Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

Thing is, I don't believe in ghosts at all, but I fucking love a good ghost story.

And I think the sentiment behind 'I love a good woo thread' is probably centuries, even millenia, old, and that's utterly fascinating to me. People love being spooked. It's part of human nature to be drawn towards things we can't quite explain. And it's such a shame when posters pounce on these threads - as they always, without exception do - to tell us all off for being such sillies.

Anyway. I guess we'll go through all this all over again when the next woo thread rolls around. See you all again then Grin

Yes, me too. I don't believe in ghosts, the after-life, gods, mediums, horoscopes or any of that stuff. However, I love hearing people's ghost stories, will quite happily read all about what a scorpio is supposed to be like in relationships, and have freaked out at a ouiji board on more than one occasion.

I don't think it's as clear cut as full-on believers/non-believers. There's a whole lot of people who don't really believe in any of it, but sort of wish it was real, or are intrigued, or have had something weird happen that they will recount... even if they don't actually believe it was something supernatural, there's a little part of them that will retell the story when spooky things come up because it was unsettling, or weird, or just funny!

If this thread was someone trying to tell us she definitely had proof of it and everyone who doesn't believe is wrong, then i would be scoffing, but it's not - it's a spooky story which you can still enjoy without having to become a full blown believer.

youboozeyoulose · 30/06/2022 18:54

The thread was genuinely a bit of fun, I had a good laugh at the cheese stuff and smelly ghost, it's been ruined. People chip in with things that are clearly not in the tone of the thread, then if it's suggested they are on the wrong thread for them they say something really original like, "who are you, the thread police?".

Why not just be sensible and go and start a thread of your own about your thoughts than ruin an existing one. So much faux naivety, "but it's a debate". Nah you just like spoiling things for people. Feel sorry for the OP who I'm sure was only wanting to have a bit of fun.

Is it South West France? I stayed in a genuinely frightening place near Carcassonne some years ago.

What happened..? 👻

BeanyBops · 30/06/2022 20:11

I was really enjoying this thread but I guess I'll go comment on a thread about football. I don't like it, so they shouldn't either. I must let them know.

The Vatican thing makes me laugh, religions usually have the most fantastical stories associated with them Grin

It's been about six hours since any of us posted on it. It's been mostly whining since then.

If you're so into the activity of the dead, just revive the fucker.

It’s quite possible to ignore them and keep posting you know.

Erm, nah it wasn't. The self-righteous posting was deafening.

Dummycrusher · 30/06/2022 21:35

@FootontheHeartbreak @ReneBumsWombats why on earth would anyone share anything now and open themselves up to all the mockery and nitpicking from you lot? So bloody boring!

And yet now that we’re ignoring the thread you specifically tag to call us back to it. I didn’t kill the thread at all. I just pointed out the chances of someone being a levitating exorcist with a medical degree was unlikely and pots and pans throwing themselves across rooms doesn’t happen because I genuinely thought people were saying they believed these things. Now that I’m aware that part of the fun is that everyone pretends to believe things that didn’t happen I stopped posting. I actually did apologise for the misunderstanding but it was deleted.

If it’s so fun to you carry on. I wouldn’t even have looked at this thread again had you not tagged me in it - so as long as you don’t again you’re free to post whatever you like without my interest.

youboozeyoulose · 30/06/2022 21:37

@Dummycrusher Correct. "Ruin the thread? Moi?"

youboozeyoulose · 30/06/2022 21:38

@Kanaloa yeah yeah yeah we know what you've pointed out you've posted it enough times now. Zzzzz.

I thought it was obvious that anyone who posts on a public website with about two million unique visitors a month about levitating and flying cheese was opening themselves to mockery and "nitpicking" (because one needs to be so pedantic to find something amiss there!). As it happened, it then turned out that half the people on here claim not to believe it or take it at all seriously anyway, so why on earth would it matter?

However, as Kanaloa said, the more pertinent question now is why you're tagging people you claim not to want here and who hadn't posted for hours.

You seem to think being dead is no reason to be inactive, so just revive the fucker.

youboozeyoulose · 30/06/2022 21:47

Seriously @ReneBumsWombats, what is your problem? You keep coming back with your input that's about as popular as a fart in a lift. No one cares! Oh sorry, three people care

I came back because I was tagged. I apologise if you thought I was doing it to be "popular", thus giving the impression that your approval matters. I know how much you hate to be misled.

youboozeyoulose · 30/06/2022 21:54

@ReneBumsWombats you know how much I hate to be misled? Eh??? Are you able to read minds? Seriously that's creepy. Guess you've contributed something to the thread.

Yes, I know you'd hate to feel like you believed something that wasn't true, after all. Christ, what a crap non-event.

Of course, if you really wanted me to leave and weren't absolutely desperate for me to provide the unparalleled excitement you usually get from Mumsnet woo threads, you'd stop tagging me.

youboozeyoulose · 30/06/2022 22:10

@ReneBumsWombatsSome advice. Stop saying you know what what I think. It's really weird.

I'll tell you some things about me that ARE true. I don't believe in ghosts. Also I don't like condescending, bullying bores.

PlantSpider · 30/06/2022 22:12

😴

Kanaloa · 30/06/2022 22:13

What is the attitude at the minute where people think anyone who disagrees with them is bullying them? You’ve been pretty rude yourself. Why don’t you just stop tagging people and we’ll stop coming into the thread. I’ve no interest in pretending I believe cheese flew across the room so I won’t check it - just don’t tag.

@ReneBumsWombats quite seriously, no. I'm a 38 year old female. Report this person if you haven't already.

Yes yes, and the lady a few pages ago really is a levitating exorcist medical professional. And you're totally not deliberately tagging me every single time to try to keep me coming back while claiming you're trying to SAVE the thread.

I don't usually play, but as several people have already pronounced the thread dead with me as its killer....

Now I realise what it is, it's too creepy to be anything else. But a genuine apology to the audience: if I had known what would happen when I rebuffed him a few nights ago, I honestly wouldn't have done it. I underestimated the obsession.
