 2 years which worked out cheaper than a loan.) No pain AT ALL.

DentalDisaster · 27/06/2022 17:10

I’m so gutted, it was failed root canal treatment that caused the tooth needing to be removed. The bridge has never looked quite right but now just won’t stay fixed. I think the problem is I’m a grinder. I wonder if that will also cause an issue with an implant? My dentist was really moody with me when he last re fitted the bridge because I complained there was a big -and I mean massive-gap at the gum line. I now can’t get an appointment to get it re attached for weeks and I don’t feel I can ask him any advice when I do because of how he was last time. I can’t move though, I’ll never get another NHS dentist to take me on, they are all going private!

of course Bupa will be more expensive! stupidly that didn’t occur to me. I will Google a few others, I’m just wary of ending up unhappy and there not being a second dentist at the practice to sort.

thanks all for the info. There seems to be quite a variable price range though so I’m going to have to contact a few in my areas to see what the average is around here. There also seems to be variable timeline of completion. I won’t be paying for sedation so will have to just get on with it. Anything to make it cheaper!

thank you for all the info

If you lost the tooth a while ago then it is likely you've lost bone and could well need bone graft for the implant to take, so might need to consider that in terms of cost but also the time the process will take.

I had one about 9 months ago and it's great, I do recommend if affordable. Process was way less painful than expected but lots of appointments to bear that in mind if you're travelling for it.

TeenyQueen · 27/06/2022 17:18

My hubby does them and he's got a great success rate. If you're thinking of having one it's probably better to have one sooner rather than later because you start losing bone once you've lost a tooth, and you need sufficient bone for the implant to work. If you haven't got sufficient bone you can sometimes have a guided bone regeneration or a bone craft, but that will make the treatment longer and more expensive. You should expect to pay around £2,5 k all in all for a single implant. It's a big lump sum but it will work out as being cheaper than having to get new bridges redone every couple of years. Many dentists offer payment plans or facilitate affordable loans for treatment.

nokitchen · 27/06/2022 17:19

Brighton implant centre are brilliant if within travelling distance for you, My husband has had several done there.

TheCanyon · 27/06/2022 17:25

Mine is a front upper tooth. Cost just under 3k but I also had whitening, ct scan, bone graft and a bit of composit bonding on the other front tooth to even them up. I paid mine in installments.

It was the least painful dental thing ever, lovely numbing gel so didn't even feel the needles. Just very boring, they take the drilling VERY slowly. With a front tooth though you can sit with your mouth mostly closed so no sore jaw thankfully.

One thing though, my electric toothbrush vibrates it and makes me feel like sneezing when I brush that tooth 😂

Biffatcrafts · 27/06/2022 17:34

I recently had 2 done (bottom right, 1st and 2nd pre-molar, side by side) as I had cracked a couple of teeth in an accident and they couldn't be saved. I paid just a little over £3000 for the 2 teeth to be extracted, the whole process of having the implants themselves (but I didn't need a bone graft luckily). Plus they did a full clean and whitening treatment too within that price, matching the implants to my now-whiter and clean teeth. I thought it was pretty good value. I'm told they should last at least 15 years with sensible care, plus the implants have a 10 year guarantee.

Well worth doing if you can afford it although it does take many months and many visits. Luckily my dentist does 0% finance over 12 months so you can spread the cost.

PerfectlyQuiet · 27/06/2022 17:39

I had two at great expense (but can't remember how much) about a year or so again and it looks like one is failing so I've now got to pay at least another £2000 odd to have the area cleaned out with zero guarantees that it will save the implant.

I had bone put in when I had it done and a sinus lift and I was told it looked very good.

Apparently the failure rate is 5-10%. You would think if it was lower then dentists would offer to cover the costs of failed implants but they don't, presumably, because the risk of failure is too high.
My dental hygiene is impeccable. The dentists says there is nothing I could have done differently to prevent it from failing.

Biffatcrafts · 27/06/2022 17:43

Should add, I am in Spain, Cataluña. The cost was €3495, which equated to about £3000 with the exchange rate at the time - €1.17 = £1.00.

TheBestSpoon · 27/06/2022 17:44

I had a front tooth done 15 years ago and it's still going strong! Can't remember how much it cost, but it was so long ago it wouldn't be relevant anyway. It was a faff to get done but not particularly painful and it's not given me any problems since.
