Has anyone found they've lost their appetite for meat?

erikbloodaxe · 26/06/2022 10:34

For no other reason than they just don't fancy it. I'm not complaining or anything like that but having been married to a butcher for over 20 years previously I ate a lot of meat. Every meal. It started with not being able to face chicken, then slowly most meats.

I'm not vegetarian, I still eat ham occasionally and do eat fish.

I know this is about as interesting as a bath sponge. Maybe it's an age thing (54), maybe it's hormones. Anyone else just go off meat?

My diet is very good before anyone mentions all the ways to up protein in my diet. I already know Wink

I am the same. I don't mind something like bacon cubes or chorizo in pasta but totally gone off things like steak, chops, roasts etc. I still like chicken at time but again in a salad, pasta or pasty but not on its own. I am in my late 30s

MrsPrimulaSpread · 26/06/2022 10:58

Yep, same age as you too
Just not appealing

Hoppinggreen · 26/06/2022 10:59

Me too.
I eat meat in a curry or the odd ham sandwich but I probably only eat it 2 or 3 times a week. I couldn’t eat a big lump of it like a chicken breast or steak.
DD is vegetarian and allergic to Quorn so I cook veggie food most days and we found it was easier to all eat the same thing. I do have meat in the freezer and if we fancy it we eat it but most of the time I’m not bothered

I'm 53 and the same. I've never been a big meat eater but I've been increasingly unable to face it for about three years. I can still manage chicken but no red meats at all.

Somethingyesterday · 26/06/2022 11:01

I did, about a decade and a half ago. (In early middle age.)

First the idea of chicken began to seem … not very nice. So I gave it up.

Then I found that a couple of health conditions improved when I stopped eating meat temporarily. So I gave it up permanently.

It felt like a huge relief. In terms of thinking about ethics and the environment. (I know these arguments are not cut and dried.) In terms of an area of cooking I’d found arduous and boring. In terms of expense, too.

I’ve never missed meat. In the beginning I did miss game - and the fun of queuing outside the butcher’s for a brace of pheasants or other birds.

I will say it took a few years probably to fully revise how I eat. Now I probably spend as much as omnivores spend on meat on fruit and veg and pulses and grains. I do still theoretically eat fish - but I have to actively remember to do so. But I easily consume enough protein and my diet is the best it’s ever been.

Kennykenkencat · 26/06/2022 11:02

Never could stomach meat (literally)

Relief when I realised connected meat to stomach aches
Haven’t eaten meat for decades. I hardly look at what I eat in terms of protein etc
I was always anaemic and had stomach problems when I ate meat. (One nearly killed me)
Stopped overnight the moment I became vegetarian. Now vegan

maeveiscurious · 26/06/2022 11:04

Yes leaves me cold

EdithStourton · 26/06/2022 11:07

No.
I've always enjoyed it and I still do.

We currently have half a grass fed lamb in the freezer, which is due to be joined by a muntjac when a mate of mine next has one.

OompaLoompaa · 26/06/2022 11:09

Yep but I still enjoy fish.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 26/06/2022 11:16

A bit, yeah. I got food poisoning from chicken — twice! — a few years ago and since then have been increasingly choosy about it.

I still eat meat, and enjoy it, but I'm now even more particular about where it comes from. It's all about the welfare, for me. The net result of this is that I spend more on individual pieces/cuts, but have it much less often as a result.

I still eat quite a lot of fish and seafood, although the same applies re quality/sustainability. But then I live in Scotland and we're rather spoiled for high-quality sea and river produce here.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 26/06/2022 11:16

I was vegetarian during the week for decades but still enjoyed e.g. a chicken curry and Sunday roast. Gradually I found I lost my appetite for it and now when DH cooks chicken or pork the smell turns my stomach. I have to get out of the kitchen. Last Christmas was the first one where we had a turkey but I didn't want any.

beautifulworldwhereareyou · 26/06/2022 11:20

I’m vegetarian but yes. I don’t enjoy meat and with things like beyond meat burgers available now I don’t see why people would choose the meat option.

FootontheHeartbreak · 26/06/2022 11:22

Me.
Why am I eating bits of dead corpse? It really is disgusting when you think about it.

BlueKaftan · 26/06/2022 11:25

Definitely as I’ve reached menopause. I like fish still but beef is gross to me now.

Blondebakingmumma · 26/06/2022 11:55

I eat a meat based diet. Tastes great and I feel fantastic.

adorablecat · 26/06/2022 11:59

No, not at all. If anything, I have become more carnivorous than I was. I don't eat meat every day but I have it at least once or twice a week and fish two or three times a week. I love a good steak with a glass of red wine.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/06/2022 11:59

I have completely gone off fish, it started with pregnancy but now things like prawns in particular make me feel really sick to think about eating

I love lamb and burgers still but things like a huge steak don’t appeal. I think it’s the mass of meat that makes me feel a bit odd

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/06/2022 12:02

I became a vegetarian about two years ago. I was expecting it to be temporary and thought I’d go back to meat eating but the longer I go on the less likely I will.

Comedycook · 26/06/2022 12:02

I went off meat when I was pregnant. Now, if I don't eat meat, I really really crave it.

GreenIsle · 26/06/2022 12:08

My DH is vegan so over time I have started to be turned off meat although I will still occasionally have bacon or when out for dinner meat. It's mainly when I cook it and can see it raw that I am out off so don't buy it much.

brokengoalposts · 26/06/2022 12:19

I've never really been much of a meat eater, I'm not vegetarian but I eat very little meat. I'm 55 now but I've always felt this way but plodded on eating meat as I was cooking for the family and couldn't be bothered to make something else for myself, I'd just dish myself small amounts. Dd is now vegetarian so we have some great no meat recipes. Ds and dh are happy enough to eat veggie too so I treat them to big steaks every once in a while, last night being one of those times. Dd was out, so it seemed like the ideal time, I ate veggie curry leftovers, it keeps them happy.

And that's great for you, this isn't a meat eater bashing thread.

Some of us don't care one way or the other. I rarely eat meat, my food tastes great and I also feel fantastic.

genericusername789 · 26/06/2022 12:30

Yes, have felt the exact same over the past few months, started with chicken but now I'm put off by the majority of meat

erikbloodaxe · 26/06/2022 13:27

@Blondebakingmumma and any other PP that missed the point this isn't about Vegetarian V Meat. I've eaten and very much enjoyed a meat based diet (extremely high quality meat at that) all my life and all of a sudden I just cannot stomach the thought of eating it. No reason other than no appetite for it. I wonder if it's a post covid thing.

I suddenly went off meat after my last pregnancy (during which I had constantly craved meat). Perhaps I just ate so much that I became sick of it. I’m now at almost a year of eating no meat and have got to the point where even the thought of eating sweets containing gelatine makes me feel nauseous. Shame really, I used to love a chicken curry/roast chicken dinner/steak and peppercorn sauce!
