1 in 4 pregnancies ends in abortion?

Reading the BBC article about the US ruling, it says that in the US 1 in 6 pregnancies ends in abortion, which I thought seemed very high, but I looked it up and it's 1 in 4 in UK.

I'd fight very hard indeed if anyone challenged a woman's right to choose here, but isn't that very high? Is there some truth in the argument that it's being used as contraception? I've heard it said before and dismissed it as ridiculous but 25%?!

Bear with me a sec and I'll post the links.

It's not rocket science. It's that high because so many people have one night stands or casual relationships without considering the consequences, or they don't use contraception at all, or they use contraception incorrectly. It obviously isn't taboo to sleep around in the UK like it would be elsewhere.

Very few unwanted pregnancies are the results of people actively practising safe sex in a stable, monogamous relationship.

Abortions are safe and readily available, as they should be. It's easy for women to 'sort it out' if they do become pregnant.

Although it sounds high, when you put it in context it isn't.
I've been pregnant 4 times. I have had 1 abortion, 1 miscarriage and have 2 children. I fit into that statistic, I'm probably not that unusual. Most people don't get pregnant that often.

Slight tangent but I have exactly the same statistics as you. 4 pregnancies, 1 miscarriage, 1 termination, 2 children.

Worldwide abortion rates, the UK is average for countries with legal abortions, there are more abortions in countries where it is illegal because there is also less sex education and less access to contraception.

This is absolute misognystic, narrow minded, non judgemental nonsense.

...Basically no one wants to have an abortion, its a horrible experience....

Really?
Or is abortion, whether legal or not, only acceptable if women are suitably repentant and traumatised by it?

I'm glad you said this, I was trying to think of how to phrase it. I loathe the notion that with every abortion there is trauma of some sort. That no woman could have one and feel no different than if she had harmless mole removed.

Pro-choice so long as there was a deep anguish when making the decision and a suitability palatable justification.

ONS 2021 summary of terminations.

About 89% of terminations in 2021 were <= 10 weeks gestation (thus) Medical abortions accounted for 87% of total abortions in 2021..... 57% of women undergoing abortions had had one or more previous pregnancies that resulted in a live or stillbirth.

Ground E abortions are those performed because of fetal abnormality at any gestation. There were 3,370 abortions performed under ground E in 2021. (about 1%)

This should be written in 30 foot letters, neon flashing, and with a klaxon sounding next to the Supreme Court and the house of any arsehole who pickets abortion clinics.

It's not about babies, it's about hating women.

imperialminty · 25/06/2022 17:43

Who cares how many pregnancies end in abortion? Women have a right to do what they want with their bodies.

100%

I think it's utterly disgusting we are now having to resort to inspecting why women have abortions.

EL8888 · 25/06/2022 17:46

I struggle to believe that. But then again in a lot of places accessing contraception is difficult. So it’s part of a similar problem

FourTeaFallOut · 25/06/2022 17:47

Are some posters seriously saying that one night stands have increased this much since 2016 or that sex education has demised to this degree?

Yup. Abortions can never be banned. Just access to free, safe abortions.

Applesandroses · 25/06/2022 17:48

1 in 2 fathers who should pay cms don't

I find that more shocking than any abortion statistics

Except stats show an increase in women over 35, and a steep increase following the introduction of the 2 child cap in 2016. So maybe it’s about women who are already at their limit falling pregnant with a 3rd/4th child with no prospect of financial support, given we also have no effective way of making men meet their financial responsibility for children conceived.

And why on Earth should a woman’s sex life be taboo?

Exactly this. There was a troll thread that's just been removed - the person claiming to be 15 weeks pregnant - a lot of judgement on there. Very depressing. (also that anti abortion trolls are active on here)

MultiBird · 25/06/2022 16:55

Yes, on the basis that I don't think any woman wants to have an abortion. Surely best avoided if possible?

Well I did. I couldn't afford a child, was in a physically abusive relationship with someone who eventually raped me and i had no intention of bringing a child into that environment. Damned right I wanted an abortion and I've never regretted it for a moment.

That is definitely shocking. I knew it was bad,but not THAT bad.

Barelyfunctioning3 · 25/06/2022 17:55

A family member of mine has had 4 abortions. She wasn't on any form of contraception as they don't agree with her, neither she or the father did anything to prevent those pregnancies. They already have 2 DC so they know how these things work. No MH conditions or vulnerabilities. Just careless and cavalier.

RampantIvy · 25/06/2022 17:57

Make it more accessible and less shit (the pill is shit!)

Not for everyone @MrsTerryPratchett ett. I had no problems with it, and it helps with DD’s periods hugely.

Abortion should be as easily accessed as any woman wants.

I agree. This is something I feel so strongly about. IMO pro-lifers should be forced to house and bring up all the children that women who would have had an abortion have had.

What are you intending to prove with this?

So? You get a lot of careless and cavalier behaviour in life. Is it any reason to have an unwanted child?

placewherewebelong · 25/06/2022 17:58

I actually can;t believe women are typing some of these things.

FYI to the poster who claimed its cause women "sleep about" - I'm in a friendship group of 5 - four have fiancees or husbands, I'm the only one who is single currently, we are all 30.

Guess who is the only one of us never to have had an abortion.

placewherewebelong · 25/06/2022 17:58

@Barelyfunctioning3 your post is literally making my blood boil.
