We're not struggling for money but we're prioritising paying off debts, so cutting back in other areas so that we don't have to cut back there.

  • We have a weekly recipe box, which is worth it to me because it's 4 evening meals I don't have to think about. Normally I'd do an online shop every weekt o top up and get food in for the other three days. I've cut this down to once a fortnight, using up bits in the freezer and cupboards and just going to the corner shop for milk.
  • The kids used to do multiple clubs, at least one each every evening, sometimes two. I realised how crazy that was during lockdown and cut back afterwards, but it's dropped to just one club a week each now.
  • I WFH as much as possible to save on petrol.
  • The finance on my car runs out in August and I'm not planning to get another one for a while. DH has an electric car that I can borrow when he isn't at work. I can take the train to work if I have to, although it's not ideal.
  • We used to do days out or paid activities every weekend. Now we stay local, meet up with friends and family at the park or do something else free. None of us miss being on the go all the time.

Takeaways, meals out, anything ‘non-essential’. I’m making do with old clothes and haven’t had a haircut for 6 months

narkyspirit · 27/06/2022 19:11

Food shopping has stayed almost the same level, less nipping to the pub for a quick beer see below the reason.

I still have Gym membership and for the time being PT twice a week, I have also started using Bike a lot more.

My boat has been sold, marina fees where getting shocking and the price of fuel is unsustainable for the boat at the moment, up side is I got more than I paid 4 years ago. No Marina bar bills either

Oh and taking packed lunch to work. I walk through M&S on my way to work and I was spending a fortune on my lunch. I think it’s the mindless spending that’s gone which is not a bad thing surely.

I agree, even with a good income we are much more aware of wasting food or spending ridiculous money. If we buy anything expensive or nice we use it/eat/drink it.

Pet insurance. 😞

So what will you do when your dog gets ill? I had a bill 10 years ago for £11,997. Have had many for £800-£1000. Without the insurance my dogs would have been PTS. Currently paying £42 for a puppy and £130 for a senior, per month. No matter how hard it gets, I just couldn’t cancel it as I know something awful would happen as soon as I did!

HappyinChester · 27/06/2022 19:16

Ice cream. Just seems to be really pricey 😟

HappyinChester · 27/06/2022 19:20

This is so sad to read that we are cutting out our basics but still working as hard while bojo Sunak and Co are becoming billionaires 😡🤬

Jack80 · 27/06/2022 19:21

We shop at Aldi, Iceland and get bits from Asda.

Drunkandalone · 27/06/2022 19:22

Toilet roll

Oscarsdaddy · 27/06/2022 19:23

We had a right result from our weekly Ocado delivery on Saturday

Still have no idea what happened but out of £70 worth of shopping they sent us an email saying we returned all bar 3 of the items so charged us just £6.75

I will take that as a win but will stick with online grocery shopping as I find that going into the store you just buy compulsively rather that only what you need.

Our Gas & Electric monthly payments have doubled and we are using it, heaven knows what the winter will bring. If something isn’t done soon to stop this greed by providers there will be anarchy on the Streets

BrylcreamBeret · 27/06/2022 19:23

Clothes for me and H. I am wearing tatty worn out drab colourless clothes because even on EBay they're expensive.

Londoncallingme · 27/06/2022 19:28

Lurpak £5.00!

HarryStottel · 27/06/2022 19:32

Our last guinea pig died, so not going to replace him, that will save on sawdust, hay, straw, food.

Will never again catch a taxi; plan ahead and get last bus from any events or say you can't make them.

Birthday 'presents' are now just practical vouchers, not for a treat for me.

No new clothes unless existing ones worn out, and then it's charity shop stuff.

Look, we are fortunate enough to be able to put food on the table and to keep a roof over our heads, but it is weird suddenly having to save or find another £150 a month or so .

You should have a look at Vinted. I’ve sold quite a bit and buy a few bits on there. I prefer it to eBay.

