Anything your DDs or DSs have enjoyed at this age?

I was thinking Little House on the Prairie. She's 9 next week.

Mary Poppins series.
Family From One End Street series.
Finn Family Moomintrolls.
What Katy Did, and What Katy Did Next. Jacqueline Wilson has recently (last couple of years) written a modern day version of What Katy Did, so it might be fun to get both and be able to compare.
Pippi Longstocking.

A little princess was another all-time favourite for me as a kid. It's much better than it sounds from the title!!

Definitely Diana Wynne Jones. I was about that age when I first read "Charmed Life" and got hooked on DWJ.

Eva Ibbotson.
Noel Streatfeild - there's so much more to her books than just "Ballet Shoes".

A 9 yr old avid reader may have her own particular tastes. Dd likes to choose her own books and likes nothing more than national book tokens (or Amazon gift card). She also likes to go to the library to try books out first.

For what its worth dd likes many of the suggestions above (Ruby Redfort, Skulduggery, School of good and evil) but also really didn't like some of the other suggestions above (eg Morpugo/Rundell).
Other friends of hers found the Skulduggery series scary and loved Rundell. So can really depend on the individual child.

I'd really recommend book tokens/Amazon if you're unsure.

If she hasn't already read them I think your original suggestion of one of the Little House books would be perfect (starting with Little House in the Big Woods).

They aren't as popular in the UK but they are amazing books and I loved them at that age. Also the Noel Streatfeild and Joan Aiken books.

The Lemony Snicket books - A Series of Unfortunate Events. My daughter loved them and I loved reading them to her (happy memories)

Diana Wynne Jones (all of)
Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series
Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series

So many good books out there for that age.

Malamander by Thomas Taylor
The Highland Falcon Thief by M G Leonard
The Polar Bears Explorer's Club by Alex Bell
