Off topic but i shopped in Sainsburys this week (first time in a while as it is our least local) and was very surprised that our shopping was roughly the same price as our usual aldi shop and the food (especially fruit and veg) is much fresher

Eating up from the full freezer and cupboards, seeing how long can go without a big shop.

You've given up eating from the cupboards?

I've stopped buying salmon, the chilli glaze one I buy DS is now £5 for two thin bits

PaddleBoardingMomma · 26/06/2022 10:02

I recently had cause to completely overhaul my skin care and make up, so not the usual weekly shop (which has gone from £70-100, in sainsburys) and it was over £300. So it's not just food stuffs that have risen. A particular primer I use was £24 is now £28

Thanks @Ambertonix. I’ve done similar with Pukka tea, which went from under £2 to over £3 a box, but tbh even at £1.50 I balked at the price of crisps and waited for when they were on offer. As a pp said, that’s 300 calories a night saved (I do miss them though!)

I'm doing lots of clothes swap with my sister. I went on holiday in April and she's going later in the year so she's taking my holiday clothes. I've got a dressy event this week and wearing

Oops posted too soon. I'm borrowing an event outfit from her.

Sat in my usual coffee shop yesterday - enjoyed my Flat White and a shortbread cookie .

£6.60 😫

I tap my card so often without thinking about it but this is just ridiculous

Drive through McD coffee was 99p on my long journey this AM , tasted exactly the same and could have sat in if I wanted I didn't as I'd have been tempted by breakfast

@Branster
pet plan while excellent pet insurance is often 3 times the cost of other insurance

it your dog has nothing mentioned on vet notes
or has had any illness operations then it’s worth changing as it won’t have any pre expiating conditions

look at Many & Pets K-9

My french bulldogs insurance cost more than my brand new car insurance at 57 a month for 7k lifetime
Pet plan wanted £130 a month

Depending on the breed of dog shopping around can definitely be worth it
Some breeds bulldogs french bulldogs, DDB
are always very expensive to insure
but others like labs are much cheaper

We adoptedf a 'new' rescue dog in paril after our previous rescue died in February. Previous one was on with PetPlan for about £400 a year and they shelled out a fair bit (he needed spine surgery), though not as much as the £7k they'd shelled out in one year on our previous rescue!

ANYHOO - quote from PetPlan for new rescue was a staggering £150 a MONTH! So, we went to Direct Line, our car and home insurers; we're paying them £32 a month...

Nothing as yet because we got the shock of our lives realising we were entitled to some (significant amount) benefits, which has taken the edge off for now. Come autumn we will be cutting back on a lot to pay for energy and fuel. We are using the car less but we're also on a fitness kick so I'm not sure whats influencing us more. We do already live quite frugally though, we buy own brands, Check for offers, buy used clothes and toys etc. Sell to buy and such.

I really would advise everyone to check their benefits entitlement though, every penny counts, and you might get a nice surprise 🙂

cottagegardenflower · 26/06/2022 10:11

Good clothes, and clothes in general. I can't give up my sports hobby though, it's sanity saving.

HazelBite · 26/06/2022 10:11

I cut down a lot on my expenditure a few years back when I retired so I have very little to cut back on.
We are on the verge of a huge recession, DH is a self employed builder and a lot of people have cancelled "jobs" and work is drying up. This is a repeat of what happened during the last two recessions.

namechangeanonymous · 26/06/2022 10:11

Coffee shop coffees, I love sitting in there with my book and people watching but at over £4 a coffee I just can't justify it anymore. not to mention the cake habbit £3!
Were having less takeaways too
And using our cars less.
Were fortunate that these at the moment are decisions not necessity but I can see it becoming a necessity.

cottagegardenflower · 26/06/2022 10:12

Takeaway lovely coffee. Environmental waste as well as cost.

Hawdyerwheesht · 26/06/2022 10:14

Making sure I look at airtime rewards promos if I'm shopping between supermarkets.

Forpoxsake · 26/06/2022 10:21

As a single parent I am finding it hard as I had already stripped back anyway - my wages from work don’t ever cover my rent and all bills, so every penny is accounted for with the UC top up I receive.
Really dreading winter months!

RoseMartha · 26/06/2022 10:21

Less treat food for dc's like biscuits etc

Less meat, not that we ate loads to start with.

In fact more eggs OP to compensate for the meat reduction. I used to buy 6-12 a month now abt 6 a week.

Eat meat 2-3 a week max. Before ate meat about 5 times a week.

I also divide and freeze on purchase. Eg will cut and freeze portions of pizza so dont waste it. Or divide fresh sausages to portions and freeze. And divide bread and rolls.

MarvelMrs · 26/06/2022 10:22

Butter. Buying cheaper spreads now.
Crisps. Barely any good deals on them.

A positive effect is the kids are snacking on better food because they realise the treats run out fast and I don’t replace them.

dizzygirl1 · 26/06/2022 10:24

Smarty Is a good option for sim only deals -30gb data, unlimited texts and calls for £10 a month. Useful for teens!
I'm noticing it on food in the online tesco shop- my 2pt milk went up 30p, cheese 50p that's just 2. I already buy value or own brand.
I was aiming to book a holiday next year to celebrate BIG birthdays but I'm just too nervous to book,

FabFitFifties · 26/06/2022 10:25

Dogs are getting a poor deal here. I hope none of them become dispensable, or worse suffer unnecessarily, when their very expensive operation, no longer covered by insurance, is considered low priority.

Hagrod · 26/06/2022 10:26

Smoked haddock since it's gone up to £6.50 for a pack 😵Miss having kedgeree.

I think it's inevitable.

Free range chicken

Fifi0102 · 26/06/2022 06:22

Lurpak it's gone too expensive ridiculous.

@Fifi0102 try the Aldi version Nordpak, it’s just as good. But the Lidl version Danepak is not.

ShandaLear · 26/06/2022 10:30

Petrol. Bought 2nd hand bike for £100 of Facebay and use it for almost all trips of less than about 5k including work. Have saved hundreds in parking, it’s actually much quicker around town than driving, parking, and then waking to where you want to get to, and I’ve got a bit fitter in the process. Wish I’d thought of it years ago.
