To those who think it couldn't happen over here.....

Rees Mogg is anti-abortion too. This government is heading towards fascism already, changing any laws that stop them doing what they want.

I wish they spoke a different language in America because maybe then we wouldn't keep importing their shit ideas. Europe don't seem to keep copying America like we do

How is what the government are doing in this country not fascism?

No state control of free enterprise and labour.

No banning of opposition parties.

No vast increase in military spending.

No state control of the media.

No state control of religion.

No fraudulent elections.

No massive increase in police and security apparatus.

The government are corrupt and I don't like the increase in government overreach (which has been occurring since Blair and is getting worse) but that isn't fascism.

You need to wake up this is me putting it politely

It absolutely could happen here, UK politics is bloated with misogyny

Don’t be a wally. He’s entitled to his opinion. I’m absolutely delighted by the news from the US today btw.

Assume you’ll be delighted when contraception is banned? How many layers of bodily autonomy for women are you happy to erode? In the spirit of “light-hearted MN” I’m asking for a friend …

balalake · 25/06/2022 07:33

I don't think it will happen over here. What may change is the time it takes to access health services, not just for abortion but for any aspect of women's health.

Certainly not with a Prime Minister who has had a relationship with a woman who then had an abortion (we don't know if he pressurised her or commented in any way about the pregnancy his sperm created).

You have too high an opinion of Bozo if you think he'd never ban something that he has had need for in the past. I'm pretty sure he's used the NHS before but he's still pretty intent on fucking it over.

I have friends and family who are Catholics and none of them support what has happened in the States.

Please tell me you're having a laugh. I can counter pretty much everything in your list off the top of my head when I've just woken up and am still groggy in bed.

State control of media

Bozo literally this week got an article about him trying to get his then mistress a top job in the foreign office pulled when it had already gone out.

. The government IS the media and vice versa:Bozo refers to The Telegraph as his real bosses.

The Daily Mail and so many publications are basically government mouthpieces

Threatening to privatise channel 4 because they frequently hold the government to account . I've already noticed a change in c4 news since this

Watch BBC question time even once. The host Fiona Bruce is so ridiculously biased towards the Tories. Her husband is a tory donor. What a surprise!

A Tory peer has literally just become the chairman of the supposedly independent broadcasting regulator Ofcom

No fraudulent elections

Well they've just brought the elections regulator, the Electoral Commission, out of independent control to government control. They are also currently reviewing constituency boundaries to their benefit.

Yeah, like I said: wake up

The U.K. has headed in the other direction to the US on this one, and I see no reason to assume that the individuals cited are indicative of anything other than now niche, anachronistic views. Abortion has finally been decriminalised in Northern Ireland (though still hard to obtain in practice), rules around MAP have been relaxed.

What is happening in the US with the trump appointees having unbalanced their Supreme Court is terrible but it's not the U.K., this simple isn't about us. We're not as a nation baying for the right to bear arms, are we?

Despite (or because? ) of having an established church, we're fortunately much less in thrall to religious dogma than the supposedly secular US.

x2boys · 25/06/2022 08:40

Well he's entitled to his view ,but Britain is far more Liberal than the US in many ways ,i really can't see the same thing happening here ,America is such an odd place ,they demand their right to bear arms ,but overturn Roe versus Wade and can't see the irony .

GreenLunchBox · 25/06/2022 09:17

I can't believe that if your life is in danger from the pregnancy you'll be forced to carry it.

If all the women in the US refused to have sex this ruling wouldn't last very long

reversal of Roe. v. Wade is widely considered an ultra-conservative Catholic move (5/6 supporters). They are fringe extremists even within the Catholic church who pick and choose which Catholic church policies they support or oppose. Bet they would never vote to outlaw the death penalty, for instance.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 25/06/2022 09:37

For those suggesting it'll not happen over here (religious bigotry dominating, deciding and legislating against women)..Folks, can I just point your attention to Northern Ireland...

Our current Home Secretary supports the death penalty so I wouldn't be surprised if that was their next bright idea

Which has moved in the other direction at last, following the Irish Republic (also legalisation of gay marriage there in recent years). Religion is losing rather than gaining hold.

Of course, there are horrible examples in some Eastern European countries who've also removed womens rights.

thegcatsmother · 25/06/2022 09:50

Overturning Roe Vs Wade is horrendous, but the pro life view is one held by the Pope, and many Roman Catholics.

I think there is a debate to be had in the UK about abortion law given medical advances in keeping prem babies alive, but I cannot see the right to an abortion being rescinded here, as many politicians are very aware that women do turn out to vote.

Banning legal abortions kills women.

Supporting a ruling that kills women is misogyny.

newnamethanks · 25/06/2022 12:10

I would make a comment but I don't have a man nearby to ask what my opinion is about men legislating against abortion.

Ted27 · 25/06/2022 12:15

@ErrolTheDragon

given that Rees Mogg is an elected MP, there are many people who share his views

newnamethanks · 25/06/2022 12:47

Not necessarily. And not for long if the people of Tiverton would be good enough to pop along to their neighbours and share their opinions. Who knows?

Ted27 · 25/06/2022 13:09

@newnamethanks

we can live in hope

Women will die as a result of this.

There are words far stronger than wally for people like you.

icebearforpresident · 25/06/2022 15:48

I’ve set up a monthly donation to BPAS, my local maternity hospital has been getting ‘pro-life’ (anti-woman) protests since the leak that this was coming a few weeks ago. This won’t end in America, these groups have worldwide reach, they’re coming for us.

Georama · 25/06/2022 16:18

The Catholic church is also opossed to same-sex marriage, but he's married to a man. He's also a member of the society for the protection of unborn children, who are a deeply homophobic organisation that campaigned against same-sex marriage. It's congnative dissonance at its finest.

Trainbear · 25/06/2022 16:43

GreenLunchBox · 24/06/2022 23:27

The Tories are literally about to scrap the Human Right Act. I wish people would when up

There are a great many civilised and first world countries who are not signed up to the European human right act. They are not considered savage countries.

Florenz · 25/06/2022 17:20

Human Rights Act has nothing to do with the repeal of Roe vs Wade. And I would be glad to see the HRA repealed in this country as it has done nothing positive, it's just something criminals hide behind, when they have spent their lives showing no consideration for the rights of their victims.
