Anything your DDs or DSs have enjoyed at this age?

I was thinking Little House on the Prairie. She's 9 next week.

Mallory Towers
The younger Jacqueline Wilson stories
School for good and evil

All books my eldest enjoyed at that age (and Harry potter but that's a given if she's an avid reader)

FortonServices · 26/06/2022 16:16

Thanks. Yes, she's read most of the more popular ones. I was trying to think of books that I liked at that age but may not be as trendy now.

Oh...and Rudy Redfort, couldn't remember the blimmin name!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2022 16:20

The Swallows and Amazons series.
I was a total bookworm, I think those were my all-time favourites. (I was so delighted to see a Great Northern for the first time this year, the best part of 50 years since I read the eponymous final book!Grin)

Haus1234 · 26/06/2022 16:23

I would have LOVED book tokens at that age because then you can choose anything! Maybe seen as an inferior present since you don’t choose but so nice to get to go to a bookshop yourself!

goldfinchonthelawn · 26/06/2022 16:24

At that age the classics I adored were Wolves of Willoughby Chase and Blackhearts in Battersea. I thought they might have dated but read them to DC when they were that age, and they loved them too. Also The Silver Sword (which again, my DC adored so it has aged well.)

Anything by Cornelia Funke - Inkheart or The Thief Lord

Applesandroses · 26/06/2022 16:24

Book subscription, I have one for my nephew so he gets a book a month and its a nice random mix

goldfinchonthelawn · 26/06/2022 16:26

The only problem with book tokens is shops keep such limited stock these days. They don't always have the classics or even the best contemporary stuff. Just rows and rows of David Walliams andJacqueline Wilson so there's not much choice for keen readers.

I'd be inclined to introduce them to some good new work.

They holiday in the lakes sometimes. I'll check with her M&D to make sure she hasn't already read it 😀

Thank you. I've not read these but I'm early 40s so maybe a different generation. Will have a look.

Mallory Towers
Famous 5
Magic faraway tree
Roald Dahl collection?

Simbobbly · 26/06/2022 16:31

The Roman Mysteries box set if you can find it (there are about 17 of them) or The Name of this book is Secret series

Haus1234 · 26/06/2022 16:34

My vote for an actual book would be Diana Wynne Jones - maybe the Chrestomanci series.

Quornflakegirl · 26/06/2022 16:39

My 9 year olds love Michael Morpurgo and Katherine Rundell.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 26/06/2022 16:42

Ballet Shoes?.(Noel Streatfeild book, not actual Ballet Shoes).

Anothernamechangeplease · 26/06/2022 16:45

Honestly, I'd check with the parents to see what she already has, as an avid reader may have already worked her way through lots of the suggestions on here.

LaTangerina · 26/06/2022 16:49

My daughter aged 10 thoroughly enjoyed the Scarlett & Ivy series, she's on the last book in the series now & we're about to buy other books by the same author.

My Family and Other Animals? Think I read that at about that age and nearly died laughing. Still makes me laugh now!

Anothernamechangeplease · 26/06/2022 17:00

I would add that I was an avid reader and was obsessed at that age with the Anne of Green Gables series. Also loved Noel Streatfield, especially White Boots. Little Women and Heidi were favourites too. The Narnia books were also great but I expect she'll have read them already.

My dd was also an avid reader and got very into Philip Pullman at that age. Personally, I think Northern Lights is wasted on a 9yo, but dd totally loved it then and still loves it at 17. She definitely won't understand it all at 9 though.

Another of dd's favourites at that age was Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson. Nice book. And I think she also started getting into stuff like the Hunger Games at that age, though some 9yos would still be a bit young for that kind of stuff.

FredGarland · 26/06/2022 17:09

Howl's Moving Castle - Diana Wynne Jones. Such a good book.

MrsIronfoundersson · 26/06/2022 17:14

Robin Stevens' Murder Most Unladylike plus the following 9 or so following books. DD loved them.

Weepingwillows12 · 26/06/2022 17:20

I loved Willard Price's Adventure series. They are old books about two boys who collect animals for zoos around the world. Made me love animals and travel but, similar to Enid Blyton, sometimes need explanation around that's not considered appropriate anymore.

FortonServices · 26/06/2022 17:21

Thanks all, I'll make a list and check with her M&D.
