Modern bands and artists who could be headlining Glastonbury in 40 - 60 years time

Paul McCartney is 80 and headlined last night - some 60 years after the Cavern Club. A bit like someone who started in 1902 appearing in 1962 as a headline act

So which modern acts do you think will be headlining in 50 years time? Just watching Diana Ross now (playing Baby Love from 1964) Still sounds good.

So a starter..Ed Sheeran? Still doing his stuff

First aid kit blew me away!!!!!

PlanetNormal · 26/06/2022 20:31

Ed Sheeran is the most obvious candidate. Whatever you think about his music, he has both the ability as a live performer and the back catalogue to still be playing big festivals in his 70s, if he wants to.

EmmaH2022 · 26/06/2022 20:34

Taylor Swift
Sam Fender
The 1975

I just don't understand his appeal. I liked Shape of You but that is about it.

I think that I am too old (mid 50s).

Andifin · 26/06/2022 20:38

Sam Fender, Ed Sheeran, Brandon Flowers, Michael Buble, Mumford and Sons.

Trenisenne · 26/06/2022 20:39

Yeah, agree Brandon Flowers

I was very impressed with Sam Fender’s set.

@ShirleyJackson

I saw him supporting the Killers a few weeks ago and was disappointed as I was really looking forward to it (even more than the Killers). As usual a lot of people didn't turn up until just before the Killers were due on so there was no atmosphere.

But his Glastonbury set was amazing. I was so impressed and have watched it several times.

Fiddlersgreen · 26/06/2022 20:48

Sam Fender definitely. Watching his set now and have also seen him live before the pandemic

Stereophonics but maybe in like 20 years not 50/60!

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 26/06/2022 20:56

Yes agree with Stereophonics. They are brilliant live.

Haggisfish3 · 26/06/2022 21:13

Sam fender is amazing. Saw him in brum.

piperatthegates · 26/06/2022 21:18

Pink has the charisma and stage presence to still be going when she's 80 I think. And speaking of older stars Tom Jones and Dolly Parton still sound just as good to me as when they were young,

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 26/06/2022 21:21

Take that will do a legends slot.

Hopefully Pink will still be singing whilst suspended upside down in her 80s. She is amazing live.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/06/2022 21:25

Neneh Cherry. Fierce.

meandpuppy · 26/06/2022 21:26

I think Beyonce will still be going in 40 years (probably not dancing the way she does now). My dd is 25 so has grown up loving her- I think it'll be really special for her generation to have someone like Beyonce still going then- probably in the legends slot- so they can listen to all the songs they loved when they were kids

Oblomov22 · 26/06/2022 21:28

Older singers at Glastonbury are awful. PM was barely singing at some points and off key. DR was even worse. I watched Barry Gibb a Couple of years ago and he was truly awful which made me very sad because I had previously loved him. all three of these people and plenty of others just don't know when to stop and step down. can't they see that their singing is nothing compared to what it used to be. why haven't any of their friends told them that it's time to stop?

pilates · 26/06/2022 21:51

Sam Fender
Harry Styles

I used to love Diana Ross but she was diabolical tonight.

Hmm - ageist and not true. There are some who should stop, yes. Yesterday I heard Robert Plant (and Alison Kraus), Neil Finn and others. All are older and all can still sing.

Those who are musicians as well as singers have the option of having other singers interpret their songs and accompanying them and I'd rather listen to that than some whose voices have gone to the extent they cannot hit the notes or even actually sing anymore. I thought this when Barry Gibb murdered his back catalogue a few years ago.

lollipoprainbow · 27/06/2022 08:20

@Oblomov22 did you not see Neil Tennant last night ?! 68 and bloody amazing.

mewkins · 27/06/2022 08:36

I've enjoyed all of the oldies. I always wonder how much the music industry still supports artists like it used to. I think singers and bands are more disposable now. I think that will mean we don't get many being able to stick around for long which is sad. On a side note I loved the McCartney set. He's an amazing musician, still writing and recording because he loves music and performing, still interested in new artists. He has been through and seen so much.

Andifin · 27/06/2022 09:17

Outsider - Mel C. She has a strong voice which may carry her through.

Caminante · 27/06/2022 09:23

Neil Hannon is still going strong at 51. I can imagine him still performing in 20-30 years. So many lovely songs.

AnImaginaryCat · 27/06/2022 12:36

There are older singers that shouldn't have been performing because they just don't have the ability any more. They don't need to be bouncing around the stages but voices can go with age. Paul McCarthy and Diana Ross really show cased that fact.

Not looking for a blanket ban on older artists. Just think it'd be better if those that can don't.

Pet Shop Boys were brilliant. Neil Tennent is 67 and voice still there. (Chris Lowe is a bit younger.)

Oblomov22 · 27/06/2022 14:15

@WeAreTheHeroes : Hang on a sec, that isn't ageist. I never said ALL. I gave 3 examples of 3 that were really poor. Many other posters have agreed that they were truly awful. So how can it be ageist.
I never said a blanket ban on all older artists.
No I didn't see NT @ 68. I didn't comment on him.

OldTinHat · 27/06/2022 14:17

I watched the last member of Soul Train perform at the IoW festival this year. She's 83 and was quite amazing.