Mamaof2males · 27/06/2022 19:36

I get free range chicken thighs and whole
Chicken from Aldi too. ( the thighs are priced per pack so make sure to look for the largest weight)

Mamaof2males · 27/06/2022 19:38

I also love Vinted! Have got some decent things from there (astroturf boots for 11yo £9 , converse for both boys £11 each and a hush jacket for me for £11 - and haggle too if overpriced or been on for a while or choose the cheapest delivery method cost.

Branster · 26/06/2022 07:34

Thank you for this tip.
Do they offer an all in for life option?
Is it easy to switch?
Ours is one of those all in for life with pet plan and it's insanely expensive but I'm scared to move, downgrade or cancel. It's my highest regular debit.

Same here Branster. Two dogs with PetPlan, one has two on going health issues which are covered for life. As far as I’m aware Petplan has three levels of cover. My vet says to never leave Petplan but just downgrade the cover if that’s an option. These cheap supermarket insurances just don’t pay out. Petplan rarely quibble.

Katsuwonus · 27/06/2022 19:45

I cut the annual London Zoo family membership. 😢

Drunkandalone · 27/06/2022 19:46

If you’re happy to sacrifice your pet insurance you shouldn’t be allowed those pets in my opinion. Rehome the poor babies. It is unfair to sacrifice their health care.

If you cancel a service - eg yoga - be prepared for it to close.

Sadly I would imagine lots of local smaller classes will close. Some of us see fitness as a necessity but for a lot of people it's a luxury that can be poorly replaced by free online work outs etc. A lot of people bought a lot of exercise equipment in lock down such as weights, bikes etc - I wonder if they are getting some more use now?
Likewise hairdressers (not that I ever go), nail salons (a treat for me), etc etc. I do think some people again will either have the cash, pay for visits as a gift/treat for friends and family or see it as their own luxury.

Meanwhile I try not to use the oven - costs a fortune so better to do one bulk cook per week. Eat same food 3 or 4 times and get a portion of last week's dish out of the freezer. I also eat cold leftover - hot meals are a luxury but microwave re-heated cheaper. Had a cold shower yesterday - I just can't wash my hair that way - even at this time of year but ok for a quick am 2 min job.

Iceland do blocks of butter for £1.90. I don’t eat during the day anymore, just have dinner with my DS.
Sometimes I get to make some crepes if there’s eggs to use up. I make a lot more from scratch, not a bad thing. Still eating meat but less of it, a pack of mince will now do us 4-5 meals, whole chicken the same.
No work doing in the home.

I have a tumble dryer because my son has asthma so I can’t dry it indoors or outside due to the pollen. I wondered if anyone had or has used those dri buddy’s? Are they any good and cheaper to run?

What size of a pack of mince and how many people?

Re coffee capsules… is there a cheaper copy for Tassimo does anyone know?

I did the sums on this for work about how quickly you can save with the more expensive original nespresso machine using the really good but cheaper aldi pods over the cheaper tassimo machine but more expensive pods.

i think the nespresso machine was cheaper within 6 weeks.

i hope that makes sense! it’s worth doing the sums. Lakeland and occasionally aldi do a mixed machine that takes nespresso and the gusto pods. So you can still have the fancy hot chocs etc as well.

10 Birds Eye cod fish fingers £3.50 !!! I’ve stopped buying them.

Buy aldi cod fish fingers instead. They are £1.40 ish

Also aldi chicken dippers are lovely, have more meat in them than bird's-eye and are half the price.

Yourinmyspot · 27/06/2022 19:52

Books. I didn’t buy lots anyway but they have got expensive as they never seem to have good deals on them now. I look which ones I want to read and order them from the library instead. My mum does the same - we used to lend the ones we bought to each other.

RudsyFarmer · 27/06/2022 19:53

I do wonder who’s affording some of the meat in supermarkets now. Particularly the joints. I’m hoping we might see a return of the slow cooked cuts such as oxtail which are blimming delicious.
