Bit of woo going on at holiday home

MushyWoo · 27/06/2022 00:10

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

When I was a teen, my family and I went camping up Lancashire way. Straightaway the atmosphere was off. It was just eerie, flat and oppressive. I couldn't sleep one night and was lying wide awake, everything was silent and then I heard a childlike voice say 'it hurts, it hurts' over and over. I looked out the bedroom compartment and there was bright, white light outside our tent. It was horrendously creepy. I couldn't wait to leave. I've never been somewhere like that before where all joy was just squashed from you.

For the doubters. We only have 5 senses. Are we, as humans, quite so arrogant as to think there is nothing extra-sensory that might exist despite us not being able to sense it?

So these hypothesised "ghosts" can't be sensed by humans, yet there's a whole thread of people describing how they can hear them talking and see them doing things?

Oestrogelsmuggler · 29/06/2022 20:36

I, for one, am glad to know that salt repels ghosts. As if you just tell poltergeists to cease and desist, they obey.

Actually, we have at least 9. Though scientists generally agree about 21 (ish), some think there are as many as 53.

I believe You OP

We went to France at Easter one Year to an old Lodge on the grounds of a Chateau. Said Lodge had been where German soldiers stayed when Germany invaded France and the Officers lived in the Chateau .
Cold that House was until you put the logs on the fire to get it nice and warm
Anyway, to cut a long story short, we had been out all day and on coming home and through the back door to enter, there was one strong smell of Cider . None of us had, or drink cider .
Me and my Dad (who also smelled it) decided it might have been what those German soldiers drank in there, a long long time ago.

Love threads like this! We had a spooky encounter at longleat center oarcs a few years ago. We were there for 4 nights, on the first night we were all in bed about to go to sleep and the tv turned itself on with full volume music playing, we didn't leave it on that volume before turning it off that evening and hadn't been listening to music, next night I slept in with my little girl and at around 1am she woke up for some water, as I was trying to get back to sleep I heard knockingll, sounded like someone Knocking on the cupboard, bloody terrifiying! That same night my OH heard someone walking around innthe kitchen area, he was worried our little girl had woken up and got out of bed so he went to check and no one was there. It had a real creepy vibe and after we left we checked trip advisor and found some other spooky reviews.

Hello! FishWoman!

Oh yes, I do like Kate Bush!

I used to live in an old Victorian house, sometimes in the morning the light would be on in the downstairs bathroom, I would ask the children if they got up in the night, they never did. Sometimes I would go to bed and my clock radio would be flashing, no power cut, not been unplugged.

One evening I was watching TV, I had a desk in the corner of the lounge with a PC on, the PC just decided to power up and switch itself on. It was completely switched off. Lights would be on up stairs too sometimes. I was never scared in the house, neither were the children, they still talk about it now.

I’m arrogant enough to believe we don’t see ghosts chucking cheese around the kitchen, yeah. Maybe there’s extra-sensory stuff we aren’t able to sense but ghosts turning the cooker on and throwing cheddar slices isn’t in that category because it’s not extra-sensory and according to op she did see it.

Sillybeagle · 29/06/2022 21:28

Well I’ll give you a clue smart arse. If something sounds like it’s coming through your fucking ceiling from your shitty 1970s suburban loft you tend to need a light source that doesn’t come from mains electric……. The time it happened during the day obviously he didn’t use the torch.

Honestly surprised I thought if someone was going to take the piss or accuse me of lying they’d have focused on the red velvet curtains! 😂😂

As opposed to cheese magically flying from a fridge and cookers turning on and off independently. Not sure why I’m the ‘dappy’ one when people are literally queuing up to gush over this nonsense that’s blatantly not true.

I’d say it’s varying degrees of unreal.

MachineBee · 30/06/2022 07:45

SausageAndCash · 27/06/2022 00:14

You bought cheese slices in France?

Sliced cheese is often sold on the continent for Raclette.

Oh! Where?

There is a whole town, Rennes le Chateau, south of Carcassonne that’s associated with mucho woo - old, Christianity-based mysterious stuff.

We only went for a wander round once and it’s certainly not the most congenial town I’ve ever been to -DS couldn’t be doing with it, and wanted to go straight home.

summerin69 · 30/06/2022 08:01

My mum lived in a flat in a converted Edwardian property when my brother was a newborn (and also a year later when I was just born). A new mum in the flat above couldn't get into her baby's room one day - a chest of drawers had been moved in front of it. Very soon after that my mum walked into my brother's room and found this giant teddy bear we had (I mean it was about four foot tall) all the way over the other side of the room.

