How do I shift this bastard cough?

I've been coughing for a week now and it's dreadful. I feel like I'm honestly going to do some serious damage to my ribs and/or pelvic floor!

It's not Covid as I've had 5 negative LFTs but it's worse than I was when I actually had covid. I don't feel too bad otherwise but it gets worse at night or if I'm on public transport. You can imagine the looks I get when I take the bus, even though I'm masking up!

Anyone got any remedies? I've tried cough mixture, Vicks on the soles of my feet etc but nothing works 😫

Steam room in nearest leisure centre? Always really helps me when I have a cough

PinotGroggio · 25/06/2022 10:22

I've found that immediately after a shower I cough less because of the steam but within an hour or so it's back. So I assume the same would apply to a steam room Sad

Oh following with interest - DH is on day 10 of the same thing. His bouts are lessening but they're still as intense. Poor you OP.

If steam helps , put hot water in a bowl, and a towel over your head over the bowl to breathe in the steam ?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 25/06/2022 10:36

Do you have hayfever? Try an antihistamine.

DotBall · 25/06/2022 10:38

White Horehound. 10 drops in half a small glass of water. Tastes weird but works.

LydiaGwilt · 25/06/2022 10:38

Sugar free chewing gum is really effective for suppressing an irritating cough.

HotSauceCommittee · 25/06/2022 10:42

A couple of co-codamol at night. Codiene is a cough suppressant. Or, if you can still get pholcodiene linctus over the counter, that could work.
Also, regular decongestants. Your cough might be from post cold nasal drip, which irritates the airways and leaves you with a cough long after your cold has gone.
Plenty of hot drinks too. Get well soon.

HotSauceCommittee · 25/06/2022 11:02

Oh, for public, pop a strepsil in your mouth.

user1471517095 · 25/06/2022 11:03

Wait it out. Mine lasted 3 weeks. I thought I was going to hack a lung up. I just kept taking sips of water.

I've had the same thing, it's been awful and really violent episodes of coughing waking me up at night. I have had mine for 3 weeks this weekend. My lft's were all negative but have come to the conclusion it maybe was covid but just not showing on the tests if that's possible. Then again I've not been isolating and no-one else in the family has caught it from me although I caught it from my ds who caught it from his gf. I am never ill so this has really floored me and made me feel so rough for so long. Hope you feel better soon.

PinotGroggio · 25/06/2022 12:42

DH was feeling a bit rough a couple weeks ago, but no cough, and tested positive for covid but by the following day was negative. I've tested religiously since then but not even a faint positive line. Am starting to wonder whether he had some new variant - 24 hour covid!

We've all just been through the same and honestly it was probably around 3-4 weeks for me stop coughing

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 25/06/2022 15:07

But have you tried anti-histamines? Cough is a hayfever symptom and hayfever is wild this year.

gamerchick · 25/06/2022 15:11

Night nurse. Suppresses a cough canny. A pharmacist told me that by accident once.

Although the last time I said that on here I got a slew of abusive PMs Grin

Oblomov22 · 25/06/2022 15:15

Dh had his for 3 weeks, I wondered if it was a chest infection, he eventually phoned GP, who immediately sent him to critical illnesses Dept at hospital and he was given antibiotics. Was so much better in 4 days.

Klarkin · 25/06/2022 16:07

I wonder could there be some dust or allergen in your environment?

After a few more days, if no change, I'd recommend to try get a GP appointment.

Benylin do a chesty cough tablet that suppresses it enough that you lose the reflex if you take them for a few days. I swear by them.

Summerwetordry · 25/06/2022 18:33

I've had the same non-Covid bug. It lasted four weeks and even codeine didn't really help. I gave myself two black eyes from coughing so much that I ruptured blood vessels around my eyes. It was far worse than when I had Covid.

Steam helps a bit and sucking on cough sweets stopped the tickle.

I do get hay fever so I've been taking antihistamines lately but I never knew a cough was a symptom!

I've tried this for the past few nights but no luck yet.

Are you sure it's not a chest infection ? Bronchitis ?

I didn't know that! Will make a trip to Boots tomorrow to find out. Atm I've got some Covonia night time syrup but I don't think it's as good as Night Nurse.

I don't think it is. It started with a sore throat for a couple of days, then a bit of a cold and then this cough. I feel well otherwise and assume that if it was a chest infection that wouldn't be the case?
