What things would you refuse to cut back on despite rising costs etc?

Mine would be getting my hair done, treating myself to some unnecessary bits from primark, meeting friends for a coffee once a week.

Things that I've reluctantly given up are meals out with DH, take aways EVERY weekend ( maybe once a mth instead) buying unnecessary luxury food

What's things would you refuse to give up until you absolutely had to?

Massage. I am a massage therapist myself and it’s a physically demanding job, so getting a semi-regular massage for myself is part of staying able to do my job. I’m having one tomorrow and I can’t wait.

I will also be clinging onto my haircuts until the bitter end, even if I have to go a bit longer between appointments.

CanYouNotReadTheSign · 26/06/2022 18:33

My daughter's activities, heating and holidays. We both need these for our own wellbeing.

Sarah13xx · 26/06/2022 18:34

Used to buy the Norpak butter til I got a taste of Lurpak again, I’m very much back on the Lurpak and won’t be stopping it again 🙈 such a difference in some things!

Don’t know how I ever afforded a night out every week or every other week. Cut back on meals out too now. Still buying shopping from Tesco purely because I have a baby and the hassle of trailing round different supermarkets to save 28p doesn’t seem worth it 😂

gottaloveascamhun · 26/06/2022 18:38

Gym membership. I love the outdoor pool, spa and classes. I go 5 times a week so definitely get value from it and my health and fitness have significantly improved since joining.

Happy to have no takeaways and cut back on alcohol and clothes shopping if I can keep the gym.

whyohehy · 26/06/2022 18:39

A decent coffee. I'd never give it up. It's a very little thing that I enjoy so much.

Mellowyellow222 · 26/06/2022 18:40

keeping all Insurance - pet, car, house, life and health. Keeping ground coffee!

cutting back on new clothes, steaks dinners at the weekend, wine, take away coffees, fresh flowers, meal subscriptions and some streaming subscriptions.

Rreaq · 26/06/2022 18:41

Heinz beans, we buy pretty much everything value but the value beans are not a patch on Heinz.

Cyw2018 · 26/06/2022 18:42

I won't cut back on daily long hot showers.

We are already cutting back on eating out, and I will be making a lot more picnics for DD and I over the summer holidays.

Mellowyellow222 · 26/06/2022 18:43

I long for the day when we can talk about things that affect us and that we choose to prioritise, and not be shamed for it because Others Are Much Worse Off! 🙄

This!!! Every time someone posts anything about a lifestyle choice someone comes on and says this!

and the ‘tone deaf’ trotted out is just so basic!

WoahWhatAFeeling · 26/06/2022 18:46

Flat whites.
Netflix & Amazon Prime because we don't have terrestrial TV.
Haircuts, though have recently moved to a hairdresser who's much cheaper.
My array of supplements and herbal medicines.

caringcarer · 26/06/2022 18:48

I won't give up buying decent food or keeping house warm in winter.

Won't give up Netflix or Virgin TV package including Sky Sport and BT Sport.

I will cut back on meals out, takeaways and less new clothing.

spiderlight · 26/06/2022 18:49

Pet insurance. Our dog has run up a bill of about 4k since April for a serious illness and we would be absolutely screwed without the insurance to cover it.

Bird & Blend tea. Since I had Covid, it's the only tea I can taste.

LondonWolf · 26/06/2022 18:54

Solosunrise · 26/06/2022 17:07

Yes you're right, I guess @LondonWolf I suspect it's because of the use of the word 'refuse' in the OP (sorry OP!) combined with people I work with struggling to make ends meet because pay is rubbish and petrol costs are high.
And listening to people blaming the poor for being poor.
I've recently had to listen to my wealthy mother going on about making sacrifices despite them not being necessary for her, seemingly to show a good example to those wretched complainers who would be fine if they'd only learn to budget properly and make soup from home grown cabbage.

Just a bit sore I guess. Sorry!

I'm sorry too. I was probably a bit too eye rolly there. I'm a single parent and get a lot of judgment for it. Lots of raised eyebrows because I'm off gadding about with my kids...AGAIN. My ex H even uses the fact that we go on the occasional nice holiday as an excuse to stop paying child support and jet in and out of the country so he can't be pinned down, and when he is here "has no income" so can't be expected to pay. I think they know that I go without in many ways to be able to afford to give my children experiences but it suits them to pretend otherwise. Sometimes other people really suck don't they?

Caramac555 · 26/06/2022 18:55

Insurance for me. I have had reason to be grateful for decent house and health insurance in the past.

Also botox and wine and netflix. I've calculated how much overtime i need to do to cover my botox and I'm up for it.

Willing to give up large car, meat, hairdresser, clothes shopping, buying books, going abroad, and happy to turn the heating down and eat packed lunches.

rubberhead · 26/06/2022 18:58

I'm so glad most of you saw the innocence in my post and aren't offended or upset by it. It was never my intention to make people feel rubbish or rub salt in wounds. It was just a curiosity post more than anything as we all have things that we enjoy or do that give us incentive or help us through the week. For those that found it distasteful, I'm sorry x

Err nothing. Rarely have take aways, rarely have coffee or meals out and the car is used for work and work only. Might give it a good run out of town a couple of times a year. Hair I get done once or twice a year. Never have my nails done and I buy the cheapest version of every I can

AliasGrape · 26/06/2022 19:04

Lurpak and Yorkshire Teabags.

Im holding out on giving ho one of our cars for as long as I can too. DH works from home at least a couple of days a week and I work part time freelance, not many clients at the moment as just really starting out so only really adds up to one or two days a week some weeks, other times it’s much busier. In theory getting rid of one car makes sense, and it may come to that, but I want to have the option of going back to supply teaching if the freelance work doesn’t work out long term, which means I’ll need a car, and I also hate the idea of losing that bit of independence somehow. For now the compromise is using it as little as possible.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 26/06/2022 19:04

Private dentistry. I've got really weak teeth and often need work. I therefore only have white filings and high quality work to hide the damage. Also frequent check ups and hygiene appointments to get on top of anything before it becomes major.

I don't drink, smoke or have a lavish lifestyle, so this is what I choose to spend my money on.

peaceanddove · 26/06/2022 19:07

We're incredibly privileged because the cost of living won't affect us. But, if I did have to cut back then my cleaner, REN skincare and fortnightly Shellac manicures would be the very last to go [shudders]

Amabelle · 26/06/2022 19:09

My cleaner. She's already lost work recently due to people cutting back.

Gym membership- works out a bargain as I go every day and feel so much healthier as a result.

FemmeNatal · 26/06/2022 18:17

Champagne. What’s the point in anything if you can’t have a glass of champagne?

You sound like someone I would get on really well with Smile

Don't take it personally. People on here live to be offended.
I won't give up socialising with friends. Meals, nights out etc. I won't compromise. I work really hard and it makes me happy :)

Brexit has royally messed-up the Champagne situation. No more annual trips there, coming back with eighty bottles of something excellent for €18 per bottle.

Hard times are a coming…

Snugglepumpkin · 26/06/2022 19:22

Coffee, my software subs & books.

I don't see the point without them.