Recently I lived in an old converted Oast that was once used for hops. I was having a chat with my partner at the time. I'd set the oven timer to go off - and when it did I was still talking to my partner so left it a minute - in between the beeps we heard someone start whistling - like copying the beeps. I thought it was my daughter on the landing having a laugh - but when I called up to ask - she was right at the top of the house on the third floor and had no idea what I was talking about. It was a real human whistle... like it was having a joke about the oven timer and telling me to get a move on and turn it off. That area of the house was always weird - we used to see shadows coming and going and it just felt off. I've tried to think of all kinds of rational reasons but can't...

Staying remote cottage near Loch in Scotland with family and two adult friends. There were only two bedrooms so grownups stayed in cottage and two 9 and 10 year old boys slept outside in Camper van (their choice). During the night footsteps were heard marching down the hallway (it ran the whole length of the building. Dad checked outside to see if one of the boys had come in to use the loo but they were fast asleep! Both sets of adults heard the noise as it woke up DH and other two adults, evidently quite loud footsteps. I slept through it, I was so disappointed!

I'm just going to give some context to my reply earlier!

Exorcists exist in just about every religion. It's something not talked about because it's;
a) unpleasant and people think your bonkers if you talk about it
And
b) unless you have had a personal experience..your not going to seek help.
And
c) people who do delve in the occult don't discuss it openly..unless it's a slip of the tongue..

It is an open secret though....with just about every book, film or TV program glorifying magic, supernatural entities and otherworldly subject matters.
Child's book and fairy tales introduce our children to the occult from a very early age.... yet most people don't think anything of it except as fantasy....

Its all hidden in plain sight and has been for countless centuries.

But as this post was a general one..I did not want to unhinged anyone.

So I gave very general advice and I hope, advice that would be common sense.

If there's something in the house turning your cooker on and speaking audibly loud.. they are trying to get your attention and not remaining hidden.

So don't engage with them incase they too, feel they want to go on holiday and come back with you in your suitcase..

Why do I say this? Because I've seen it...they are incredibly attention seekingn which is obvious from the original post, and love to mess with your head!

My adviced to use Lavender and seasalt was because its something you can pick up from any supermarket or corner shop and will probably already be in most peoples cupboards. So it's a no hassle approach.

The "spirits" don't like salt and don't like strong natural smells like lavender so they will back off for a bit...
And that's all this family needs...
Just a little less interference in their lives to continue to enjoy their holiday.

If anyone thinks that supernatural complains are a mental problem or mass hallucination and only happens if there something wrong with the person having the experience..

Then this article discussing recruitment of Exorcists at the Vatican may give some food for thought.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-43697573.amp

Believe me, exorcists do not sit in the corner knitting a jumper when there's a exorcism session going on..

I hope my comments were helpful.
I apologise if I've unnerved anyone by my comments.

Please ignore my comments if they enrage you...
I don't have too many issues with "spirits" but I am terrified of "Karens" !!!! And I don't have a manger you can complain too!

Kanaloa · 30/06/2022 08:42

Maybe that was the problem with the cheese op. Too high in salt? Spirits don’t like salt. So be careful if there’s any leftover salted meats and whatnot.

If you're fine with ghosts but terrified of women saying things you don't like, maybe you need some better herbs to get some protective spirits. Let me guess, you're incredibly empathetic and sensitive and spiritual but for some reason, misogynistic slurs don't count?

Kanaloa · 30/06/2022 08:51

Also think (in the kindest way possible) an article about the Vatican is hardly going to have me gasping ‘oh wow, proof!’ I mean they have a vested interest in people believing in things that don’t exist, don’t they? The whole idea of demons/spirits/exorcisms is one of their things.

aqegg · 30/06/2022 09:07

This has been happening to me for a good 15 years or so. Most recently, my partner and I have both heard our little one clearly calling out to me in the night, but she's always fast asleep. We've had toys without batteries switch on, a few fridge magnets have flown off the side of the fridge - almost horizontally, and landed next to us. I have 'lost' a few dear jewelery items which have turned up 1 to 2 years later in the exact same place I left them in. We've moved into several properties over the last 15 years but it's as though it goes where we go 😄 both of my children have also seen and experienced it all (and there's a lot more). I've even tried all the religious bloo-blah too, but nothing.

Perhaps the message the spirit was trying to get through was, "lower your sooooooooooo-dium levels... eat more veg.... I didn't... look what became of meeeeeeeeee...."
